Abstract

Neben Edward Sapir und Franz Boas gilt Benjamin Lee Whorf als bedeutendster amerikanischer Pionier auf dem Gebiet der Linguistik, Sprachphilosophie und Kulturanthropologie. Im Hauptberuf Chemiker, beschäftigte er sich schon früh mit der SChriftkunst der Azteken und Mayassowie mit der Sprache der Hopi-Indianer. Die mit dieser Neuausgabe wieder vorliegenden Abhandlungen zur 'Metalinguistik' analysieren nicht nur die Sprache selbst, sondern setzen sie in Beziehung zur übrigen Kultur der Gesellschaft. Whorfs tiefgreifende sprachphilosophische Reflexionen stehen dabei auf dem soliden Fundament eigener linguistischer Forschungsarbeit. Auch wenn das Wissen inzwischen vorangeschritten ist, so bleiben doch seine anschaulich geschriebenen und klar verständlichen Aufsätze von hohem Interesse für jeden, der sich einlesen will in die Zusammenhänge von Sprache, Denken und Wirklichkeit
