    Abstract
    Provides information for people who want (or need) to know what the SGML is and want to make use of it. Gives a fairly detailed description of what SGML is, why it exists, and provides a list of SGML players who are actively involved in either developing tools, providing services, offering consultancy or enganging in research for SGML. Describes the SGML work undertaken at Hatfield Polytechnic as part of Project Quartet funded by the British Library Research and Development Dept. The results and findings conclude that SGML forms a strong backbone for present and future document handling systems

    Abstract
    Report of a project commissioned by British Library Research and Development Department (BLRDD) from Electronic Publishing Services Ltd designed to provide factual input about electronic publishing in the UK for a worlking party convened by the British Library as part of a follow up to the Information 2000 exercise, completed in 1991. The working party will consider the possible impacts on the library community of the development of electronic publishing. For the purpose of this study, electronic publishing was defined as including: online services (including videotex); magnetic tape services; magnetic disk products; CD-ROM and other optical disc products; ROM cards; and electronic periodicals. The main conclusions were: that the dominant position of Reuters and other financial information services means that online information retrieval still accounts for the vast majority of electronic publishing revenues; that CD-ROM is experiencing high growth, but growth from a small base and coming later than predicted; that network publishing is still in the experimental stage and almost entirely funded from the public sector; that ROM cards, which provide the medium for hand held electronic reference books are still present in the market and represent the only mass market channel; and that other electronic media (magnetic tape, magnetic disk, analogue videodisc) are not seen as having a significant part to play

    Abstract
    During 1996, the number of scholarly periodicals, either commercially published or free, available in electronic form increased rapidly. The Cafe Jus project took advantage of this critical mass of electronic journals to mount a user study with taught postgraduate students, research students and academic and research staff in various disciplines at Loughborough University. The main conclusions were that: low-level technical problems are still a deterrent to use of electronic journals; people prefer not to read at length on screen, but printing out is slow, commercial publishers tend to follow the lead of technology rather than consider the convenience of their users; at present there is a significant need for user training, exacerbated by the variety of publishers' interface and their speed of change; and free journals using HTML arre preferred to commercial journals using PDF for convenience of reading but are regarded as lower in academic quality

    Abstract
    Über die letzten Jahrzehnte ist die Menge digitaler Publikationen exponentiell angestiegen. Doch die digitalen Bestände sind durch die schleichende Obsoletheit von Datenformaten, Software und Hardware bedroht. Aber auch die zunehmende Komplexität neuerer Dokumente und zugehöriger Abspielumgebungen stellt ein Problem dar. Das Thema der Langzeitarchivierung wurde lange vernachlässigt, rückt aber zunehmend ins Bewusstsein der Verantwortlichen und der Öffentlichkeit, nicht zuletzt wegen spektakulärer Datenverluste. Ziel dieser Studie ist es, Grundlagen und Bausteine für eine technische Lösung zu entwickeln und deren Einbettung in die Aufgabenbereiche einer Archivierungsorganisation aufzuzeigen. Es fehlt eine systematische Herangehensweise zum Aufbau technischen Wissens, die der Heterogenität und Komplexität sowie der bereits vorhandenen Obsoletheit in der Welt des digitalen Publizierens gerecht wird. In einem ersten Schritt entwickeln wir deshalb ein Modell, das sich spezifisch den technischen Aspekten digitaler Objekte widmet. Dieses Modell erlaubt es, digitale Objekte bezüglich der Archivierungsaspekte zu charakterisieren und zu klassifizieren sowie technische Grundlagen präzise zuzuordnen. Auf dieser Basis können u. a. systematisch modulare Metadatenschemata gewonnen werden, die den Langzeiterhalt gezielt unterstützen. Das Modell liefert außerdem einen Beitrag zur Formulierung von zugehörigen Ontologien. Des Weiteren fördern die Modularität der Metadatenschemata und die einheitliche Begrifflichkeit einer Ontologie die Föderation und Kooperation von Archivierungsorganisationen und -systemen. Die Abstützung auf das entwickelte Modell systematisiert in einem weiteren Schritt die Herleitung von technisch orientierten Prozessen zur Erfüllung von Archivierungsaufgaben. Der Entwicklung eines eigenen Modells liegt die Einschätzung zu Grunde, dass Referenzmodelle, wie OAIS (Open Archival Information System), zwar eine geeignete Ausgangsbasis auf konzeptioneller Ebene bieten, aber sie sind zu generell und beschreiben vor- oder nachgelagerte Prozesse nur als Schnittstelle. Die aus dem Modell hergeleiteten Lösungsansätze sind zunächst unabhängig von einer konkreten Realisierung. Als Beitrag zur Umsetzung wird in einem eigenen Abschnitt der Einsatz von Datenbankmanagementsystemen (DBMS) als Implementierungsbasis ausführlich diskutiert.
