- Abstract
- Reports on the results of a transaction analysis and user survey, evaluating a pilot system for computerized community information in a public library, based on the GDIS system (Gemeenschaps Informatie Documentair System). The non hierarchical and global approach to the integrated database proved to be useful for novice users. Out of many parameters only frequency of use correlates with retrieval success. The online questionnaire proved to be worthwhile although restricted in scope. The logbook transaction analysis yielded a rich amount of useful management information for the systems managers. The user survey yielded a rich set of data on which to perform statistical analyses according to social science practice, from which some interesting relations could be detected

- Abstract
- Reports of a study in a Chilean university library, comparing 100 users of online databases and CD-ROMs with 100 users of non-computerized bibliographical resources. Results showed that users tended to be teachers / researchers, and potential users were postgraduate students. Comparison of search results showed online searching improved results and saved time. The chief reasons for non-use were ignorance of the service and use of own personal computer. The study indicated the need to review policy on database acquisition and improve promotion of the service. In general, librarians should motivate greater use of online searching by providing skilled intermediary services to maximize uptake

- Describes a study of journal use by students using university libraries for the purpose of preparing theses i.e. students who are both users and producers of information. - Arjo Klamer, professor of the economics of art and culture at Rotterdam's Erasmus University, was involved in the government-sponsored national debate on the place of knowledge in tomorrow's society. Klamer believes that changes in society will require a system of continuing training for its citizens.
