Denn Rückkopplungsschleifen sind Hauptgegenstand der Kybernetik, die von Steuerungs- und Kommunikationsprozessen bei Tieren, Menschen und Maschinen handelt. Als ihr Vater gilt der Mathematiker Norbert Wiener (1894-1964); für ihre Weiterentwicklung und Verbreitung sorgte ganz wesentlich der Physiker Heinz von Foerster. In Deutschland ist »Wissen und Gewissen - Versuch einer Brücke« wohl sein bekanntestes Buch. In vielen, auch in den Geisteswissenschaften sehr beachteten Arbeiten über die Eigenschaften natürlicher und technischer Systeme schuf er Grundlagen für die Entwicklung von Computern und künstlicher Intelligenz sowie für das Verstehen der menschlichen Kommunikation und der Organisation menschlichen Zusammenlebens. Der in Wien geborene Heinz von Foerster gab nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg der experimentellen Kognitionsforschung in den USA eine völlig neue Richtung: Das Verhalten eines lebendigen Organismus wird weder monokausal von innen noch von außen gesteuert, sondern der Organismus steuert sich selbst, indem er Eigenverhalten bildet. Dieser Prozess kann als mathematische Iteration verstanden werden, die gegen einen Fixpunkt strebt; er ist unter den Namen »Autopoiese« und »Selbstorganisation« populär geworden. Erst heute, nachdem wesentlich einfachere mathematische Iterationen in den Fraktalen eine eingängige bildliche Darstellung gefunden haben, wird die Bedeutung dieser neuen Sichtweise allmählich erkannt und gewürdigt. Heinz von Foerster entfaltete seine Auffassungen in der Auseinandersetzung mit der frühen Kybernetik und deren Gründervätern Norbert Wiener und Warren S. McCulloch (1898-1972). Er gründete und leitete fast zwanzig Jahre das Biological Computer Laboratory an der University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (südlich von Chicago), ein Zentrum, an dem Physiker, Mathematiker, Biologen, Mediziner, Techniker und Philosophen gemeinsam logischen und methodischen Problemen nachgingen, die das Erkennen des Erkennens aufwirft. Monika Bröcker, einer freien Wissenschaftlerin und Autorin, die seit 1998 eng mit von Foerster zusammenarbeitet, ist es durch hartnäckiges Fragen gelungen, ihrem Helden neben einer sehr verständlichen populärwissenschaftlichen Darlegung seiner Hauptgedanken seine bislang ausführlichste Biografie zu entlocken. Am meisten besticht an diesem Buch die Einheit von Inhalt und Form. Seine Dialogform weckt Assoziationen zu den überlieferten antiken Dialogen von Sokrates, den Unterredungen von Galileo Galilei und den Gesprächen des ebenfalls prominenten Kybernetikers und Systerntheoretikers Gregory Bateson (19041980) mit seiner Tochter, die dieser in seinem Buch »Ökologie des Geistes« als »Metaloge« bezeichnete. Im ersten Akt suchen Autor und Autorin nach der geeigneten Darstellungsform. Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen wird gewährt, und die Bühne wird ausgemessen. Dann erfolgt eine Art Tango um die Themen Kybernetik, Ethik und Konstruktivismus: Fragen und Gegenfragen wechseln sich mit »'Biss« ab. Provozierende Angriffe werden jäh in respektvoller Empathie gebremst. Dabei werden recht beunruhigende Fragen aufgeworfen: Wenn unsere Welt auf Axiomen beruht, ist dann nicht die Veränderung eines Axioms eine Veränderung der Welt? Wenn wir die Axiome frei wählen können, sind wir dann nicht für diese Welt verantwortlich? Der zweite Akt widmet sich autobiografischen Erinnerungen und Familiengeschichten Heinz von Foersters. Lesende werden unvermittelt vom Strudel der Umwälzungen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erfasst: Neben philosophischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Ereignissen werden die aufkommende Frauenbewegung, die Entdeckung der fernöstlichen Philosophie und das Zerbröseln bürgerlicher Moralvorstellungen in pointierten Anekdoten illustriert. Es folgen Schilderungen der faschistischen Diktatur, der Kriegs- und Nachkriegsjahre sowie der akademischen Kultur in den USA.
