    Abstract
    There is much interest at present in electronic publishing and electronic libraries. The vast bulk of material in libraries today is not held in electronic format. For electronic libraries to flourish, methods of converting the existing corpus of material to electronic format must be found. This paper emphasises the problems that may be encountered in the digitisation process and pays attention to the intended use of the digitised material. There is a list of 5 areas, scanner resolution and design, grey scale and colour content of the original material and speed of scanning, for special consideration. The problems of indexing and copyright are considered briefly
