Das Rahmenthema der Tagung kam aufgrund des vor und nach der ISKO-Konferenz abgehaltenen "UN World Summit an an Information Society" zustande. Im Titel des Buches ist die "globale Wissensgesellschaft" freilich eher irreführend, da keiner der darin abgedruckten Beiträge zentral davon handelt. Der eine der beiden Vorträge, die den Begriff selbst im Titel anführen, beschäftigt sich mit der Konstruktion einer Taxonomie für "cultural literacy" (O'Keefe), der andere mit sogenannten "naiven Klassifikationssystemen" (Beghtol), d.h. solchen, die im Gegensatz zu "professionellen" Systemen von Personen ohne spezifisches Interesse an klassifikatorischen Fragen entwickelt wurden. Beiträge mit "multi-kulti"-Charakter behandeln etwa Fragen wie - kulturübergreifende Arbeit, etwa beim EU-Filmarchiv-Projekt Collate (Albrechtsen et al.) oder einem Projekt zur Maori-Kultur (Liew); - Mehrsprachigkeit bzw. Übersetzung, z.B. der koreanischen Dezimalklassifikation (Kwasnik & Chun), eines auf der Sears ListofSubject Headings basierenden slowenischen Schlagwortvokabulars (Zalokar), einer spanisch-englischen Schlagwortliste für Gesundheitsfragen (Rosemblat et al.); - universelle Klassifikationssysteme wie die Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation (Joan Mitchell über die DDC 22, sowie zwei weitere Beiträge) und die Internationale Dezimalklassifikation (la McIlwaine über Geographika, Nancy Williamson über Alternativ- und Komplementärmedizin in der UDC). Unter den 55 Beiträgen finden sich folgende - aus der Sicht des Rezensenten - besonders interessante thematische "Cluster": - OPAC-orientierte Beiträge, etwa über die Anforderungen bei derAutomatisierung analytisch-synthetischer Klassifikationssysteme (Slavic & Cordeiro) sowie Beiträge zu Benutzerforschung und -verhalten (Lee & Clyde; Miller); - Erschliessung und Retrieval von visuellen bzw. multimedialen Ressourcen, insbesondere mit Ausrichtung auf Thesauri (Hudin; Garcia Jimenez & De Valle Gastaminza; Rafferty & Hidderley); - Thesaurus-Standards (Dextre Clark et al.), Thesauri und Endbenutzer (Shiri & Revie); - Automatisches Klassifizieren (Vizine-Goetz & Beall mit Bezug auf die DDC; Na et al. über methodische Ansätze bei der Klassifizierung von Produktbesprechungen nach positiven bzw. negativen Gefühlsäusserungen); - Beiträge über (hierzulande) weniger bekannte Systeme wie Facettenklassifikation einschliesslich der Bliss-Klassifikation sowie der Umsetzung der Ideen von Ranganathan durch E.J. Coates (vier Vorträge), die Sachs-Klassifikation (Sachs & Smiraglia) sowie M. S. van der Walts Schema zur Klassifizierung elektronischer Dokumente in Klein- und Mittelbetrieben. Auch die übrigen Beiträge sind mehrheitlich interessant geschrieben und zeugen vom fachlichen Qualitätsstandard der ISKO-Konferenzen. Der Band kann daher bibliothekarischen bzw. informationswissenschaftlichen Ausbildungseinrichtungen sowie Bibliotheken mit Sammelinteresse für Literatur zu Klassifikationsfragen ausdrücklich empfohlen werden. Ausserdem darf der nächsten (= neunten) internationalen ISKO-Konferenz, die 2006 in Wien abgehalten werden soll, mit Interesse entgegengesehen werden.

