- Die Zukunft findet im Netz statt: da werden uns Software-Roboter helfen, uns in der Datenflut des Cyberspace zu orientieren. Sie werden uns im Laufe der Zeit gut kennenlernen und uns ohne unser direktes Zutun nützlich sein. In der Medizin wird das Wissen von Experten auch über große Entfernungen hinweg erschließbar, und sogar im Automobil hält das Internet schon Hof. Das 'Netz der Netze' wird zum Hort immer neuer Dienstleistungen. Aber wird Homo connectus - der Mensch mit Anschluß - all diese Wunderdinge auch kaufen wollen?

Das vorliegende Werk gliedert sich in zwei Teile. Der erste Abschnitt ist mit »National Libraries« überschrieben, befasst sich jedoch nur mit der Library of Congress und der National Library of Canada. Ihm folgen Artikel über »Libraries around the world«. Dabei fälltjedoch auf, dass diese Studien zwar Bibliotheken in Großbritannien, Australien, Mittel- und Südamerika und selbst Afrika (Botswana) behandeln, nicht jedoch aus Kontinentaleuropa, trotz entsprechender Aktivitäten etwa in den Niederlanden, in Frankreich oder den deutschsprachigen Ländern. Nur DOBIS/LIBIS wird erwähnt, aber nur, weil es für kurze Zeit die kanadische Entwicklung beeinflusst hat. Im zweiten Teil kommen Katalogisierungsfachleute aus vier Spezial- und neun akademischen Bibliotheken - ausschließlich aus Nordamerika und Großbritannien - zu Wort. So enthält das Werk in 22 Beispielen Berichte über individuelle und regionale Lösungen. Dabei steht die Frage im Vordergrund, zu welchen Änderungen in der Katalogisierungs- und Sacherschließungspraxis die neuen elektronischen Techniken geführt haben. So streben z.B. die englischen Hochschulbibliotheken ein koordiniertes System an. Mit dem Übergang der British Library zu MARC 21 wird das Katalogsystem in Großbritannien nachhaltig beeinflusst - um nur zwei nahe liegende Beispiele zu nennen. Insgesamt werden drei Aspekte behandelt, die Automatisierungstechnik; die dabei einzusetzende Kooperation und das Outsourcing - nicht nur durch Übernahme von Daten anderer Bibliotheken oder durch Verbundsysteme, vor allem der Library of Congress, sondern auch durch Buchhandelsfirmen wie Blackwell North America Authority Control Service. In der Frage der Sacherschließung befassen sich die Beiträge mit den im amerikanischen Bereich üblichen Klassifikationssystemen, vor allem der Colon Classification, Dewey in seinen beiden Formen oder der Library of Congress Classification. Für die deutsche Diskussion sind diese Aspekte vor allem wegen des Übergangs der Deutschen Bibliothek in ihrer Nationalbibliografie zur DDC von großem Interesse (vgl. Magda Heiner-Freiling: Die DDC in der Deutschen Nationalbibliografie. In Dialog mit Bibliotheken. 15. 2003, Nr. 3, S. 8-13). Doch stellen auch die unterschiedlichen Überlegungen zur alphabetischen Katalogisierung, verbunden mit den da zugehörigen Datenbanken, einen interessanten Beitrag zur augenblicklichen Diskussion in Deutschland dar, da auch hier seit einigen Jahren die Katalogisierung nach RAK und ihre Ablösung eine lebhafte Diskussion ausgelöst hat, wie unter anderem der zusammenfassende Beitrag von Elisabeth Niggemann in: Dialog mit Bibliotheken (15. 2003, Nr. 2, S. 4-8) zeigt. Auch die angloamerikanischen und die mit ihnen zum Beispiel in Mexiko, Südamerika oder Australien verbundenen Bibliotheken - das zeigt das Buch deutlich - diskutieren die Frage der alphabetischen Katalogisierung kontrovers. So werden z.B. neben den dominanten AACR-Regeln mit ihrer Weiterentwicklung mehr als zehn andere Katalogisierungssysteme und rund 20 Online-Datenbanken behandelt. Damit liefert das Buch für die Diskussion in Deutschland und die anstehenden Entscheidungen in seiner Grundtendenz wie in den unterschiedlichen-auch widersprüchlichen-Aspekten dereinzelnen Beiträge wertvolle Anregungen."

