    Abstract
After a short presentation of major background principles used in BSO construction, the authors consider the most important structural peculiarities and spheres of application of this system. Some specific remarks deal with subdivisions within several major headings. In general, the BSO is viewed as a reasonable and up-to-date structural outline of modern knowledge and a useful tool to interconnect or switch between information systems

    Abstract
In 2003, OCLC published Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 22 (DDC 22), in print and Web versions. The changes and updates in the new edition reflect a modern view of knowledge structures and address the general needs of Dewey users. The content of DDC 22 has been shaped by a number of social, geopolitical, and technical trends. The World Wide Web has provided a vehicle for more frequent distribution of updates to the DDC, and a medium for direct communication with Dewey users around the world. In addition to updating the system itself, other strategies are needed to accommodate the needs of the global Dewey user community. Translation of the system is one approach; another is mapping. Mapping terminology to the DDC is a strategy for supporting effective local implementation of the system while maintaining the internal cohesiveness of the DDC. This paper explores the usefulness of mapping terminology from English-language general subject headings lists produced outside the U.S.

    Abstract
Argues that Beghtol's (2003) use of the terms "naive classification" and "professional classification" is valid because they are nominal definitions and that the distinction between these two types of classification points up the need for researchers in knowledge organization to broaden their scope beyond traditional classification systems intended for information retrieval. Argues that work by Beghtol (2003), Kwasnik (1999) and Bailey (1994) offer direction for the development of a classification of classifications based on the pragmatic dimensions of extant classification systems. Abstract
The paper analyses the importance of data presentation and modelling and its role in improving the management, use and exchange of analytico-synthetic classifications in automated systems. Inefficiencies, in this respect, hinder the automation of classification systems that offer the possibility of building compound index/search terms. The lack of machine readable data expressing the semantics and structure of a classification vocabulary has negative effects on information management and retrieval, thus restricting the potential of both automated systems and classifications themselves. The authors analysed the data representation structure of three general analytico-synthetic classification systems (BC2-Bliss Bibliographic Classification; BSO-Broad System of Ordering; UDC-Universal Decimal Classification) and put forward some core requirements for classification data representation

    Abstract
Several authors remark that categories used in languages, including indexing ones, are affected by cultural biases, and do not reflect reality in an objective way. Hence knowledge organization would essentially be determined by pragmatic factors. However, human categories are connected with the structure of reality through biological bonds, and this allows for a naturalistic approach too. Naturalism has been adopted by Farradane in proposing relational categories, and by Dahlberg and the CRG in applying the theory of integrative levels to general classification schemes. The latter is especially relevant for possible developments in making the structure of schemes independent from disciplines, and in applying it to digital information retrieval.

    Abstract
Cultural literacy is defined as the social role of information within, between and across cultures. The term cultural literacy is both oral and chirographic, maintaining cultural identity within a discourse community. A discourse community must have a common vocabulary. One measure of an evolving discourse community is the gradual development of a common vocabulary. Taxonomy, the knowledge organization tool that can be used to demonstrate relationships among terms in a common vocabulary, is an appropriate approach at this time in the discourse community of cultural literacy. Ordering the taxonomy into an ontology can demonstrate another measure of uniformity or order (or lack of it) in the discourse community. The methodology involves discovering key documents that define the discourse community. The research reported in this paper has three objectives: (1) to create a taxonomy using two documents written by noted authors within the field of cultural literacy; (2) to determine whether common vocabulary contains matching words or terms; and if possible, (3) to classify these terms. The importance of this exploratory study is two-fold. First, examination of the taxonomy created by two noted authors in the field might establish a measure of uniformity within the discourse community. Second, the results will determine whether further research is warranted.