Illing): "Die Hirnforschung ist eine der erfolgreichsten wissenschaftlichen Unternehmungen der Gegenwart«, stellt der Wiener Wissenschaftshistoriker Erhard Oeser fest, ihre Geschichte sei jedoch neben Erfolgsmeldungen auch durch »Irrtümer, Kontroversen und Grausamkeiten« gekennzeichnet. Oeser ist es in beispielhafter Weise gelungen, alle Dimensionen dieser Geschichte in flüssiger Sprache und zumeist sogar spannend aufzuweisen. Die Darstellung erfolgt chronologisch und beginnt mit der schon in Steinzeitkulturen praktizierten Schädelöffnung (Trepanation), die »in den Bereich der medizinischen Hirnforschung hinein« reicht. Forscher der klassischen Antike hatten durch Experimente an lebenden Schafen den Unterschied zwischen sensorischen und motorischen (Sinnes- und Bewegungs-)Nerven entdeckt. In den Hohlräumen im Gehirn, den Ventrikeln, vermuteten sie den Sitz des lebendigen Geistes (spiritus animalis). Nach einer kurzen Würdigung mittelalterlicher Lehren geht Oeser zu den neuen, von mechanistischen Funktionsvorstellungen geprägten Konzepten der Renaissance über. Dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert ist jeweils ein ganzes Kapitel gewidmet. Über weite Passagen sind Oesers Ausführungen packend. Durch das ganze Buch zieht sich die Darstellung des mehrmaligen Wechsels zweier Grundauffassungen: Jede Leistung des Gehirns sei in einem bestimmten Areal lokalisiert (diese Auffassung nahm immer dann Aufschwung, wenn ein solches Areal entdeckt wurde); und im Prinzip sei jedes Stück Hirngewebe, vor allem in der Großhirnrinde, zu jeder Leistung fähig (»Äquipotenzialität«). Der Leser erfährt, welche Irrwege begangen wurden, bis der Zusammenhang von tierischer mit neuronaler Elektrizität zu Tage trat. Mit viel Sorgfalt werden Aufstieg und Fall der Phrenologie geschildert. Oeser beschreibt nicht nur, worüber die frühen Hirnforscher Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) und Camillo Golgi (1843-1926) stritten, ob nämlich eine Nervenzelle ein strukturell autonomes Gebilde oder übergangslos mit ihresgleichen verbunden sei, sondern berücksichtigt auch die emotionale Dynamik dieses Teils der Geschichte. Gegen Ende seines Buches gibt Oeser eine Übersicht über die moderne Hirntod-Debatte. Bemerkenswert ist auch die Dokumentation der zahllosen Grausamkeiten, die im Namen der Hirnforschung begangen wurden. In der Antike wurden nicht nur Verstümmelungen lebender Tiere, sondern auch Experimente an Verbrechern, »solange sie noch atmeten«, durchgeführt. Einige Forscher konnten ihre Vivisektionen nur mit Mühe vor sich selbst rechtfertigten, indem sie die Legitimität ihres Wissensdurstes beteuerten. Besonders grausam ging Friedrich L. Goltz (1834-1902) zu Werke, der große Teile des Gehirns von Hunden »mit Brunnenwasser« ausspülte, um zu erfahren, welche ihrer Verhaltensweisen danach noch übrig blieben. Oeser zitiert hier den Hirnforscher Roger Sperry (1913-1994), der die Geschichte seiner eigenen Wissenschaft als »Liste schwerer Straftaten« bezeichnet hat. Oeser beeindruckt über weite Strecken durch die Präzision seiner Quellenarbeit und die differenzierte Darstellung divergierender Standpunkte. An vielen Stellen hat er dabei bisher unbekannte oder wenig beachtete historische Aspekte zu Tage gefördert und durch gut ausgewählte Zitate illustriert. Wichtige Entwicklungen werden jedoch übergangen. Zum Beispiel fehlen Hinweise auf die Psychophysik des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine Darstellung der Geschichte der Hirnforschung im 20. Jahrhundert enthält nur am Rande eine Passage über das für die moderne Hirnforschung fundamentale Konzept des rezeptiven Feldes. Auch die Entwicklung zur heute dominierenden Vorstellung des Gehirns als informationsverarbeitendes Netzwerk wird nur gestreift. Bedauerlicherweise verweist Oeser bei der Behandlung der letzten fünfzig Jahre oft nur noch auf Sekundärliteratur.
