    Abstract
    Anlässlich eines Seminars über Web Usability erhielten Studierende des Fachbereichs Bibliothek und Information (HAW Hamburg) Gelegenheit, sich als Usability-Experten zu erproben. Als Ergebnis lagen im Sommer 2001 Usability-Berichte für 22 Bibliothekswebsites vor. Einige der Auftraggeber waren in der Lage, die Empfehlungen der Studierenden anlässlich eines Redesigns ihrer Website unmittelbar umzusetzen. Im Folgenden werden häufige und gravierende Befunde aus den Usability-Berichten zusammengefasst' und jeweils anschließend Empfehlungen angeboten.

    "Am 22. April jährte sich zum 150. Mal der Geburtstag von Henri Marie La Fontaine (1854-1943) aus Brüssel, einem der bedeutendsten europäischen Friedensaktivisten aus der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, 1913 ausgezeichnet mit dem Friedensnobelpreis. Den Veteranen der Dokumentationsbewegung wird der Name auch heute noch etwas sagen, waren es doch La Fontaine und sein Freund Paul Otlet, die 1892 das Office International de Bibliographie (OIB) gründeten; getragen von der Idee einer weltweiten universalen Gesamtdokumentation. Mit der Anerkennung des OIB durch die belgische Regierung und der Gründung des Institut International de Bibliographie (IIB) im gleichen Jahr nimmt die moderne Dokumentationsbewegung ihren Lauf. Aus dem IIB wird 1931 das Institut International de Documentation (IID) und 1937 die Fédération Internationale de Documentation (FID); die Dezimalklassifikation (DK) wird zum Ordnungssystem der Universaldokumentation erklärt. Die Anerkennung und Förderung durch die belgische Regierung hatte einen realen Hintergrund. La Fontaine war seit 1894 sozialistischer Abgeordneter im belgischen Parlament - seit 1893 auch Professor für Internationales Recht in Brüssel - und hatte sich schon als junger Anwalt kompromisslos mit Fragen der Friedenserhaltung befasst. Es war nur folgerichtig, dass er zu der Erkenntnis gelangte, dass Dokumentation -und damit Information-ein notweniges und damit unverzichtbares Werkzeug zur Völkerverständigung ist. Die Beschäftigung mit der Dokumentation hat aber auch auf seine internationalen Aktivitäten zurückgewirkt. So ist die Idee zur Gründung einer Union der internationalen Organisationen (1907) bei seiner Arbeit im IIB entstanden, das "Yearbook of International Organizations" ist eine Folge davon. La Fontaine war ein überaus vielseitiger Politiker und Jurist. Die Liste seiner Interessen ist lang: Präsident des Internationalen Friedensbüros von 1907 bis an sein Lebensende, belgischer Delegierter bei Friedenskonferenzen; er befasste sich mit Fragen der Abrüstung, der Gründung eines Zusammenschlusses der Nationalstaaten wie der eines Weltgerichtshofs. Und nicht zuletzt setzte er sich für die Rechte der Frauen und den Achtstundenarbeitstag ein. Er war im wahrsten Sinne ein Initiator auf vielen Gebieten. Dass La Fontaine vergessen wurde, hat sicher viele Gründe: Viele seiner Ideen sind heute banale Wirklichkeit. Während der Zeit des nationalsozialistischen Regimes, in der sich die Dokumentation in Deutschland weitgehend formierte und die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Dokumentation 1941 entstand, war er eine Unperson, deren Namen man nicht nannte. Und schließlich: Dokumentation war für ihn nur ein Werkzeug, weder Ideologie, noch Wissenschaft, noch Geschäft, es lohnt sich, daran zu erinnern."

    Abstract
    ILEKS (Internet-Lektoratsservice) als Nachnutzung des BINE-Projekts läuft derzeit als Initiative der Stadtbibliotheken in Bremen, Berlin, Paderborn und Hannover sowie der Büchereizentrale Schleswig-Holstein und der Landesfachstelle für Öffentliche Bibliotheken an der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek. Die Konsortialpartner wählen zu den Themenbereichen "Reisen", "Krebs", "Computer", "Computerspiele", "Kriminalliteratur", "Musik" sowie "Berlin" und "Bremen" Internetquellen aus, bewerten und erschließen sie. Um diesen Dienstleistungsservice thematisch zu erweitern, muss die Beteiligung auf eine breitere Basis gestellt werden. Dazu gibt es eine Initiative des dbv, die mit externer Finanzierung durch zwei private Partner, der Bertelsmann-Stiftung und der SISIS GmbH, ein weiterführendes Projekt "Internetbibliothek. de" ins Leben gerufen hat. Das Konzept ILEKS und die bis dato gemachten Erfahrungen sind ein wichtiger Meilen- und Baustein der Online-Distribution neuer Servicedienstleistungen der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken für Wissen und Information!

    Abstract
    Wie lernen Kinder sprechen? Welche Hinweise geben gerade ihre Fehler beim Spracherwerb auf den Ablauf des Lernprozesses - getreu dem Motto: "Kinder sagen die töllsten Sachen«? Und wie helfen beziehungsweise warum scheitern bislang Computer bei der Simulation neuronaler Netzwerke, die am komplizierten Gewebe der menschlichen Sprache mitwirken? In seinem neuen Buch Wörter und Regeln hat der bekannte US-amerikanische Kognitionswissenschaftler Steven Pinker (Der Sprachinstinkt) wieder einmal eine ebenso informative wie kurzweifige Erkundungstour ins Reich der Sprache unternommen. Was die Sache besonders spannend und lesenswert macht: Souverän beleuchtet der Professor am Massachusetts Institute of Technology sowohl natur- als auch geisteswissenschaftliche Aspekte. So vermittelt er einerseits linguistische Grundlagen in den Fußspuren Ferdinand de Saussures, etwa die einer generativen Grammatik, liefert einen Exkurs durch die Sprachgeschichte und widmet ein eigenes Kapitel den Schrecken der deutschen Sprache". Andererseits lässt er aber auch die neuesten bildgebenden Verfahren nicht außen vor, die zeigen, was im Gehirn bei der Sprachverarbeitung abläuft. Pinkers Theorie, die sich in diesem Puzzle verschiedenster Aspekte wiederfindet: Sprache besteht im Kein aus zwei Bestandteilen - einem mentalen Lexikon aus erinnerten Wörtern und einer mentalen Grammatik aus verschiedenen kombinatorischen Regeln. Konkret heißt das: Wir prägen uns bekannte Größen und ihre abgestuften, sich kreuzenden Merkmale ein, aber wir erzeugen auch neue geistige Produkte, in dem wir Regeln anwenden. Gerade daraus, so schließt Pinker, erschließt sich der Reichtum und die ungeheure Ausdruckskraft unserer Sprache