- Abstract
- Bemerkenswert an den Beiträgen des Kolloquiums "Von der Arbeits- zur Wissensgesellschaft" ist, dass sowohl Klaus Komwachs (Cottbus) als auch Friedrich Kambartel (Frankfurt am Main) für eine Rückkehr in die von Karl Marx ausgehende Traditionslinie der politischen Ökonomie plädieren. Kambartel demonstriert exemplarisch das normativ-kritisehe Potenzial begrifflicher Analyse. Er wendet sich energisch gegen den Slogan, "der Gesellschaft gehe die Arbeit aus"; vielmehr entwickelt er einen Begriff der Arbeit, mit dem sich schließen lässt, dass eine Gesellschaft, in der es zugleich ein Heer von Arbeitslosen und einen latenten, arbeitswirksamen Bedarf gibt, "ökonomisch ... falsch eingestellt ist". Daraus ergibt sich ein konkreter, neokeynesianischer Handlungsvorschlag, der auf die Erzeugung eines jür öffentliche Institutionen verfügbaren arbeitswirksam einsetzbaren ... Geldvolumens" hinausläuft. Da ein solcher Vorschlag in klarem Widerspruch zur gegenwärtig dominanten neoklassischen Ökonomik steht, eröffnet Kambartel damit zugleich eine ernsthafte philosophische Debatte über die Grenzen dieser Theorie. Die Beiträge des Kolloquiums "Wirtschaftsethik" befassen sich mit ähnlich aktuellen Fragen. Peter Koslowski (Hannover) zeigt die Genese des Shareholder-Value-Prinzips auf: Von reinen Finanzunternehmen, in denen es seine Berechtigung habe, sei es auf Industrieunternehmen übertragen und ausgeweitet worden, gerate dort mit den übrigen Zielen solcher Unternehmen in Konflikt und lenke zudem die Interessen des Managements in falsche Richtungen, etwa auf spekulative Untemehmungen oder strategische Übernahmen. Dagegen setzt Koslowski eine aristotelische Auffassung vom Wesenszweck einer Firma, nämlich die "Produktion optimaler Güter". Nach der Auffassung von Lee Tavis vom Notre Dame College of Ohio dient ein vereinseitigtes Shareholder-Value-Prinzip Ökonomen, die in einfachen Mittel-Zweck-Beziehungen denken, als bequeme Handhabe, alle sonstigen Belange diesem Ziel unterzuordnen, und ist insofern eine moralisch fragwürdige Reduktion sozialer Komplexität.
Es liegt kein Argument vor, mit dem man die faktische Affinität zwischen ökonomischer Globalisierung und Shareholder-Value-Prinzip normativ begründen könnte. Aus dem Bereich der anwendungsorientierten Ethik sind die Vorträge von Angelika Krebs (Frankfurt am Main) und Dieter Birnbacher (Düsseldorf) herauszuheben, da sie moralische Alltagsintuitionen auf eine harte Probe stellen. Krebs setzt gegen die allgemein vertretenen komparativen Standards ("Mitglieder zukünftiger Generationen sollen es durchschnittlich nicht schlechter haben als wir") absolute Standards, die von uns lediglich verlangen, zukünftigen Personen die materiellen Bedingungen eines guten Lebens zu hinterlassen. Diese Position setzt voraus, dass man einen moralischen Eigenwert von Gleichheit bestreitet. Eine derart anti-egalitaristische Zukunftsethik erlaubt es, "weniger [zu] hinterlassen, als wir selbst erhalten haben, und uns ein schönes Leben [zu] machen". Wer das nicht akzeptieren möchte, muss Argumente zu Gunsten des Egalitarismus verteidigen, die Krebs allesamt für wenig überzeugend hält. Durch ihren im besten Sinne provozierenden Vortrag hat sie eine Diskussion über die ethische Haltbarkeit egalitaristischer Intuitionen eröffnet, der man auch außerhalb des Problemkreises der Zukunftsverantwortung nicht wird ausweichen können. Birnbacher behandelt die brisante Frage nach der moralischen Zulässigkeit der pränatalen Selektion von N kommen auf Grund bestimmter (un)erwünschter Merkmale.
