- Abstract
- Das Buch beginnt mit dem "Theoretischer Hintergrund" und schafft beim Leser ein Wissensfundament für die weiteren Überlegungen. Mit Kapiteln über Tradition, über Verstehen und Sein hin zu einer neuen Orientierung werden dem Leser bekannte Begriffe und Erkenntnisse im Bezug auf den Computer in einem anderen, neuen Blickwinkel dargestellt. Die daran anschließenden Kapitel bauen auf diesem Wissen auf und untersuchen bereits eingeschlagene Entwicklungswege die heutigen Computer, aber auch nach neuen Möglichkeiten diese Technik sinnvoll in den Dienst der Menschheit zu stellen. Die Kernthemen Intelligenz und Sprache verstehen werden zu einem Strudel, einem Sog um den sich alle weiteren Gedanken drehen. Gerade das Verstehen, im Sinne von bewusstem, ja ich weis was mit dieser Aussage gemeint ist, wird sehr intensiv analysiert. Ein weiterer wichtiger Untersuchungspunkt ist der wissenschaftlich korrekte Blick in Form von Entscheidungsfindungen auf den zahlreichen Gebieten. Enden die Möglichkeiten der Computer bei der Entscheidungsunterstützung oder kann sie darüber hinaus bis zur Entscheidungsfindung gehen? Welche Qualität haben solch entscheidende Systeme auf die weitere Entwicklung der Menschheit? Die Sprache als Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Computer ist ein weiterer Untersuchunsgegenstand. Sprache schafft Verständigungsebenen. Die unterschiedliche Auffassungsgabe zwischen Mensch und Maschine ist eine Sollbruchstelle, die für Zusammenbrüche verantwortlich ist. Ein Weg aus dieser Sackgasse ist die Gestaltung. Die Bereitstellung von Werkzeugen gestaltet dann neue Konversationsformen und Gesprächsebenen. Die Autoren haben dieses Buch gegen Ende der achtziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts geschrieben. Die erarbeiteten Ergebnisse snd aber nach wie vor von bestechender Klarheit und Wahrheit. Sicherlich hat die Computerwelt seitdem einige zusätzliche neue Wege und Möglichkeiten entdeckt. Einige der von den Autoren vorgeschlagenen Zukunftswege gelten inzwischen als bekannte Routinen. Doch der Kern der Probleme mit dieser neuen Maschinenwelt ist nach wie vor Bestandteil der Forschung. Den Autoren ist ein zeitloses wissenschaftliches Buch gelungen. Der wissbegierige Leser ist gut beraten auch dieses ältere Werk hinzuzuziehen, wenn es sich diesem Thema nähern möchte.

- Abstract
- Dieses Buch ist Science-fiction ohne "Fiction". Es ist irrsinniger als irgendetwas, was man jemals in Star Trek gesehen hat. Hans Moravec, Professor für Robotik an der Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, stellt sich eine nicht allzu ferne Zukunft vor, in der Roboter mit übermenschlicher Intelligenz den evolutionären Stab ihrer menschlichen Erschaffer übernehmen und sich in den Weltraum aufmachen, um das Universum zu kolonisieren. Millionen von Science-fiction-Taschenbüchern haben diese Vision bereits zum Thema gehabt. Der Unterschied zu ihnen liegt jedoch in Moravecs praktisch durchdachtem Entwurf der technologischen, ökonomischen und sozialen Schritte, die zu dieser Vision führen könnten. Beginnend mit den bescheidenen Errungenschaften der gegenwärtigen Robotikforschung, entwirft er einen wahrscheinlichen Kurs für die nächsten vierzig Jahre der Roboterentwicklung und prophezeit den Aufstieg von superintelligenten, kreativen, emotional komplexen Computerwesen und damit das Ende der menschlichen Arbeit bis zur Mitte des nächsten Jahrhunderts. An dieser Stelle beginnen seine Visionen erst richtig kühn zu werden: Roboterverbände werden sich zusammen mit Banden von Cyborgs -- bionische Menschen -- im Weltraum ansiedeln; Roboter so groß wie Planeten werden auf der Suche nach kleineren Einheiten, die sie sich einverleiben können, durchs Sonnensystem fliegen; und letztendlich wird jedes Atom in der gesamten Galaxis zu einem Datenträger umgewandelt, mit einer Simulation der menschlichen Zivilisation in Originalgröße, die irgendwo als Unterprogramm läuft. Das letzte Kapitel, das das Neueste vom Neuesten in der avantgardistischen Physik mit Spuren von Borges' mitreißendsten metaphysischen Phantasien vermischt, ist ein atemberaubendes Stück halluzinatorische Eschatologie. Moravec schließt damit, daran zu erinnert, daß sogar die verrücktesten Langzeitprognosen über die technologische Zukunft letztendlich nie so verrückt sind, wie sie es hätten sein können.

DER SPIEGEL Das erklärte Ziel dieses Buches ist, den Standpunkt einiger KI-Enthusiasten zu widerlegen, daß Computer irgendwann all das können, was menschliche Gehirne können - und sogar mehr. Aber der Leser merkt bald, dass Pnerose vor allem das Ziel verfolgt, einen Wegzur großen Synthese von klassischer Physik, Quantenphysik und Neurowissenschaften aufzuzeigen. John Horgan in Scientific American Wer "Computerdenken" liest (oder durcharbeitet), sollte nicht auf Antwort hoffen, darf aber neue Sichtwiesen und überraschende Interpretationen erwarten. - Abstract
- Was ist Geist? Diese Frage kommt durch die Erkenntnisse der modernen Neurowissenschaften ihrer Beantwortung immer näher. Black entwickelt in diesem Buch ein neues molekulares Konzept des Geistes. Blacks molekulares Konzept des Geistes, das Umwelt, Gene, molekulare Symbole, Verhalten und mentale Prozesse in Beziehung zueinander setzt, wirft nicht nur neues Licht auf das uralte Leib-Seele- oder Körper-Geist-Problem; es trägt auch zu einem tiefern Verständnis darüber bei, wie das Gehirn Informationen verarbeitet, welche materielle Grundlage Denken und Gedächtnis haben und auf welchen biochemischen Veränderungen Hirnfunktionsstörungen wie Alzheimer-Krankheit, Parkinsonsche Erkrankung und Schizophrenie beruhen.
