    Abstract
Draws on parallels between outsourcing in business and in libraries to examine the difficulties and implications of outsourcing the catalogue department. Examines why cataloguing, in particular, has received outsourcing attention. 2 major reasons emerge: cataloguing is a non core activity, and catalogue departments are troublesome

    Abstract
Article appearing as part of an issue devoted to the theme, Serials Cataloguing: Modern Perspectives and International Developments. Pt.2. In 1988, a revision of AACR2 and a revised edition of the ISBD for serials were published. Discusses and compares the origins of theses 2 standards and their relationship. Describes the inconsistencies between the 2 texts and evaluates their compatibility. Concludes that there is a high degree of compatability on major points but that relatively little progress has been made since the original editions in reducing the substantial number of minor differences

    Abstract
Reviews the consequences of the traditional division of library staff into Technical Services and Reader Services and if decreased interest in cataloguing by library managers. Notes ways in which non cataloguers have had limited involvement in cataloguing. Describes different forms of a holistic approach to library practice and suggests advantages of a holistic work plan. Considers problems of a holistic work plan, advances some solutions and identifies implications for education in cataloguing in library schools

    Abstract
Libraries, their collections, and bibliographic control are essential components of the provision of access to recorded knowledge. Cataloging is a primary method of bibliographic control. Full or traditional cataloging is very expensive, but relying on keyword searching is inadequate. Alternatives for a solution to cataloging needs for electronic resources including the use of metadata and the Dublin Core are examined. Many questions exist regarding the long-term future of today's electronic documents. Recommendations are made for preserving recorded knowledge and information in the electronic resources for future generations

    Abstract
Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

    Abstract
Defends the role of quality cataloguing. It is only with adequate records that users will be able to find the information they require. It is a prerequisite for efficient machine retrieval and integrated services. Quality MARC records and the intellectual structure of cataloguing are essential is standards of service are to be maintained

    Abstract
Proposes a new model for bibliographic access, the virtual catalogue, to serve the virtual library. Suggests the use of current software and networks to build links between bibliographic databases of all kinds, including full text, to enable the user to search a specified subset of databases. Suggests that local data be limited to holdings information linked to, but separate from, bibliographic databases both local and remote

    Abstract
A survey in spring 94 indicates that most prominent book vendor provide: cataloguing records, authority control and shelf ready book. Considers the advantages and disadvantages of using book vendor cataloguing. Currently most libraries use book vendor supplied cataloguing to process approval books. Explains the process. Procedures worked out by the fast cataloguing project, PromptCat run by OCLC, Yankee Books and Michigan State Libraries may simplify work flow further

    Abstract
Changes in cataloguing practices and philosophies, new technologies and vendor services, and enhanced efficiency and productivity produce new assignements for copy cataloguers in academic libraries. Paraprofessionals, as a result, perform cataloguing tasks previously done by librarians. They should have opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills, and benefit from challenging work assignments
