    Abstract
    Objetivo: Este estudo tem como objetivo compreender como o modelo de dados Simple Knowledge Organization System e seus modelos de extensão tem sido utilizado para promover a interoperabilidade com outros vocabulários e refinar as relações semânticas em tesauros na web. Metodologia: Utiliza a pesquisa documental nos guias de referência dos modelos de dados utilizados para representar os tesauros na web. Resultados: os modelos de dados têm sido utilizados para representar os termos e suas variações linguísticas, os relacionamentos entre grupos e subgrupos de conceitos, numa perspectiva intra-vocabulários, e os relacionamentos entre conceitos de vocabulários distintos, numa perspectiva inter-vocabulários. Conclusões: O uso do Simple Knowledge Organization System, e dos seus modelos de extensão contribuem para uma melhor estruturação dos conceitos em tesauros. Os modelos de extensão são apropriados para a representação dos relacionamentos de equivalência compostos, ou para a estruturação de grupos e subgrupos de conceitos em tesauros.

    Abstract
    Der Aufbau der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek wurde im Herbst 2007 auf soliden Grund gestellt: Mit der European Digital Library Foundation steht eine geschäftsfähige Organisation als Trägerin der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek zur Verfügung. Sie fungiert zunächst als Steuerungsgremium für das EU-finanzierte Projekt EDLnet und übernimmt sukzessive die Aufgaben, die für den Aufbau und die Weiterentwicklung der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek notwendig sind. Die Gründungsmitglieder sind zehn europäische Dachorganisationen aus den Bereichen Bibliothek, Archiv, audiovisuelle Sammlungen und Museen. Vorstandsmitglieder sind die Vorsitzende Elisabeth Niggemann (CENL) die Vize-Vorsitzende Martine de Boisdeffre (EURBICA), der Schatzmeister Edwin van Huis (FIAT) sowie Wim van Drimmelen, der Generaldirektor der Koninklijke Bibliotheek, der Nationalbibliothek der Niederlande, welche die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek hostet. Der Prototyp für die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek wird im Rahmen des EDLnet-Projekts entwickelt. Die erste Version des Prototyps wurde auf der internationalen Konferenz »One more step towards the European Digital Library« vorgestellt, die am 31. Januar und 1. Februar 2008 in der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (DNB) in Frankfurt am Main stattfand. Die endgültige Version des Prototyps wird im November 2008 von der EU-Kommissarin für Informationsgesellschaft und Medien, Viviane Reding, in Paris vorgestellt werden. Dieser Prototyp wird direkten Zugang zu mindestens zwei Mio. digitalisierten Büchern, Fotografien, Karten, Tonaufzeichnungen, Filmaufnahmen und Archivalien aus Bibliotheken, Archiven, audiovisuellen Sammlungen und Museen Europas bieten.

    Darin u.a. "Interoperabilität als Kernstück - Technische und semantische Interoperabilität bilden somit das Kernstück für das Funktionieren der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek. Doch bevor Wege gefunden werden können, wie etwas funktionieren kann, muss zunächst einmal festgelegt werden, was funktionieren soll. Hierfür sind die Nutzeranforderungen das Maß aller Dinge, weshalb sich ein ganzes Arbeitspaket in EDLnet mit der Nutzersicht, den Nutzeranforderungen und der Nutzbarkeit der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek befasst, Anforderungen formuliert und diese im Arbeitspaket »Interoperabilität« umgesetzt werden. Für die Entscheidung, welche Inhalte wie präsentiert werden, sind jedoch nicht allein technische und semantische Fragestellungen zu klären, sondern auch ein Geschäftsmodell zu entwickeln, das festlegt, was die beteiligten Institutionen und Organisationen in welcher Form zu welchen Bedingungen zur Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek beitragen. Auch das Geschäftsmodell wird Auswirkungen auf technische und semantische Interoperabilität haben und liefert die daraus abgeleiteten Anforderungen zur Umsetzung an das entsprechende Arbeitspaket. Im EDLnet-Projekt ist somit ein ständiger Arbeitskreislauf installiert, in welchem die Anforderungen an die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek formuliert, an das Interoperabilitäts-Arbeitspaket weitergegeben und dort umgesetzt werden. Diese Lösung wird wiederum an die Arbeitspakete »Nutzersicht« und »Geschäftsmodell« zurückgemeldet, getestet, kommentiert und für die Kommentare wiederum technische Lösungen gesucht. Dies ist eine Form des »rapid prototyping«, das hier zur Anwendung kommt, d. h. die Funktionalitäten werden schrittweise gemäß des Feedbacks der zukünftigen Nutzer sowie der Projektpartner erweitert und gleichzeitig wird der Prototyp stets lauffähig gehalten und bis zur Produktreife weiterentwickelt. Hierdurch verspricht man sich ein schnelles Ergebnis bei geringem Risiko einer Fehlentwicklung durch das ständige Feedback."

