    Abstract
Although several attempts have been made to devise simplified shelf arrangements for children, little consideration has been given to developing a simplified automated library catalogue. At Denver Public Library in the USA a catalogue has been devised enabling users to search via graphical symbols. Results of research into children's use of library catalogues was used as a basis for creating the system. Librarians must be prepared to re-examine how far existing systems meet the needs of their users

    Abstract
Despite development of the WWW searchers still experience difficulties following links between sites and cannot be sure that a site contains the required information. 3 software programs developed to guide users through the maze of hyperlinks are: Dynamic diagrams, the Hyperbolic tree, and the Brain. in contrast to the other programs which operate on webservers and display hyperlinks in diagrammatic form the Brain is installed on individual PCs and can be customised to meet users' requirements

    Abstract
A study of new information systems and databases shows that insufficient help is provided to enable users to exploit these resources adequately. Despite surveys which show that users rarely employ Boolean logic appropriately in formulating search strategies database producers continue to use it as an indexing tool. Moreover, although much effort has been devoted to developing navigation techniques to search databases, problems still arise with insufficient entry points and links between systems. Resources are currently being channelled into the development of virtual reality systems to help users
