    Abstract
    Die Kombination von gleichzeitig mehreren oder vielen intellektuell konstruierten Thesauri und maschineller Indexierung der Texte führt zu einer umfassenderen und spezifischeren Beschreibung von Dokumenten als die intellektuelle Klassifizierung oder die Indexierung allein. Durch die Expansion der Suchfrage um Thesauruseinträge wird der recall deutlich erhöht. Zugleich kann die intellektuelle Klassifizierung in überschaubaren Domänen dazu genutzt werden, baumartig in Dokumentenkollektionen zu navigieren oder die Suche erst in Teilbereichen der Klassifikation zu beginnen, um die precision zu erhöhen. Der Einsatz von Thesauruskollektionen wird an den Beispielen dandelon.com, Landtagsinformationssystem Vorarlberg und der Landeshomepage vorarlberg.at dargestellt.

    Abstract
    Es werden die Grundprobleme der Sacherschließung in Online-Katalogen dargestellt. Ein anschließendes Kapitel behandelt das Verhältnis von verbaler und klassifikatorischer Erschließung. Ein wichtiger Teil der Aussagen betrifft das Gebiet der verbalen Sacherschließung und damit das nationale Regelwerk: Es werden Vorschläge für eine Reform der RSWK im Hinblick auf die Erfordernisse der OPAC unterbreitet. Regelwerk und Normdatei (SWD) bilden dabei eine Einheit und werden zusammen betrachtet. Im vergangenen Jahr wurden die Ergebnisse der Expertengruppe mit dem Schwerpunkt Formalerschließung vorgelegt, nun folgen die Aussagen zur Sacherschließung, welche die Expertengruppe - in veränderter personeller Zusammensetzung unter Leitung von Dr. Friedrich Geißelmann, Regensburg - erarbeitet hat. Die bibliothekarische Öffentlichkeit ist aufgefordert, sich dazu bis zum Jahresende zu äußern. Beide Berichte beziehen sich aufeinander und versuchen, den Zusammenhang zwischen Formal- und Sacherschließung herzustellen. Vom gegenwärtigen Stand der Sacherschließung in deutschen Bibliotheken ausgehend - wozu auch durch die Gruppe im Frühjahr 1993 eine Umfrage in wissenschaftlichen und Öffentlichen Bibliotheken gemacht worden ist, werden die Grundprobleme der Sacherschließung in Online-Katalogen dargestellt. Ein anschließendes Kapitel behandelt das Verhältnis von verbaler und klassifikatorischer Erschließung. Ein wichtiger Teil der Aussagen betrifft das Gebiet der verbalen Sacherschließung und damit das nationale Regelwerk: Es werden Vorschläge für ein Reform der RSWK im Hinblick auf die Erfordernisse des OPAC unterbreitet.     Abstract
    Beschäftigt man sich mit Inhaltserschließung, so sind zunächst zwei Dimensionen zu unterscheiden - die Wissensorganisationssysteme selbst (z. B. Normdateien, Thesauri, Schlagwortsprachen, Klassifikationen und Ontologien) und die Metadaten für Dokumente, die mit diesen Wissensorganisationssystemen erschlossen sind. Beides steht in einer Wechselwirkung zueinander: Die Wissensorganisationssysteme sind die Werkzeuge für die Erschließungsarbeit und bilden die Grundlage für die Erstellung konkreter Erschließungsmetadaten. Die praktische Anwendung der Wissensorganisationssysteme in der Erschließung wiederum ist die Basis für deren Pflege und Weiterentwicklung. Zugleich haben Wissensorganisationssysteme auch einen Eigenwert unabhängig von den Erschließungsmetadaten für einzelne Dokumente, indem sie bestimmte Bereiche von Welt- oder Fachwissen modellartig abbilden. Will man nun Aussagen über die Qualität von inhaltlicher Erschließung treffen, so genügt es nicht, den Input - also die Wissensorganisationssysteme und die damit generierten Metadaten - zu betrachten. Man muss auch den Output betrachten, also das, was die Recherchewerkzeuge daraus machen und was folglich bei den Nutzer:innen konkret ankommt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden Überlegungen zur Qualität von Recherchewerkzeugen in diesem Bereich angestellt - gewissermaßen als Fortsetzung und Vertiefung der dazu im Thesenpapier des Expertenteams RDA-Anwendungsprofil für die verbale Inhaltserschließung (ET RAVI) gegebenen Hinweise. Im Zentrum steht die verbale Erschließung nach den Regeln für die Schlagwortkatalogisierung (RSWK), wie sie sich in Bibliothekskatalogen manifestiert - gleich, ob es sich dabei um herkömmliche Kataloge oder um Resource-Discovery-Systeme (RDS) handelt.

    Abstract
    In der vorliegenden Form können die RSWK nicht befriedigen. Die geforderte hochdifferenzierte Erschließung ist in einem OPAC wegen der vielfältigen Abfragemöglichkeiten gar nicht nötig, ja eine einheitliche Indexierung und effiziente Suche is aufgrund der komplexen Regeln sogar erschwert. Aufgaben und Probleme der verbalen Sacherschließung in OPACs werden in dieser Arbeit aufgezeigt und Ansätze zu einer Alternative diskutiert. Der traditionelle Indexkatalog hat als Ergänzung des modernen Information Retrieval nur eine Zukunft, wenn die Möglichkeiten der EDV und der Faktor Mensch bei der Regelwerkentwicklung besser berücksichtigt werden
