- Die Illustration Googles von Jude Buffum kann als stenografischer Hinweis auf die "Vergoogelung" gelesen werden, ein Terminus, der 2003 eingeführt wurde, um das Einsickern der Suchtechnologien und Ästhetik dieses Medienunternehmens in immer mehr Web-Applikationen und Kontexte, sogar in traditionsreiche Einrichtungen wie Bibliotheken zu bezeichnen. Der Medienwissenschaftler Siva Vaidhyanathan schreibt in einem Blog-Eintrag über sein Buch The Googlization of Everything, dass Google die "Spielregeln für mindestens sechs Wirtschaftsbranchen geändert hat: Werbung, Software, geographische Dienste, E-Mail, das Verlagswesen und den Online-Handel selbst".

- Abstract
- PageRank is defined as the stationary state of a Markov chain. The chain is obtained by perturbing the transition matrix induced by a web graph with a damping factor alpha that spreads uniformly part of the rank. The choice of alpha is eminently empirical, and in most cases the original suggestion alpha=0.85 by Brin and Page is still used. Recently, however, the behaviour of PageRank with respect to changes in alpha was discovered to be useful in link-spam detection. Moreover, an analytical justification of the value chosen for alpha is still missing. In this paper, we give the first mathematical analysis of PageRank when alpha changes. In particular, we show that, contrarily to popular belief, for real-world graphs values of alpha close to 1 do not give a more meaningful ranking. Then, we give closed-form formulae for PageRank derivatives of any order, and an extension of the Power Method that approximates them with convergence O(t**k*alpha**t) for the k-th derivative. Finally, we show a tight connection between iterated computation and analytical behaviour by proving that the k-th iteration of the Power Method gives exactly the PageRank value obtained using a Maclaurin polynomial of degree k. The latter result paves the way towards the application of analytical methods to the study of PageRank.

- Abstract
- Query suggestion is generally an integrated part of web search engines. In this study, we first redefine and reduce the query suggestion problem as "comparison of queries". We then propose a general modular framework for query suggestion algorithm development. We also develop new query suggestion algorithms which are used in our proposed framework, exploiting query, session and user features. As a case study, we use query logs of a real educational search engine that targets K-12 students in Turkey. We also exploit educational features (course, grade) in our query suggestion algorithms. We test our framework and algorithms over a set of queries by an experiment and demonstrate a 66-90% statistically significant increase in relevance of query suggestions compared to a baseline method.

Wer an der Diskussion um die Rolle der meistgenutzten Suchmaschine in unserer Gesellschaft Interesse hat, findet in diesem Buch reichlich Material und Ideen. Jeder Beitrag wird zudem durch ein Literaturverzeichnis ergänzt, in dem weiterführende Quellen genannt werden. Die Beiträge sind durchweg "lesbar" geschrieben und nur in mässigem Ausmass von soziologischem oder rechtswissenschaftlichem Fachjargon durchsetzt. In stilistischer Hinsicht ist der Text dennoch nicht ohne Probleme, zumal bereits im ersten Absatz der Einleitung ein als Hauptsatz "verkaufter" Nebensatz auffällt ("Denn Suchmaschinenbetreiber wie Google ermöglichen und gestalten den Zugang zu Informationen im Netz.") und die gleiche stilistische Schwäche allein in der 19-seitigen Einleitung in über einem Dutzend weiterer Fälle registriert werden kann, vom nächsten Beitrag gar nicht zu sprechen. Ein funktionierendes Verlagslektorat hätte derlei rigoros bereinigen müssen. Es hätte eventuell auch dafür Sorge tragen können, dass am Ende des Bandes nicht nur ein Verzeichnis der Autorinnen und Autoren aufscheint, sondern auch ein Sachregister - ein solches fehlt nämlich bedauerlicherweise. In optischer Hinsicht ist der Hardcover-Band ansprechend gestaltet und gut gelungen. Der Preis liegt mit rund 80 Euro leider in der Oberklasse; auch die E-Book-Version macht die Anschaffung nicht billiger, da kein Preisunterschied zur gebundenen Ausgabe besteht. Dennoch ist das Buch aufgrund der interessanten Inhalte durchaus zu empfehlen; grössere Bibliotheken sowie kommunikations- und informationswissenschaftliche Spezialsammlungen sollten es nach Möglichkeit erwerben."
