    Abstract
    In the future, frontier research in many fields will increasingly require the collaboration of globally distributed groups of researchers needing access to distributed computing, data resources and support for remote access to expensive, multi-national specialized facilities such as telescopes and accelerators or specialist data archives. There is also a general belief that an important road to innovation will be provided by multi-disciplinary and collaborative research - from bio-informatics and earth systems science to social science and archaeology. There will also be an explosion in the amount of research data collected in the next decade - 100's of Terabytes will be common in many fields. These future research requirements constitute the 'eResearch' agenda. Powerful software services will be widely deployed on top of the academic research networks to form the necessary 'Cyberinfrastructure' to provide a collaborative research environment for the global academic community. The difficulties in combining data and information from distributed sources, the multi-disciplinary nature of research and collaboration, and the need to move to present researchers with tooling that enable them to express what they want to do rather than how to do it highlight the need for an ecosystem of Semantic Computing technologies. Such technologies will further facilitate information sharing and discovery, will enable reasoning over information, and will allow us to start thinking about knowledge and how it can be handled by computers. This talk will review the elements of this vision and explain the need for semantic-oriented computing by exploring eResearch projects that have successfully applied relevant technologies. It will also suggest that a software + service model with scientific services delivered from the cloud will become an increasingly accepted model for research.

Jahrhundert« sollen eine »globale Agenda« darstellen. Das Buch ist aus Vorlesungen, Lektionen und vor allem Diskussionen mit Studenten, Journalisten und Kollegen hervorgegangen. Es zeigt erneut, wie dringlich Hararis Anliegen ist. Die Geschichte gewährt eben keinen Rabatt. Zunächst geht er einen Schritt rückwärts, von seiner düster beschriebenen Zukunft zurück in die Gegenwart, von den sterilen Labors und Big-Data-Algorithmen zum »Hier und Jetzt« und der unmittelbaren Zukunft menschlicher Gemeinschaften. Noch einmal, etwas präziser, aber auch optimistischer, benennt er die technologischen, politischen und die globalen Herausforderungen. Dass er das Buch im Kapitel »Meditation« mit persönlichen Bekenntnissen beendet, erstaunt. »Ein paar Jahre oder sogar Dekaden« gesteht er den Menschen am Schluss noch zu, sich selbst zu erforschen, ihrem Leben Sinn und Identität zu geben - oder, sagen wir es einfacher, Menschen zu bleiben."

Konsequent soll dabei alles was stört (Barrieren, Java-Skript, Cookies, Systemanforderungen, Timeouts) über Bord geworfen werden und durch banale Dinge ersetzt werden, die Nutzerinnen und Nutzer oft einfordern, aber selten bekommen (schnelle Antwortzeiten, einfache Oberfläche, Hilfestellung bei Fehlern in der Suche, Rechtschreibkorrektur, Ranking nach auswählbaren Kriterien, Tools zur Verfeinerung der Suche, Zusatzinformationen wie Cover, Inhaltsverzeichnis, Rezensionen und schließlich Personalisierung und Alert-Dienste). Schön auch in diesem Zusammenhang die Randbemerkung zu RSS-Feeds: "Bibliothekare wissen meist nicht, was das Logo bedeutet und lassen sich dann durch die Nutzer belehren." April 2007 in der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (Frankfurt am Main) stattfand, befassten sich die einzelnen Referentinnen nicht nur mit der Bewahrung des Kulturgutes, sondern u.a. auch mit der "Aufzeichnung der Welten". Wie man diese "Weltaufzeichnung" in Anbetracht der Fülle und stetigen Zunahme an Informationen zukünftig (noch) besser bewältigen kann, thematisierte Kim H. Veltman in seinem Vortrag. Er präsentierte dazu vier äußerst denkwürdige Ansätze: - Schaffung einerzentralen europäischen Instanz, welche die Gedächtnisinstitutionen über die neusten technologischen Entwicklungen informiert - Errichtung eines digitalen Referenzraums und einer virtuellen Agora innerhalb der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek - Gründung eines Instituts zur Wissensorganisation - Erforschen der Anforderungen für eine "Universal Digital Library"."