Was Eltern zu einer derartigen Selektion motivieren könnte, muss für ihn nicht begründet werden. Präferenzen oder "Minderschätzungen" seien nicht schon deshalb moralisch unstatthaft, weil sie "konformistisch, unaufgeklärt oder illusionär" seien. Einwände der Art, nur weil ein Merkmal eines Embryos den EItern nicht gefalle, dürfe man ihn nicht töten, würde Birnbacher als Utilitarist zurückweisen, da er Menschen ein starkes Lebensrecht erst nach der Geburt zuerkennt. Die Erfüllung vorhandener Präferenzen ungeachtet ihrer moralischen Qualität sei wichtiger als der Respekt vor potenziellen Personen. Die Tötung von Nicht-Geborenen sei statthaft, da ein ungeborenes Kind noch "ohne Bewusstsein von Leben und Tod [ist] und deshalb den ihm im Zuge der Selektion auferlegten Tod nicht fürchten kann". Diese - von vielen für skandalös erachtete - Position gründet darin, dass der Utilitarismus nur indirekte Argumente gegen das Töten anerkennen kann. Gegen die technisch immer näher rückende Selektionspraxis lässt Birnbacher allein das Kränkungs-Argument gelten, das besagt, dass sich lebende Träger eines Merkmals, das selegiert wird, gekränkt fühlen könnten. Die utilitaristische Ethik erkennt eben keine absoluten normativen Grenzen an, wenn deren Verletzung einen Zugewinn an Präferenzerfüllung oder Interessenbefriedigung ("Glück") verspricht. Als philosophisch weiterführend könnte sich Wolfgang Spohns (Konstanz) beeindruckender Vorstoß ins "All der Gründe" erweisen. Spohns Ansatz scheint es zu erlauben, philosophische Grundprobleme (Schein und Sein, Apriorität, Kohärenz, Wahrheit, Essenzen) auf argumentationstheoretischer Basis zu reformulieren. Spohn weckt große Neugierde auf den von ihm angekündigten "bedächtigen und umsichtigen Nachvollzug" seiner "tour de force". Die Bedeutung des Argumentierens könnte ungeachtet aller Bekenntnisse zum "Diskurs" in Zukunft schwinden. Wolfram Hogrebe (Bonn) sieht gegenwärtig eine zunehmende Überlagerung von Sprache durch immer trivialere Bilderwelten. "Dieses Jahrhundert begann mit Bewusstsein, verausgabte sich an die Sprache und endet im Bild." Diese Visualisierungen seien Teil einer "kollektiven Infantilisierung", für die sich im Alltag und in den Medien reichlich Belege finden. Hogrebe setzt auf die Widerstandspotenziale autonomer Kunst. Auch der Philosophie kommt die Aufgabe zu, der Unterordnung diskursiver Rationalität unter beliebig herstellbare Bilderwelten zu widerstehen. Wie viele Verbündete sie hierbei noch findet, bleibt abzuwarten

- Die letzten beiden Teile des Kongressbandes behandeln die Möglichkeiten der Bibliometrie zum Handling des sich explosionsartig vermehrenden Wissens sowie der Einsatz solcher Technologien als Trenderkennungssystem. Zuletzt behandelt ein Artikel die Evaluation der Helmholtz-Einrichtungen. Am Schluss befindet sich noch ein sechsseitiges Register, das sehr hilfreich und für einen Kongressband keineswegs selbstverständlich ist. Vielleicht sollte noch auf den als Einleitung abgedruckten, überaus lesenswerten Festvortrag von Ernst Pöppel, Professor für medizinische Psychologie aus München, hingewiesen werden, der die verschiedenen Formen des Wissens allgemeinverständlich aus Sicht der Hirnforschung darstellt. Hervorzuheben ist noch, dass die Publikation kostenlos über den Publikationsserver des FZ Jülich bezogen werden kann, eine Tatsache, die sich offensichtlich nicht herumgesprochen hat, da bei einer Suche über den Karlsruher Virtuellen Katalog (Stand: 22. April 2008) dieses »Exemplar« nicht gefunden wurde. Als höchstes der Gefühle bietet der Südwestverbund bei »elektronische Referenz« einen Link auf das Inhaltsverzeichnis. Vielleicht erbarmt sich pro Verbund jemand und nimmt die elektronische Version auf."

