    Abstract
    In einer szientometrischen bzw. informetrischen Studie werden internationale wie deutschsprachige Zeitschriften der Informations-/Bibliothekswissenschaft und -praxis mittels Zitationsanalyse und Expertenbefragung analysiert. Die zitatenanalytischen Kennwerte umfassen den Impact Factor, die Halbwertszeit, die Zitierfreudigkeit, die relative Häufigkeit von Zeitschriftenselbstreferenzen sowie Soziogramme der einflussreichen Periodika. Der Fragebogen erhebt die Lesehäufigkeit, die Einsetzbarkeit der gelesenen Journale im Tätigkeitsbereich, die Publikationstätigkeit und die Publikationspräferenz sowohl für alle Respondenten als auch für abgrenzbare Gruppen (Praktiker vs. Wissenschaftler, Bibliothekare vs. Dokumentare vs. Informationswissenschaftler, öffentlicher Dienst vs. Informationswirtschaft vs. andere Wirtschaftsunternehmen).

    Abstract
    The rapid proliferation of computer networks offers unique possibilities for researchers to exchange information, and equally unique challenges for the people who have to realise these possibilities. I will summarise (some will say: caricaturise) the process of obtaining information as a four-step process: (a) knowing what you want, (b) finding the location of the wanted information, (c) obtaining the information itself, and (d) processing the information to a form useful for further purposes, including quality assessment. The classical field of information retrieval has almost exclusively concentrated on (b), while Internet has mainly facilitated (c). I will argue that a new generation of computer tools will facilitate all steps save (a), and perhaps even (a). Key features of these tools are: they possess built-in awareness of scientific content, and they will fuzzify the boundaries between the steps. Key concepts are ontologies (the computer-age successors of thesauri and classification systems), domain-informed natural-language processing, virtual reality, and integration techniques. At the same time, it must be noted that the availability of the needed resources does not keep pace with the other developments. This in part is a problem of funding. I will argue that the development of resources should be considered in the same vein as other infrastructural measures, like the purchase of expensive equipment in the natural sciences

    Abstract
    Van Dijck builds up an example of actual XFML by showing how to organize tourist information about what restaurants in what cities feature which kind of music: <facet id="city">City</facet> and <topic id="ny" facetid="city"><name>New York</name></topic> combine to mean that New York is the name of a city internally represented as "ny". It is written in the usual clear and practical style of articles on xml.com. Highly recommended as an introduction for anyone interested in XFML.

    Abstract
    Durch Vernetzung unterschiedlicher Informationsbestände und ihre Verfügbarkeit über Länder- und Gruppengrenzen hinweg werden vorrangig Fragen aufgeworfen, welche die Integration, die Interpretation und die Repräsentation von Wissen betreffen. Entsprechend scheinen hierdurch für die Wissensorganisation altbekannte Problematiken in neuem Licht und mit veränderter Tragweite auf. Für die 6. Tagung der Deutschen Sektion der Internationalen Gesellschaft für Wissensorganisation (ISKO), die vom 23.-25. September 1999 an der Fachhochschule Hamburg stattfand, wurde deswegen das Leitthema 'Globalisierung und Wissensorganisation' gewählt. In unterschiedlicher Weise hatten die Referenten der Tagung die veränderten Fragestellungen für die Wissensorganisation und die Implikationen dessen, was heute oft mit dem Terminus `Globalisierung' verbunden wird, herausgearbeitet. 'Globalisierung' kann als Ausdruck der Ängste und Erwartungen unserer Zeit in Hinblick auf die Zukunft gesehen werden, welche an der Schwelle zur Jahrtausendwende (vermeintlich) besonders gravierend erscheinen. Der wechselseitige Bezug zwischen 'Wissensorganisation' und 'Globalisierung' thematisiert aber nicht nur neue, umfassendere Fragen für die Wissensorganisation sondern versucht auch, in den unklaren Perspektiven einer globalisierten Wissenslandschaft einige Orientierungspunkte zu geben. Aktuelle Anwendungsgebiete ergeben sich grundsätzlich dort, wo verteilte Ressourcen weltweit bereitgestellt oder genutzt werden: So etwa beim Wissensmanagement in multi-nationalen Unternehmen, beim Entwurf von Ontologien, die für unterschiedliche fachliche oder kulturelle Konzeptualisierungen offen sind, bei der sachlichen Ordnung in thematischen Clearingstellen und der Erstellung von Meta-Daten für Internet-Quellen, bei der Recherche von multimedialer Information und bei vielem anderen.

