    Abstract
    Chapter 7 of 'University libraries and scholarly communication', a study prepared for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The transition from a print technology to an electronic technology has led to fundamental changes in how the nature of information is perceived. The characteristics of print have had profoundly important implications for the storage and dissemination of information, for the role publishers play in the process of scholarly communication, and for the acquisitions practices of research libraries.