Oberhauser): "Die 1989 gegründete Internationale Gesellschaft für Wissensorganisation (ISKO) ist eine der wenigen Vereinigungen, deren Interessensschwerpunkt ganz auf wissenschaftliche und praktische Fragen der inhaltlichen Erschliessung und des sachlichen Informationszugangs ausgerichtet ist. Die deutschsprachige Sektion der ISKO hat ihren Sitz in Bonn; die Gesellschaft ist jedoch hierzulande nicht ausreichend bekannt und hat bislang nurwenige Mitglieder aus Österreich. Neben der nunmehr bereits seit über dreissig Jahren erscheinenden Fachzeitschrift Knowledge Organization (bis 1993 International Classification) publiziert die ISKO mehrere Buchserien, die früher im Frankfurter Indeks-Verlag erschienen und heute - wie auch die Zeitschrift - in Würzburg bei Ergon verlegt werden. Unter diesen nehmen die Tagungsbände der internationalen ISKO-Konferenzen, die seit 1990 alle zwei Jahre (an wechselnden Orten) abgehalten werden, eine bedeutende Stellung ein. Nun liegen die Proceedings der im Juli des vergangenen Jahres in London veranstalteten achten Konferenz vor, editiert in einheitlichem Layout, an dem mit Ausnahme der relativ kleinen Schrift, einem mitunter miss glückten Randausgleich bei den Titelüberschriften, unschönen (da fehlenden) Abständen bei den Überschriften von Subkapiteln sowie den üblichen vermeidbaren Tippfehlern (z.B. "trieval" anstelle von "retrieval" im Inhaltsverzeichnis, p. 9) wenig auszusetzen ist. Der trotz des kleinen Fonts stattlich wirkende Band versammelt immerhin 55 Vorträge, die, offenbar der Organisation der Tagung entsprechend, in 17 Abschnitte gegliedert sind. Die letzteren sind allerdings nur aus dem Inhaltsverzeichnis ersichtlich und entbehren jeden Kommentars, der sie auch inhaltlich hätte näher charakterisieren können. Die Herkunft der Autoren der Vorträge - darunter einige grosse und bekannte Namen - spiegelt die Internationalität der Vereinigung wider. Der deutsche Sprachraum ist allerdings nur durch einen einzigen Beitrag vertreten (H. Peter Ohly vom IZ Sozialwissenschaften, Bonn, über die Erschliessung einer Datenbank für Web-Ressourcen); bibliothekarische Autoren aus dem Raum "D-A-CH" sucht man vergebens. Die meisten Vorträge sind relativ kurz und bündig gehalten; die durchschnittliche Länge beträgt etwa vier bis sechs Seiten.
Das Rahmenthema der Tagung kam aufgrund des vor und nach der ISKO-Konferenz abgehaltenen "UN World Summit an an Information Society" zustande. Im Titel des Buches ist die "globale Wissensgesellschaft" freilich eher irreführend, da keiner der darin abgedruckten Beiträge zentral davon handelt. Der eine der beiden Vorträge, die den Begriff selbst im Titel anführen, beschäftigt sich mit der Konstruktion einer Taxonomie für "cultural literacy" (O'Keefe), der andere mit sogenannten "naiven Klassifikationssystemen" (Beghtol), d.h. solchen, die im Gegensatz zu "professionellen" Systemen von Personen ohne spezifisches Interesse an klassifikatorischen Fragen entwickelt wurden. Beiträge mit "multi-kulti"-Charakter behandeln etwa Fragen wie - kulturübergreifende Arbeit, etwa beim EU-Filmarchiv-Projekt Collate (Albrechtsen et al.) oder einem Projekt zur Maori-Kultur (Liew); - Mehrsprachigkeit bzw. Übersetzung, z.B. der koreanischen Dezimalklassifikation (Kwasnik & Chun), eines auf der Sears ListofSubject Headings basierenden slowenischen Schlagwortvokabulars (Zalokar), einer spanisch-englischen Schlagwortliste für Gesundheitsfragen (Rosemblat et al.); - universelle Klassifikationssysteme wie die Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation (Joan Mitchell über die DDC 22, sowie zwei weitere Beiträge) und die Internationale Dezimalklassifikation (la McIlwaine über Geographika, Nancy Williamson über Alternativ- und Komplementärmedizin in der UDC). Unter den 55 Beiträgen finden sich folgende - aus der Sicht des Rezensenten - besonders interessante thematische "Cluster": - OPAC-orientierte Beiträge, etwa über die Anforderungen bei derAutomatisierung analytisch-synthetischer Klassifikationssysteme (Slavic & Cordeiro) sowie Beiträge zu Benutzerforschung und -verhalten (Lee & Clyde; Miller); - Erschliessung und Retrieval von visuellen bzw. multimedialen Ressourcen, insbesondere mit Ausrichtung auf Thesauri (Hudin; Garcia Jimenez & De Valle Gastaminza; Rafferty & Hidderley); - Thesaurus-Standards (Dextre Clark et al.), Thesauri und Endbenutzer (Shiri & Revie); - Automatisches Klassifizieren (Vizine-Goetz & Beall mit Bezug auf die DDC; Na et al. über methodische Ansätze bei der Klassifizierung von Produktbesprechungen nach positiven bzw. negativen Gefühlsäusserungen); - Beiträge über (hierzulande) weniger bekannte Systeme wie Facettenklassifikation einschliesslich der Bliss-Klassifikation sowie der Umsetzung der Ideen von Ranganathan durch E.J. Coates (vier Vorträge), die Sachs-Klassifikation (Sachs & Smiraglia) sowie M. S. van der Walts Schema zur Klassifizierung elektronischer Dokumente in Klein- und Mittelbetrieben. Auch die übrigen Beiträge sind mehrheitlich interessant geschrieben und zeugen vom fachlichen Qualitätsstandard der ISKO-Konferenzen. Der Band kann daher bibliothekarischen bzw. informationswissenschaftlichen Ausbildungseinrichtungen sowie Bibliotheken mit Sammelinteresse für Literatur zu Klassifikationsfragen ausdrücklich empfohlen werden. Ausserdem darf der nächsten (= neunten) internationalen ISKO-Konferenz, die 2006 in Wien abgehalten werden soll, mit Interesse entgegengesehen werden.

