- "Pyramiden, Tempel, Kathedralen seitdem der Mensch seinen Marsch aus grauer Vorzeit in die bekannte Geschichte antrat, errichtete er seinen Göttern Heiligtümer. Der Mensch der Steinzeit verfügte über Handwerkszeuge, das Feuer, die Jagd und kulturelle Umgangsformen. Das Erstaunlichste und den Menschen am weitesten vom Tier Unterscheidende ist jedoch seine bereits in frühen Felsbildern aufscheinende Fähigkeit zur Abstraktion, zur Kunst, zu magischen und mystischen Empfindungen. Schätzungen zufolge hat die Menschheit bislang rund 100 000 verschiedene Religionen hervorgebracht. "Im fundamentalen Begriff der Symbolisierung", so schreibt die US-Philosophin Susanne K Langer, gleichviel ob mystischer, praktischer oder mathematischer Art - liegt der Schlüssel zu aller menschlicher Existenz." Eine der gewaltigsten Erfindungen des menschlichen Gehirns ist dabei der Glauben an ein höheres Wesen. Langer nennt es die Geburtsstunde aller menschlichen Entwicklung, die offensichtlich biologischen Bedürfnissen entspringed müsse: "Die Eroberung der Welt durch den Menschen beruht zweifellos auf der überlegenen Entwicklung seines Gehirns."!Und dieses Bedürfnis nach dem Spirituellen, des Glaubens als Symbolbildung durchdringt wie Essen, Trinken oder Sexualität die gesamte menschliche Bedürfnisstruktur mit einer für Susanne K. Langer "geradezu unheimlichen Kraft". Diese Kraft hat ihren Sitz im Gehirn, von dessen feiner Struktur die Wissenschaft bis heute gerade erste Vorahnungen entwickelt, immer wieder aufs Neue überwältigt von der gewaltigen Leitungsfähigkeit und Komplexität unseres Denkorgans. Doch wo sitzt die Seele - und erlaubt die Wissenschaft überhaupt eine? Das sind Fragen, die bislang vornehmlich von Theologen und Philosophen diskutiert wurden und die nun auch die Naturwissenschaften erreichen, genauer gesagt, die Gehirnforscher. Warum Gott die Menschen auch im Zeitalter von Quanten-Computer und Genforschung nicht verlassen wird, das haben die Neuropsychologen Andrew Newberg und sein vor kurzem verstorbener Kollege Eugene d'Aquili seit zehn Jahren an der Universität Philadelphia erforscht. Bei Gebet und Meditation von Buddhisten und Franziskaner-Nonnen zeichneten die Wissenschaftler mit einer Spect-Kamera (Single Photonen Emissions Computer Tomographie) die Hirnaktivitäten auf Dabei entdeckten sie, dass im Moment des Transzendierens - auch kosmisches Bewusstsein genannt - eine kleine Region im hinteren Teil des Neokortex ihre Aktivitäten einstellt.