    Abstract
    Within the multilingual framework of the CrissCross project, MACS (Multilingual Access to Subjects) has continued its work. MACS has developed a prototype of mappings between three vocabularies: the LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), RAMEAU (Répertoire d'autorité-matière encyclopédique et alphabétique unifié) and the SWD (Schlagwortnormdatei). A database with a Link Management System (LMI), which allows for an easy linking between English, French and German subject headings, was created. The database started working with headings from the disciplines sports and theatre, but by now headings from all other fields of knowledge have been included as well. In 2008-2010, equivalencies between English and French headings which had been produced by the Bibliothèque nationale de France have been completed with the most important German SWD topical terms. Thus, more than 50.000 trilingual links are now available and can be used in different retrieval scenarios. It is planned to use them in The European Library (TEL) in order to support multilingual searches over all European National Library collections. The article informs about the project workflow, methodology of mapping and future applications of MACS links.

    Abstract
    KoT (Kinds of Tags) is an ongoing joint collaborative research effort with many participants worldwide, including the University of Minho, UKOLN, the University of Bologna, the Université Libre de Bruxelles and La Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. It is focused on the analysis of tags that are in common use in the practice of social tagging, with the aim of discovering how easily tags can be 'normalised' for interoperability with standard metadata environments such as the DC Metadata Terms.

    Classification and Indexing Section (Sektion Klassifikation und Indexierung) Deutsches Mitglied im Ständigen Ausschuss der Sektion: Yvonne Jahns (2005-2009; Deutsche Nationalbibliothek) Die Sektion, die sich als Forum für den internationalen Austausch über Methoden der Inhaltserschließung und die Bedeutung des sachlichen Zugangs zu Dokumenten und Wissen versteht, wartete in Quebec mit einem interessanten Vortragprogramm auf. Drei Präsentationen näherten sich dem Thema "Classification and indexing without language borders" von unterschiedlichen Seiten. Anila Angjeli von der Bibliotheque nationale de France (BnF) präsentierte Arbeiten aus dem Projekt STITCH", das sich mit semantischen Suchen in unterschiedlich erschlossenen Beständen von Kulturerbeinstitutionen beschäftigt. Die verwendeten Thesauri und Klassifikationen wurden mittels SKOS in ein vergleichbares Format überführt und stehen so als Semantic-Web-Anwendung zur Recherche bereit. Die Funktionsweise erläuterte Anila Angjeli sehr bildreich durch Beispiel-suchen nach mittelalterlichen Handschriften der BnF und der Königlichen Bibliothek der Niederlande. Vivien Petras vom GESIS Informationszentrum Sozialwissenschaften, Bonn, sprach über die Vielzahl der intellektuell erstellten Crosskonkordanzen zwischen Thesauri in den Sozialwissenschaften. Sie stellte dabei die Evaluierung der KOMOHE-Projektergebnisse vor und konnte die Verbesserung der Suchergebnisse anschaulich machen, die man durch Hinzuziehen der Konkordanzen in der Recherche über heterogen erschlossene Bestände erreicht. Schließlich präsentierte Michael Kreyche von der Kent State University, Ohio/USA, seinen eindrucksvollen jahrelangen Einsatz für die Zugänglichkeit englisch-spanischer Schlagwörter. Im Projekt Icsh-es.org gelang es, viele Vorarbeiten von amerikanischen und spanischen Bibliotheken zusammenzutragen, um eine Datenbank spanischer Entsprechungen der Library of Congress Subject Headings aufzubauen. Diese soll Indexierern helfen und natürlich den vielen spanisch-sprachigen Bibliotheksbenutzern in den USA zugute kommen. Spanisch ist nicht nur eine der meistgesprochenen Sprachen der Welt, sondern aufgrund der zahlreichen Einwanderer in die USA für die Bibliotheksarbeit von großer Wichtigkeit.
    Am Rande des Weltkongresses fanden zum wiederholten Male DDC- und UDC-Anwendertreffen statt. Für alle an der DDC Interessierten ist das Programm im Dewey-Blog vom 19. August 2008 zu finden. Besonders interessant ist der neue OCLC-Service namens "Classify", der als Webservice aufgesetzt werden soll und dem Anwender aus WorldCat-Daten zuverlässige Notationen herausfiltert - eine gute Hilfe beim Klassifizieren (zur Fremddatenübernahme) und beim Orientieren in einer internationalen DDC-Umgebung. Hingewiesen sei noch auf die anlässlich des Kongresses frei geschaltete Suchoberfläche der ortsansässigen Bibliotheque de l'Universite Lava Ariane 2.0 ist eine intuitive und einfach zu bedienende Katalogsuchmaschine, die insbesondere die Schlagwörter des Repertoire de vedettes-matiere (RVM) zur Navigation benutzt. RVM ist die französischsprachige Schlagwortnormdatei Kanadas, in enger Anlehnung an die LCSH entstanden und heute in enger Kooperation zu den Rameau der BnF gepflegt und von Library and Archives Canada als der französische Indexierungsstandard Kanadas betrachtet. Für die Pflege ist die Laval-Universitätsbibliothek verantwortlich. Eben erschien der neue "Guide pratique du RVM" - ein schwergewichtiger Führer durch die Schlagwortwelt und ein kleines Indexierungsregelwerk.

