    Abstract
This study analyzes Spanish research on Knowledge Organization from 2002 to 2010. The first stage involved extraction of records from national and international databases that were interrogated. After getting the pertinent records, they we re normalized and processed according to the usual bibliometric procedure. The results point to a mature specialty follow ing the path of the past decade. There is a remarkable increase of male vs. female authors per publication, although the gender gap is not big. It is also evident that ther e is a remarkable internationalization in publication and that the content map of the specialty is more varied than in the previous decade.

    Abstract
Knowledge organization (KO) is now facing new challenges due to the changes in society, the new ways of producing knowledge (inter and transdisciplinarity), the demands for organizing the knowledge outside the context of the KOSs and the need for building systems where transverse structures should be stressed and where socio-cultural integration is one of their key elements. On the other hand, the theoretical findings claimed by the postmodern thinking (as inter and transdisciplinarity) suggest that a change in the fundamentals of Knowledge organization (KO) and in the design and construction of KOSs should be undertaken. This work deals with the role of the KO in systems that exceed the function of information retrieval in the strict sense, the need for cultural integration in KOSs, and the contribution that transdisciplinarity and other recent theories can contribute to the foundations of KO and the design and construction of the KOSs.

    Abstract
The analysis of the terminological representation of interdisciplinary domains is a method that helps us identify terminological dynamics and the conceptual model to organize these spaces. This study applies this approach to Gender Studies, to arrive at the behaviour and the problems posed by the domain, and a possible model for its organization.

    Abstract
This research studied the role of knowledge organization in the process of decision making in the field of energy efficiency and rational use of energy (EERUE). Theoretical contributions to knowledge organization and decision making are stressed. We chose to work with a type of methodology known as multiple criteria decision making-Saaty's analytical hierarchies process (AHP). This made it possible to develop a detailed analysis of the decision-making process and arrive at a hierarchical model. The model provided a structure representing the studied field, where an order of priority could be given to the decision-making process. The knowledge derived may be used in other fields of study such as information retrieval and knowledge representation.

    Abstract
The research dynamics of knowledge organization (KO) show a tendency towards the reformulation of previous questions in the new technology-driven and interdisciplinary context of KO. Current research questions in KO are dominated by a noteworthy interest in quality, related not only to the informational contents recorded in knowledge organization systems (KOS) but also to technical and technological considerations. The integration of knowledge would seem to constitute a quality indicator present in most proposals, and it also responds to the need for KOS with frameworks comprehensible for all user sectors, respecting the diversity of users. The flip side of knowledge integration entails the conjugation of technical, formal and technological aspects, well represente by the word interoperability, or the search for a way to simplify and harmonize the great variety of structures and formats that coexist in the Internet. This paper addresses the aforementioned major research concerns expressed in the last decade of KO literature. It is structured into two broad sections: 1) A demand for quality, touching on research questions related to multilingualism, cross-culturalism, social groups, minorities and ethics, as well as the integration of structures, forms and formats and the respective proposals by scholars; and 2) A demand for managing emergent knowledge in KOS, with a discussion of how to represent and organize work-oriented and organizational knowledge domains, where multidimensional knowledge (multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinarity) is addressed together with the responses put forth by various researchers.

    Abstract
Interdisciplinary subject areas such as gender studies present difficulties for their representation and structuring in indexing and information retrieval systems. This study looks into this domain based on four specialized thesauri in gender. The results point to a lack of uniformity in the terminology selected, and a high degree of conceptual dispersion of the models of the domain.

    Abstract
Scientific specialties are influenced by socio-cultural contexts. This influence is not homogeneous but, on the contrary, it varies dependying on the specialty. The context can affect the theoretical and epistemological development of a scientific domain and, as a result, it may condition not only a robust, consistent theoretical framework but also good practice. Knowledge organization (KO) should be concerned with this situation and should consider these parameters for knowledge organization systems (KOS) design in order to create structures closer to reality. By doing this, there are possibilities to detect and avoid representing possible epistemological and theoretical biases in KOSs. As an example of what has been said, this paper take two domains: psychiatry and information science with emphasis in KO.

    Abstract
This study analyzes the models of representation and organization of knowledge surrounding Gender. In addition to assessing their visibility, we analyze the thematic models and the conceptual treatment of Gender in search engine directories with wide coverage in different parts of the world. Eight seach engines were selected, two of them international (Yahoo, Google), one an international affiliate (Yahoo España), and five local ones (three from the Mercosur, and one apiece from Africa and Asia). The research was done an two levels: a) knowledge representation through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the terms of Gender; b) knowledge organization, through the structural and semantic-conceptual analysis of the search engines. The results express a clear terminological and structural supremacy of the international search engines, as well a lack of correspondence overall among the terminologies, relative visibility, and diffusion of matters of Gender, leading to considerable difficulties in achieving consistent access to specific information.

    Abstract
Knowledge changes and evolves with time. This makes it necessary for classifications and other information retrieval tools to be revised periodically to ensure that they represent an updated organization of knowledge. This problem worsens in the case of some scientific disciplines because of their degree of internal specialization and dynamism. This is the case with Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology (category taken from the Journal Citation Reports (JCR)). A way of solving this problem can be by means of an automatic classification, but also by applying multivariate techniques of analysis and neural networks. This work deals with the two last procedures. The source chosen for doing this work is the Science Citation Index (SCI-CD) database, chosen because it contains the best publications on the disciplines studied - a guarantee for them to be represented properly. We are especially concerned with the quality of the representation. All of the journals dealing with Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology in the database (152) have been selected. Each document has been represented according to the references that it includes. From this point three co-citation matrices were generated: authors, journals and articles from each document. This technique implies the use of complementary methods for document representation by the way of the three matrices processed by multivariate techniques (MDS, PCA, CA). The result is that it can be determined which classes form the intellectual structure of the disciplines studied. This would be of great help for automatic updating of bibliographic classifications and other information retrieval tools. At the same time, these techniques can work as robots for document classification, authors and publications, and allows for the generation of knowledge maps that can be used as interfaces for accessing the documents from their location in a database..
