Die vielen seltsam anmutenden Beispiele stammen keineswegs nur aus seinem persönlichen Umfeld, sondern lassen sich in allen Firmen wiederfinden, die sich einer modernen Unternehmenskultur verpflichtet haben, also insbesondere in der Welt der so genannten Global Player. Dem Autor geht es jedoch nicht vorrangig um das Erzählen von Geschichten, sondern darum, die Ursachen dieser teilweise skurrilen Begebenheiten aufzudecken. Dabei greift er weit in die Menschheitsgeschichte zurück: Sein Ausgangspunkt ist der Übergang von einer sporadisch aktiven Jägerkultur zu einer der Effizienz verpflichteten Bauernkultur, oder eben die Ablösung des Intuitiven und Sporadischen durch Logik und Ordnung. Mit diesem Wandel ist eine Änderung der in der Gesellschaft dominanten psychologischen Präferenzen verbunden. Wie schon in dem Vorgängerbuch "Wild Duck" (besprochen in Spektrum der Wissenschaft 11/2000, S. 101) teilt Dueck die Menschen in Typen ein: diesmal in den ordnungswahrenden Citizen, den anpackenden Go West, den dem Tiefgründigen verbundenen Star Trek und den sinnsuchenden Blue Helmet. Dueck beschreibt, wie das vorherrschende Bauerndenken im Bemühen, die vorhandenen Strukturen immer effizienter zu gestalten, in eine Sackgasse gerät. Vorangetrieben wird diese Entwicklung von den alles durchdenkenden Citizens, die sich als eine Art Superbauern entpuppen. Dieses Denken durchdringt inzwischen alle Bereiche unseres Lebens, von der Schule, wo wir immer ordentlich unsere Hausaufgaben machen sollen, bis ins Berufsleben, in dem die Tugenden der Superbauern als idealer Karriereweg gelten. Abweichungen gelten beinahe schon als krankhaft. Den Nicht-Bauern werden in Randbereichen misstrauisch beäugte Reservate eingeräumt: für Künstler, Lehrer oder Altenpfleger. Sie alle scheinen dem Anspruch der Effizienz nicht zu genügen.
    In der heutigen Wirtschaft hat die Bauernkultur ihre eigentliche Heimstatt gefunden, gekrönt von der Idee des Share-holder-Value. Diese verurteilt die Unternehmen geradewegs dazu, immer effizienter zu werden und unaufhörlich positiv in die Zukunft zu blicken. Ein Zurückweichen darf es nicht geben, wir kennen keine Probleme mehr, sondern nur noch Herausforderungen. Es zählt lediglich der messbare Erfolg. Dueck beschreibt, wie dieses Denken zum Verlust all dessen führt, was über das Messen hinausgeht: Zufriedenheit, Innovation, Kreativität. All dies ist in erster Linie nur fühlbar und stört im Zweifelsfall den reibungslosen Ablauf der Maschinerie. Plötzlich erscheinen aber Akteure, die sich dem Diktat des Messbaren entziehen, aber gerade darum erfolgreich sind. Vorreiter dieser Bewegung ist der "E-Man", der intuitiv, risikobereit und abruptem Wandel aufgeschlossen der Bauernwirtschaft trotzt. Diese antwortet gemäß ihrer bewährten Logik, indem sie versucht, noch effizienter zu arbeiten, nach der Devise "Nun seien Sie doch mal kreativ". In ihrem Hang zum Tugendexzess verliert sie jedoch die Frage nach dem Sinn des Ganzen aus den Augen. Ob die Entstehung der E-Welt einer globalen Kommunikation und Interaktion diese Entwicklung ausgelöst oder nur beschleunigt hat, mag zweitrangig erscheinen. Dueck sieht, dass der E-Man ein Überdenken der bestehenden Tendenzen nötig macht. Er plädiert für eine Balance der Charaktere, in der sowohl Jäger als auch Bauern ihren Platz finden. Wenn jedoch unser Denken in der Optimierungslogik verhaftet bleibt, wenn wir also das Jägerartige nur akzeptieren, weil es in einem gewissen, nicht messbaren Sinn "optimaler" ist, finden wir uns unversehens auf dem Tugendpfad der Effizienzsteigerung wieder. Wichtig ist es, mit dem Überdenken der Strukturen zu beginnen, auch wenn der Appell zur Umkehr noch keinen Weg aus der Sackgasse weist. Gunter Dueck hat in dieser Hinsicht mit seiner packend geschriebenen Problemanalyse auf jeden Fall einen ermutigenden Schritt in die richtige Richtung getan."
