- Abstract
- Max Weber hat den Begriff der »Rationalität« eingeführt, um die Form der kapitalistischen Wirtschaftstätigkeit, des bürgerlichen Privatrechtsverkehrs und der bürokratischen Herrschaft zu bestimmen. Rationalisierung meint zunächst die Ausdehnung der gesellschaftlichen Bereiche, die Maßstäben rationaler Entscheidung unterworfen werden. Dem entspricht die Industrialisierung der gesellschaftlichen Arbeit mit der Folge, daß Maßstäbe instrumentalen Handelns auch in andere Lebensbereiche eindringen (Urbanisierung der Lebensweise, Technisierung des Verkehrs und der Kommunikation). In beiden Fällen handelt es sich um die Durchsetzung des Typus zweckrationalen Handelns: hier bezieht er sich auf die Organisation von Mitteln, dort auf die Wahl zwischen Alternativen. Die Planung schließlich kann als ein zweckrationales Handeln zweiter Stufe aufgefaßt werden: sie zielt auf die Einrichtung, Verbesserung oder Erweiterung der Systeme zweckrationalen Handelns selber. Die fortschreitende »Rationalisierung « der Gesellschaft hängt mit der Institutionalisierung des wissenschaftlichen und des technischen Fortschritts zusammen. In dem Maße, in dem Technik und Wissenschaft die institutionellen Bereiche der Gesellschaft durchdringen und dadurch die Institutionen selbst verwandeln, werden die alten Legitimationen abgebaut. Säkularisierung und »Entzauberung « der handlungsorientierenden Weltbilder, der kulturellen Überlieferung insgesamt, ist die Kehrseite einer wachsenden »Rationalität« des gesellschaftlichen Handelns.

- Abstract
- Dieses Papier diskutiert die allgemeinen Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der Wissenskommunikation. Bereits die Betrachtung der informations- und wissensorganisatorischen Techniken lassen einige Folgerungen für den künftig zu erwartenden Wissensaustausch und seine Formalisierung ziehen. Auch wurden künftige Aspekte der Wissensorganisation und -kommunikation im Rahmen von Panels bei der Deutschen ISKO-Konferenz 2006 in Wien und in 2007 auf der IKONE-Konferenz in Bangalore sowie bei der WissKom 2007 in Jülich diskutiert. Hieraus und aus Betrachtungen zu den neuen medialen Techniken werden Folgerungen für zu erwartende und zu empfehlende künftige Entwicklungen gezogen.

- Abstract
- Wissenschaftskommunikation ist ein vielschichtiger Prozess. Im vorliegenden BuB-Schwerpunkt wird er aus ganz unterschiedlichen Perspektiven beleuchtet. Zunächst versucht Olaf Eigenbrodt eine historische Verortung und stellt dabei den Aspekt der Vermittlung von wissenschaftlicher Arbeit und ihrer Ergebnisse an eine breite Öffentlichkeit in den Vordergrund. Die beiden folgenden Autoren konzentrieren sich dagegen auf die Kommunikation innerhalb der Wissenschaft beziehungsweise zwischen verschiedenen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen: Anja Beddies beschreibt, wie die geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung zunehmend die Potenziale des Internet nutzt; Gerwin Kasperek erläutert die aktuellen literaturbezogenen Arbeitsweisen von Naturwissenschaftlern am Beispiel der Biologie -jeweils mit Fokus auf Funktion und Aufgaben, die Bibliotheken in diesem Zusammenhang erfüllen. Im Anschluss diskutiert Lambert Heller die Chancen und Möglichkeiten die Bibliotheken aus der verstärkten Wissenschaftskommunikation im Internet erwachsen. Schließlich präsentieren Antje Michel und Ralf Schimmer die virtuelle Hybridbibliothek der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft als ein herausragendes Beispiel für die Literatur- und Informationsversorgung in der Spitzenforschung.

- Im Gesamtrahmen wissenschaftlicher Kommunikationsprozesse nimmt die Literatur eine besondere Stellung ein - was die Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaftlern angeht, aber auch, was die Nutzbarmachung wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse für die Gesellschaft angeht. Das Arbeiten mit Literatur (einschließlich Suchen, Beschaffen, Lesen, Auswerten und Schreiben) ist für den Wissenschaftler alltäglich, und es beansprucht einen wesentlichen Teil seiner Arbeitszeit. Genauere Kenntnisse dieser Tätigkeiten können eine wichtige Grundlage für die Gestaltung des Angebots von Bibliotheken und anderen Informationseinrichtungen darstellen. Aber: »The actual process of utilizing scientific literature is one of the less well understood phases of scientific communication.« - Diese Feststellung bezog Krishna Subramanyam in seinem enzyklopädischen Beitrag über die naturwissenschaftliche Literatur auf die vielfältigen Tätigkeiten des Naturwissenschaftlers im Hinblick auf Suche, Beschaffung und Verwendung der fachlich relevanten Literatur. Seitdem ist manches intensiver untersucht worden, gerade was die Rolle von Bibliotheken angeht. Aber unsere Kenntnisse des Gesamtprozesses sind nach wie vor lückenhaft, wie im vorliegenden Beitrag am Beispiel der Biologie gezeigt werden soll.

- Abstract
- Im ersten Teil in Ausgabe Nr. 2, 2003, 5. 107 ff, ging es im Wesentlichen um die Grundlagen von Informations- und Kommunikationsprozessen. Dabei stand die zeichenbasierte Information und Kommunikation im Mittelpunkt. In diesem Beitrag soll herausgearbeitet werden, warum gerade ab der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts Information einen immer größeren Stellenwert in Wirtschaft, Politik, Gesellschaft und Kultur erhielt und später gar zu einem epochalen Begriff "Informationsgesellschaft" avancierte. Darüber hinaus sollen die charakteristischen Merkmale einer Informations- und Wissensgesellschaft umrissen werden.