Die deutschsprachige Sektion der ISKO hat ihren Sitz in Bonn; die Gesellschaft ist jedoch hierzulande nicht ausreichend bekannt und hat bislang nurwenige Mitglieder aus Österreich. Neben der nunmehr bereits seit über dreissig Jahren erscheinenden Fachzeitschrift Knowledge Organization (bis 1993 International Classification) publiziert die ISKO mehrere Buchserien, die früher im Frankfurter Indeks-Verlag erschienen und heute - wie auch die Zeitschrift - in Würzburg bei Ergon verlegt werden. Unter diesen nehmen die Tagungsbände der internationalen ISKO-Konferenzen, die seit 1990 alle zwei Jahre (an wechselnden Orten) abgehalten werden, eine bedeutende Stellung ein. Nun liegen die Proceedings der im Juli des vergangenen Jahres in London veranstalteten achten Konferenz vor, editiert in einheitlichem Layout, an dem mit Ausnahme der relativ kleinen Schrift, einem mitunter miss glückten Randausgleich bei den Titelüberschriften, unschönen (da fehlenden) Abständen bei den Überschriften von Subkapiteln sowie den üblichen vermeidbaren Tippfehlern (z.B. "trieval" anstelle von "retrieval" im Inhaltsverzeichnis, p. 9) wenig auszusetzen ist. Der trotz des kleinen Fonts stattlich wirkende Band versammelt immerhin 55 Vorträge, die, offenbar der Organisation der Tagung entsprechend, in 17 Abschnitte gegliedert sind. Die letzteren sind allerdings nur aus dem Inhaltsverzeichnis ersichtlich und entbehren jeden Kommentars, der sie auch inhaltlich hätte näher charakterisieren können. Die Herkunft der Autoren der Vorträge - darunter einige grosse und bekannte Namen - spiegelt die Internationalität der Vereinigung wider. Der deutsche Sprachraum ist allerdings nur durch einen einzigen Beitrag vertreten (H. Peter Ohly vom IZ Sozialwissenschaften, Bonn, über die Erschliessung einer Datenbank für Web-Ressourcen); bibliothekarische Autoren aus dem Raum "D-A-CH" sucht man vergebens. Die meisten Vorträge sind relativ kurz und bündig gehalten; die durchschnittliche Länge beträgt etwa vier bis sechs Seiten.
    Das Rahmenthema der Tagung kam aufgrund des vor und nach der ISKO-Konferenz abgehaltenen "UN World Summit an an Information Society" zustande. Im Titel des Buches ist die "globale Wissensgesellschaft" freilich eher irreführend, da keiner der darin abgedruckten Beiträge zentral davon handelt. Der eine der beiden Vorträge, die den Begriff selbst im Titel anführen, beschäftigt sich mit der Konstruktion einer Taxonomie für "cultural literacy" (O'Keefe), der andere mit sogenannten "naiven Klassifikationssystemen" (Beghtol), d.h. solchen, die im Gegensatz zu "professionellen" Systemen von Personen ohne spezifisches Interesse an klassifikatorischen Fragen entwickelt wurden. Beiträge mit "multi-kulti"-Charakter behandeln etwa Fragen wie - kulturübergreifende Arbeit, etwa beim EU-Filmarchiv-Projekt Collate (Albrechtsen et al.) oder einem Projekt zur Maori-Kultur (Liew); - Mehrsprachigkeit bzw. Übersetzung, z.B. der koreanischen Dezimalklassifikation (Kwasnik & Chun), eines auf der Sears ListofSubject Headings basierenden slowenischen Schlagwortvokabulars (Zalokar), einer spanisch-englischen Schlagwortliste für Gesundheitsfragen (Rosemblat et al.); - universelle Klassifikationssysteme wie die Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation (Joan Mitchell über die DDC 22, sowie zwei weitere Beiträge) und die Internationale Dezimalklassifikation (la McIlwaine über Geographika, Nancy Williamson über Alternativ- und Komplementärmedizin in der UDC). Unter den 55 Beiträgen finden sich folgende - aus der Sicht des Rezensenten - besonders interessante thematische "Cluster": - OPAC-orientierte Beiträge, etwa über die Anforderungen bei derAutomatisierung analytisch-synthetischer Klassifikationssysteme (Slavic & Cordeiro) sowie Beiträge zu Benutzerforschung und -verhalten (Lee & Clyde; Miller); - Erschliessung und Retrieval von visuellen bzw. multimedialen Ressourcen, insbesondere mit Ausrichtung auf Thesauri (Hudin; Garcia Jimenez & De Valle Gastaminza; Rafferty & Hidderley); - Thesaurus-Standards (Dextre Clark et al.), Thesauri und Endbenutzer (Shiri & Revie); - Automatisches Klassifizieren (Vizine-Goetz & Beall mit Bezug auf die DDC; Na et al. über methodische Ansätze bei der Klassifizierung von Produktbesprechungen nach positiven bzw. negativen Gefühlsäusserungen); - Beiträge über (hierzulande) weniger bekannte Systeme wie Facettenklassifikation einschliesslich der Bliss-Klassifikation sowie der Umsetzung der Ideen von Ranganathan durch E.J. Coates (vier Vorträge), die Sachs-Klassifikation (Sachs & Smiraglia) sowie M. S. van der Walts Schema zur Klassifizierung elektronischer Dokumente in Klein- und Mittelbetrieben. Auch die übrigen Beiträge sind mehrheitlich interessant geschrieben und zeugen vom fachlichen Qualitätsstandard der ISKO-Konferenzen. Der Band kann daher bibliothekarischen bzw. informationswissenschaftlichen Ausbildungseinrichtungen sowie Bibliotheken mit Sammelinteresse für Literatur zu Klassifikationsfragen ausdrücklich empfohlen werden. Ausserdem darf der nächsten (= neunten) internationalen ISKO-Konferenz, die 2006 in Wien abgehalten werden soll, mit Interesse entgegengesehen werden.

    Abstract
    DAS STANDARDWERK in der Philosophie des Geistes seit 10 Jahren - jetzt in 5. Auflage mit einer um mehr als 60 Seiten erweiterten Bibliographie, die Publikationen zur Philosophie des Geistes und angrenzender Disziplinen von 1970-2004 erfaßt (über 2700 Titel). Kann man sich vorstellen, dass so etwas wie bewusstes Erleben auf der Grundlage physikalischer Vorgänge entstehen konnte? Sind subjektives Empfinden und das Entstehen einer Innenperspektive überhaupt als Bestandteil der natürlichen Ordnung der Dinge denkbar - oder werden wir an dieser Stelle mit einem letztlich unauflöslichen Mysterium konfrontiert, mit einem weissen Fleck auf der Landkarte des wissenschaftlichen Weltbildes, der vielleicht aus prinzipiellen Gründen immer ein weisser Fleck bleiben muss? Obwohl als Studienwerkzeug konzipiert, kann der Band auch das Interesse weiterer Kreise gewinnen. M. Lenzen, Frankfurter Rundschau. In den letzten Jahren hat es keine Veröffentlichung gegeben, die so kenntnisreich und informativ in die Gegenwartsdiskussion um das Bewusstsein einführte. H. Breuer, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
