    Abstract
    Document image processing (DIP) was introduced as part of the search for the paperless office. It seemed to offer many advantages but failed to be justified on cost grounds and entailed a number of far reaching sociological implications. It involved radical change in work practices and became allied to the business reengineering movement. Discusses lessons learnt from the failure of DIP applications and offers suggestions for situations in which they can be best applied