    Abstract
    Am 29. und 30. Oktober 2009 fand in der Königlichen Bibliothek in Den Haag das zweite internationale UDC-Seminar zum Thema "Classification at a Crossroad" statt. Organisiert wurde diese Konferenz - wie auch die erste Konferenz dieser Art im Jahr 2007 - vom UDC-Konsortium (UDCC). Im Mittelpunkt der diesjährigen Veranstaltung stand die Erschließung des World Wide Web unter besserer Nutzung von Klassifikationen (im Besonderen natürlich der UDC), einschließlich benutzerfreundlicher Repräsentationen von Informationen und Wissen. Standards, neue Technologien und Dienste, semantische Suche und der multilinguale Zugriff spielten ebenfalls eine Rolle. 135 Teilnehmer aus 35 Ländern waren dazu nach Den Haag gekommen. Das Programm umfasste mit 22 Vorträgen aus 14 verschiedenen Ländern eine breite Palette, wobei Großbritannien mit fünf Beiträgen am stärksten vertreten war. Die Tagesschwerpunkte wurden an beiden Konferenztagen durch die Eröffnungsvorträge gesetzt, die dann in insgesamt sechs thematischen Sitzungen weiter vertieft wurden.

    Abstract
    In this paper the following problem is discussed: Which possibilities exist to integrate localized knowledge into knowledge structures like classification systems or other documentary languages for the design of OPACs and information systems? It is proposed to combine a de-localized classificatory structure - best describes as 'ontological spine' - with multilingual semantic networks. Each of these networks should represent the respective localized knowledge along an extended set of typed semantic relations serving as entry points vocabulary as well as a semantic basis for navigational purposes within the localized knowledge context. The spine should enable a link between well-known and not well-known knowledge structures.

    Abstract
    The Web has become the world's largest database, with search being the main tool that allows organizations and individuals to exploit its huge amount of information. Search on the Web has been traditionally based on textual and structural similarities, ignoring to a large degree the semantic dimension, i.e., understanding the meaning of the query and of the document content. Combining search and semantics gives birth to the idea of semantic search. Traditional search engines have already advertised some semantic dimensions. Some of them, for instance, can enhance their generated result sets with documents that are semantically related to the query terms even though they may not include these terms. Nevertheless, the exploitation of the semantic search has not yet reached its full potential. In this book, Roberto De Virgilio, Francesco Guerra and Yannis Velegrakis present an extensive overview of the work done in Semantic Search and other related areas. They explore different technologies and solutions in depth, making their collection a valuable and stimulating reading for both academic and industrial researchers. The book is divided into three parts. The first introduces the readers to the basic notions of the Web of Data. It describes the different kinds of data that exist, their topology, and their storing and indexing techniques. The second part is dedicated to Web Search. It presents different types of search, like the exploratory or the path-oriented, alongside methods for their efficient and effective implementation. Other related topics included in this part are the use of uncertainty in query answering, the exploitation of ontologies, and the use of semantics in mashup design and operation. The focus of the third part is on linked data, and more specifically, on applying ideas originating in recommender systems on linked data management, and on techniques for the efficiently querying answering on linked data.

    Abstract
    When we speak about finding relationships between resources, it is necessary to dive deeper in the structure. The graph structure of linked data where the semantics give meaning to the relationships between resources enable the execution of pathfinding algorithms. The assigned weights and heuristics are base components of such algorithms and ultimately define (the order) which resources are included in a path. These paths explain indirect connections between resources. Our third technique proposes an algorithm that optimizes the choice of resources in terms of serendipity. Some optimizations guard the consistence of candidate-paths where the coherence of consecutive connections is maximized to avoid trivial and too arbitrary paths. The implementation uses the A* algorithm, the de-facto reference when it comes to heuristically optimized minimal cost paths. The effectiveness of paths was measured based on common automatic metrics and surveys where the users could indicate their preference for paths, generated each time in a different way. Finally, all our techniques are applied to a use case about publications in digital libraries where they are aligned with information about scientific conferences and researchers. The application to this use case is a practical example because the different aspects of exploratory search come together. In fact, the techniques also evolved from the experiences when implementing the use case. Practical details about the semantic model are explained and the implementation of the search system is clarified module by module. The evaluation positions the result, a prototype of a tool to explore scientific publications, researchers and conferences next to some important alternatives.