Nach mühevoller Auswahl kommt der Herausgeber Peter Tallack auf 250 Stück; und bei aller unvermeidlichen Willkür ist ihm die Selektion so gut gelungen, wie dies wohl möglich ist. Der Ausbruch des Mt. St. Helens steht dann eben gleichberechtigt neben der Relativitätstheorie. Trotzdem vermittelt das Werk tatsächlich einen Überblick über die Wissenschaftsgeschichte und ermöglicht es, viele Geschehnisse in einen größeren Zusammenhang einzuordnen. Dabei helfen auch die vielen Querverweise am Ende jedes Artikels. Das Buch ist nach einem streng durchgehaltenen Schema aufgebaut. In chronologischer Folge wird jeder Entdeckung bzw. jedem Ereignis genau eine Doppelseite gewidmet: links der Text, rechts eine ganzseitige Abbildung dazu. So ist der Erklärung von Euklids »Elementen« eine Seite aus der 1482 in Venedig erschienenen ersten gedruckten Ausgabe des Werks beigefügt. Die Artikel sind für Laien gedacht und sehr allgemeinverständlich gehalten. Trotzdem sind die wissenschaftlichen Darstellungen meist präzise und zutreffend. Schließlich ist der Herausgeber selbst Naturwissenschaftler und ehemaliger Redakteur des renommierten englischen Wissenschaftsmagazins »Nature«. Die Texte stammen ebenfalls aus der Feder gestandener Wissenschaftsjournalisten. Garniert ist das Ganze noch mit acht zweiseitigen Essays zu ausgesuchten »herausragenden intellektuellen Leistun gen«, geschrieben von Experten wie dem Paläoanthropologen Richard Leakey (»Die ersten Menschen«) und dem Mathematiker Ian Stewart (»Die Infinitesimalrechnung«). »Meilensteine der Wissenschaft« ist wuchtig, aber keinesfalls abschreckend. Durch die Gestaltung mit kurzen Texten und großformatigen Bildern wirkt es sehr gefällig, bietet etwas fürs Auge und verführt sofort zum Stöbern. Allerdings fehlt der Platz, um auch nur etwas tiefer gehende Informationen unterbringen: Die einzelnen Artikel sind kürzer als so mancher Lexikoneintrag. Da helfen auch die ebenfalls relativ kurzen Essays nicht. Und so schön und ansprechend die großformatigen Bilder auch sein mögen - in vielen Fällen sind sie reine Dekoration, die zum Verständnis nichts und zur Darstellung des Themas wenig beiträgt. Wenn der Erforschung der Wahrscheinlichkeiten durch Pascal und Fermat das Gemälde »Der Falschspieler« zugeordnet wird, hilft auch der Hinweis nicht, dass die damaligen Spieler über Wahrscheinlichkeiten kaum Bescheid wussten. Wen solches nicht stört, der hat in »Meilensteine der Wissenschaft« einen wirklichen Prachtband gefunden."

- Abstract
- For several decades Rafael Capurro has been at the forefront of defining the relationship between information and modernity through both phenomenological and ethical formulations. In exploring both of these themes Capurro has re-vivified the transcultural and intercultural expressions of how we bring an understanding of information to bear on scientific knowledge production and intermediation. Capurro has long stressed the need to look deeply into how we contextualize the information problems that scientific society creates for us and to re-incorporate a pragmatic dimension into our response that provides a balance to the cognitive turn in information science. With contributions from 35 scholars from 15 countries, Information Cultures in the Digital Age focuses on the culture and philosophy of information, information ethics, the relationship of information to message, the historic and semiotic understanding of information, the relationship of information to power and the future of information education. This Festschrift seeks to celebrate Rafael Capurro's important contribution to a global dialogue on how information conceptualization, use and technology impact human culture and the ethical questions that arise from this dynamic relationship.
