- Abstract
- The library of the Cité des Sciences et de l'industrie attracts 4.000 visitors daily of whom 25% consult the GEAC system OPAC. Describes a 1992 survey consisting of online questions followed by an interview. The questionnaires were adapted from ones used in the UK and utilised OLIVE (Online Interactive Validation and Evaluation). While difficulties arose from users' inconsistency in their replies and failures to answer questions, it has become clear that subject access is unsatisfactory, sometimes because of mistyping by the searcher but also because of the vocabulary problems and lack of guidance in search strategies

- Abstract
- Reports of a study in a Chilean university library, comparing 100 users of online databases and CD-ROMs with 100 users of non-computerized bibliographical resources. Results showed that users tended to be teachers / researchers, and potential users were postgraduate students. Comparison of search results showed online searching improved results and saved time. The chief reasons for non-use were ignorance of the service and use of own personal computer. The study indicated the need to review policy on database acquisition and improve promotion of the service. In general, librarians should motivate greater use of online searching by providing skilled intermediary services to maximize uptake

- Abstract
- A survey of catalogue use in 1993 at Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed considerable dissatisfaction with the online catalogue's subject search facilities. Of those who used subject searching 64% preferred subject headings against only 2% who chose classification schedules. Library users make little use of the existing facilities for assistance and leaflets which are available in the library. It has, therefore, been decided to provide a programme of instruction in library use and to move towards a unified system of subject access to the library's catalogue

- Abstract
- An exploratory research study on OPACs was done within the framework of the French PARINFO program by four different teams: ENSSIB-CERSI, City Univ. of London, Médiathèque of the Cité des Sciences et de l'industrie and a firm GSI-ERLI. During the month of June 1992, 650 individual searches on four terminals were collected. The sessions were automatically recorded, accompanied by two online questionnaires, a pre-search and a post-search questionnaire. Some questions were asked orally by an interviewer and the answers noted. The article analyses the researches perceived by user as difficult or impossible. Some examples of the difficulties are given

- Abstract
- Account of a limited experimental study at the Bibliothèque Publique d'Informations (BPI), the Paris multimedia public library, to establish a methodology for investigating user interactions with new technology. A wide range of materials are available at the BPI, including CD-ROMs and the Internet. Preliminary observations indicate that users do not follow the pattern dictated by the machine, but take approaches based on their own experience and skills. Setbacks are generally interpreted as defects in the software, not personla failure to master the system. Large scale qualitative abservation, using research methods from the social sciences, would establish a knowledge base for developing user skills to exploit multimedia resources more fully

- Reports on 4 experiments conducted at Sheffield University, Department of Information Studies, UK, into cognitive models which illuminate how people learn using electronic media. - The Guidelines are a toolbox for libraries to answer for their performance indicators which are described in detail aimed at improving the effectivity of the library: do the opening hours meet the demand of users? To what extent do users find the books they are looking for? In how far do the services of the library fulfil the expectations of the users? - Abstract
- Presents some results from research into the uses and usefulness of electronic bibliographic databases in academic contexts, carried out as part of a British Library funded research project. Ethnographic and focus group data was gathered initially in 3 departments (natural science, social science and humanities) at the University of Kent at Canterbury covering all academic staff, researchers and postgraduates. This was then expanded to postgraduates and staff in the same 3 disciplines at other universities. 5 themes from this research are outlined: who uses the system, who does not, and where are these activities and inactivities happening; where does formal training occur; and where does learning occur. The problems of interface between computer systems and users often mirrored that between library enquiry staff and users where users did not know to frame questions and the advice given was not in a form understood by the users

- Abstract
- Summarizes findings of an international study on information-seeking habits and preferences: With extensive input from hundreds of librarians and OCLC staff, the OCLC Market Research team developed a project and commissioned Harris Interactive Inc. to survey a representative sample of information consumers. In June of 2005, we collected over 3,300 responses from information consumers in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Perceptions report provides the findings and responses from the online survey in an effort to learn more about: * Library use * Awareness and use of library electronic resources * Free vs. for-fee information * The "Library" brand The findings indicate that information consumers view libraries as places to borrow print books, but they are unaware of the rich electronic content they can access through libraries. Even though information consumers make limited use of these resources, they continue to trust libraries as reliable sources of information.

- Abstract
- Report of a study at the University of Montreal (Quebec) analysing research on the behaviour of children using information technology (online databases, CD-ROM, computerised catalogues). From a range of publications covering 6-12 year olds in the US, Canada, Europe and Oceania common features were identified: (1) children's cognitive development does not match the structured approach required for this type of information research, (2) the main abrriers were physical (e.g. using keyboard), intellectual (no capacity for abstract reasoning) and social (little access to computers); (3) in terms of natural skills, boys has greater abilities than girls. Results indicate the need to make technology more appropriate for children, and train libarrians to recognise the real capacities and limitations of children so they can teach them the basic skills

- Abstract
- The degree of variability in the percentage of subject searching in an online public access catalog (OPAC) among branch libraries of one university was studied. A full semester's worth of transactions was analyzed, not sampled. The time units used were hour of the day, day of the week, and week of the semester. The findings show that subject searching varies from a low of 22% to a high of 74% over the hours of a day. Variability for the days of the week ranged from 17% to 64%, and for the weeks of the semester variability ranged from 12% to 70%. Valuable management information on the utilization of the OPAC within each brach library and among all the branch libraries is provided through numerous charts and graphs.
