    Abstract
Communication studies at present have reached an impasse because of the proliferation of competing theories, none of which is fully explanatory. 4 main paradigms can be distinguished, deriving respectively from studies of mass communication developed in the US; the French school, focusing on communication 'messages'; the Frankfurt school, originating in the critique of modern industrial society; and Latin American theorists, concerned with cultural domination and imperialism. The way forward lies in establishing some linkage - a harmonious polyphony - between these divergent views, by taking language as the nodal point since this is the necassary common basis of all communication

    Abstract
Communcation theory attempts to systematise the knowledge generated in this field. Problems result from the variety of approaches used, based on sociology and semiotics; and from its roots in socio-historical developments, which have given rise to numerous schools of thought in the 20th century. These can be grouped thematically to provide a global framework, comprising: the communication process; messages; reception; and the social production of communication. Establishing common links between these partial views is one path towards developing an overall theory but this negates the innate complexity which is the essence of communication

    Abstract
In Brazil, librarianship courses focus on practical applications of information retrieval tools (thesauri, classification schemes) and exclude theory and methodology, so students are not equipped to develop new tools or evaluate existing ones. Proposes a knowledge base drawing on both classification theory (Ranganathan) and theories about knowledge (Wüster), thus using both hierarchical and relational approaches to organising concepts, to establish a dynamic theory of knowledge as methodology for the study of documentation languages

    Abstract
Hypertexts are electronic documents divided into interconnected fragments of text, which can be accessed directly thus evading the limitations of the linear structure of printed documents. The user can interact dynamically with the information and establish new relations. Describes the component features of such systems (hard and software) in relation to their applications (macro-literary, problem exploration, generic). The advantages of flexible organisation of texts, reference linkage and simultaneous access outweigh such disadvantages as the problem of constructing systems for a range of diverse user needs, making hypertext a significant aid to creative thinking

    Abstract
SIPORbase, the System for Indexing in Portuguese, was developed by the National Library of Portugal, based on the LCSH. In contrast to the Brunet-Parguez system used in France, SIPORbase is a coextensive indexing language. Its initial application in 1989 to current bibliography has been extended to the collection of codices. Experience with manuscripts only indicates a high degree of relevance in retrieval, from the several hundred subject headings created so far

    Abstract
Report on research carried out in Brazil for a doctoral thesis, investigating the possibility of using the PRECIS indexing system for documents in Portuguese. Discusses the theoretical basis of PRECIS, and presents the resultss of a study in comparing the use PRECIS to index 2 samples of documents, in English and Portuguese respectively. Concludes that, with minor modifications to take account of the differences in structure between the 2 languages. PRECIS could produce satisfactory results for documents in Portuguese. This suggests the further possibility that PRECIS - because of its sound logical basis rather than its complex linguistic theory - could become a multilingual indexing system.

    Abstract
The status of indexing as a science is much disouted on the grounds that it depends essentially on the subjective view of the indexer. Given an epistemological perspective, however, this argument cannot be sustained. Indexing, like all modern sciences, has clearly defined objectives (e.g. the Unesco definition) and methods (identification of the indexing phrase, then translation into the indexing language), and the outcome can be evaluated in terms of specific criteria (effectiveness, efficiency, value)
