    "Magda Heiner-Freiling, die Leiterin der Abteilung Sacherschließung am Frankfurter Standort der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek, ist am 22. Juli 2007 im Alter von 57 Jahren während ihres Urlaubs tödlich verunglückt. Sie wird in unserer Erinnerung weiterleben als Kollegin, deren enormes Fachwissen wir ebenso schätzten wie ihre warmherzige Sorge um das Wohlergehen ihrer Kollegen und Mitarbeiter. Sie war eine exzellente Expertin und engagierte Bibliothekarin und sie war dabei vor allem auch eine herzliche, immer hilfsbereite, sich für andere notfalls auch kämpferisch einsetzende, mitfühlende Kollegin und Vorgesetzte. Magda Heiner-Freiling verband, integrierte, schaffte Nähe und Vertrautheit nicht nur in ihrer unmittelbaren Umgebung, sondern mühelos auch über geografische Entfernungen hinweg. Ihren Kampfgeist, ihre Loyalität, ihre soziale Kompetenz, ihre Begeisterungsfähigkeit und ihre erfrischende Direktheit habe ich vor allem in den vergangenen zwei Jahren geschätzt, in denen sie mir als Abteilungsleiterin gegenübersaß. Nach ihrem 1. Staatsexamen in den Fächern Deutsch, Englisch und Erziehungswissenschaften sowie weiteren Studien in den Fächern Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft, wissenschaftliche Politik und europäische Ethnologie an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz und an der Philipps-Universität in Marburg begann 1974 ihr bibliothekarischer Werdegang als Bibliotheksreferendarin bei der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt am Main. 1976 legte sie die bibliothekarische Staatsprüfung für den höheren Dienst an wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken an der Bibliotheksschule Frankfurt am Main ab. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit als Fachreferentin hat Magda Heiner-Freiling von der ersten Stunde an bei der RSWK-Entwicklung mitgearbeitet. Sie betreute die Belange der öffentlichen Bibliotheken mit großem Engagement und führte Anfang der neunziger Jahre die »Expertengruppe Erschließung für Kinder- und Jugendliteratur, Belletristik, Schul- und Berufsschulbücher«; auch hat sie sich viele Jahre in die Arbeit der Expertengruppe RSWK/SWD eingebracht. Ihrem ausgeprägten Interesse für das Andere, für andere Sprachen, andere Kulturen, entsprach ihr besonderes Interesse für die internationale Klassifikationspraxis und -theorie und den multilingualen Ansatz von Normvokabularien. Sie war von 1994 bis 2000 Mitglied des IFLA-Gremiums »Section on Classification and Indexing / Standing Committee« und hat diese Arbeit immer mit großer Begeisterung gemacht. Darüber hinaus hat sie in den IFLA Working Groups »Working Group of Anonymous Classics«, »Working Group on Guidelines for Multilingual Thesauri« und »Working Group >Survey on Subject Heading Languages in National Bibliographies<« aktiv mitgearbeitet.

    Abstract
    The European Commission's goal for Europeana is to make European information resources easier to use in an online environment. It will build on Europe's rich heritage, combining multicultural and multilingual environments with technological advances and new business models. The Europeana prototype is the result of a 2-year project that began in July 2007. Europeana.eu went live on 20 November 2008, launched by Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media. Europeana.eu is about ideas and inspiration. It links the user to 2 million digital items: images, text, sounds and videos. Europeana is a Thematic Network funded by the European Commission under the eContentplus programme, as part of the i2010 policy. Originally known as the European digital library network - EDLnet - it is a partnership of 100 representatives of heritage and knowledge organisations and IT experts from throughout Europe. They contribute to the work packages that are solving the technical and usability issues. The project is run by a core team based in the national library of the Netherlands, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. It builds on the project management and technical expertise developed by The European Library, which is a service of the Conference of European National Librarians. Content is added via so called aggregators, national or domain specific portals aggegrating digital content and channelling it to Europeana. Most of these portals are being developed in the framework of EU funded projects, e.g. European Film Gateway, Athena and EuropeanaLocal. Overseeing the project is the EDL Foundation, which includes key European cultural heritage associations from the four domains. The Foundation's statutes commit members to: * providing access to Europe's cultural and scientific heritage through a cross-domain portal; * co-operating in the delivery and sustainability of the joint portal; * stimulating initiatives to bring together existing digital content; * supporting digitisation of Europe's cultural and scientific heritage. Europeana.eu is a prototype. Europeana Version 1.0 is being developed and will be launched in 2010 with links to over 6 million digital objects.

    Abstract
    Elektronische Bibliothekskataloge und Bibliografien haben ihr Monopol bei der Suche nach Büchern, Aufsätzen, musikalischen Werken u. a. verloren. Globale Suchmaschinen sind starke Konkurrenten, und Bibliotheken müssen heute so planen, dass ihre Dienstleistungen auch morgen noch interessant sind. Die Deutsche Bibliothek (DDB) wird ihre traditionelle Katalogrecherche zu einem globalen, netzbasierten Informationssystem erweitern, das die Vorteile der neutralen, qualitätsbasierten Katalogsuche mit den Vorteilen moderner Suchmaschinen zu verbinden sucht. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Verbesserung der inhaltlichen Suchmöglichkeiten im Informationssystem Der Deutschen Bibliothek. Weitere Entwicklungsstränge sollen nur kurz im Ausblick angerissen werden.

    Abstract
    zum einen an das VLB, zum anderen an jeden Bezieher dieses neuen Dienstes »Neuerscheinungen«, der ab dem Jahrgang 2003 die Reihe N ersetzt. Die Bezieher werden wesentlich umfassender als über den bisherigen CIP-Dienst über Neuerscheinungen informiert - Vergleiche gehen von der doppelten Menge aus. Die Information kommt außerdem sofort, das heißt nahezu zeitgleich mit der ersten Verlautbarung des Verlages. Den Vorteilen »größere Vollständigkeit« und »Zeitgleichheit« wird der Nachteil entgegenstehen, dass die Neuerscheinungs-Titelmeldungen Der Deutschen Bibliothek keine bibliothekarische Bearbeitung mehr erfahren haben, denn die Arbeitskraft, die an dieser Stelle im bisherigen CIP-Geschäftsgang eingespart wird, wird voll in den Autopsie-Geschäftsgang gegeben, um auch hier für Beschleunigung zu sorgen. Sobald ein Werk erschienen ist, soll es nämlich entsprechend schneller als bisher formal und inhaltlich erschlossen werden. Die Autopsie-Daten werden wiederum an das VLB einerseits und die Bezieher der entsprechenden nationalbibliografischen Dienste andererseits ausgeliefert. Für alle bisherigen Nachnutzer der Daten der Reihe A bedeutet das weniger Eigenleistung in der Katalogisierung, für das VLB bedeutet es einen höheren Qualitätsstandard. Die Kooperation soll allen zugute kommen: Die Buchhändler-Vereinigung und Die Deutsche Bibliothek versprechen sich von der stärkeren Zusammenarbeit zufriedenere Partner in den Verlagen, in den Buchhandlungen und in den Bibliotheken sowie darüber hinaus zufriedenere Nutzer und Kunden der Buchhandlungen und Bibliotheken.
