    Abstract
    "Es gibt eine Reihe von Philosophen (zu der auch ich selbst gehöre), die ihr Bestes tut, um die herkömmlichen Unterscheidungen zwischen Objektivem und Subjektivem, Vernunft und Leidenschaft, Erkenntnis und Meinung, Wissenschaft und Politik zu komplizieren. Wir bieten strittige Umdeutungen dieser Unterscheidungen und formulieren sie in einer Art und Weise, die von der Tradition abweicht. So bestreiten wir zum Beispiel, daß die Suche nach objektiver Wahrheit eine Suche nach Realitätsentsprechung sei, und treten dafür ein, sie solle statt dessen als Suche nach möglichst umfassendem intersubjektivem Einvernehmen aufgefaßt werden. Daher wird uns oft der Vorwurf gemacht, wir brächten die Überlieferungen und Praktiken in Gefahr, die den Menschen vorschweben, wenn von »akademischer Freiheit«, »wissenschaftlicher Integrität« oder »Standards der Forschung« die Rede ist. Dieser Ansicht ist auch mein bekannter Fachkollege John Searle. In einem kürzlich erschienenen Artikel beschreibt Searle den überlieferten Vernunftgedanken des Abendlands, den er mit einem Schlagwort als »Westliche Rationalistische Tradition« bezeichnet. Diese Tradition, meint er, sei von philosophischer Seite unter Beschuß geraten, und dieser Angriff werde unter anderem von Thomas Kuhn, Jacques Derrida und mir selbst geführt. Desweiteren behauptet Searle, die gravierendste Einzelfolge der Ablehnung der Westlichen Rationalistischen Tradition bestehe darin, »daß sie dieMöglichkeit schafft, herkömmliche Maßstäbe derObjektivität, derWahrheit und der Rationalität preiszugeben, und einem Bildungsprogramm Tür und Tor öffnet, zu dessen vorrangigen Zwecksetzungen die Herbeiführung gesellschaftlicher und politischer Umgestaltungen gehört«.
    Searle verzeichnet eine ganze Reihe philosophischer Thesen, die nach seiner Anschauung maßgeblich sind für die Westliche Rationalistische Tradition, doch ich werde hier nur auf zwei eingehen, nämlich die These, wonach sich die Erkenntnis, um mit Searle zu reden, im Regelfall auf eine bewußtseinsunabhängige Wirklichkeit bezieht, sowie die These, wonach die Erkenntnis durch Sätze zum Ausdruck gebracht wird, »die deshalb wahr sind, weil sie diese Realität genau wiedergeben«. Ich bin mit keiner dieser beiden Thesen einverstanden, sondern vertrete ebenso wie Kuhn die Meinung, daß wir Behauptungen, denen zufolge »sukzessive wissenschaftliche Überzeugungen immer wahrscheinlicher werden oder der Wahrheit in immer besserer Weise näherkommen, jeglichen Sinn absprechen und zugleich darauf hinweisen sollten, daß keine Beziehung zwischen Überzeugungen und einer vermeintlich bewußtseinsunabhängigen oder >äußeren< Welt der Gegenstand von Wahrheitsansprüchen sein kann«."

    Abstract
    Verglichen mit ihrer mehr als zweieinhalbtausendjährigen Geschichte handelt es sich bei der Wissenschaftstheorie um eine sehr junge Disziplin der Philosophie. Von einer Etablierug als eigenständiger Disziplin kann erst seit den dreißiger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts gesprochen werden. Verständlich wird die Entwicklung dieser neuen Disziplin aber nur, wenn man sieht, daß sie auf eine grundlegende Krise der Philosophie antwortet, nämlich auf das Scheitern des Projekts abendländischer Metaphysik, und gleichzeitig den Versuch darstellt, einen undogmatischen Begriff von Wissenschaft bereitzustellen durch eine Reflexion der Bedingungen, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen gesicherten Wissens
