    Abstract
Metadata systems are concerned with the management of data which describes other data (datasets, catalogues, or actual database management systems) and are presently the subject of intensive research. Metadata systems can be used to store richly detailed forms of information, perform seamless wide ranging searches of information distributed across networks, and to integrate information stored in disparate repositories. Describes a model design and methods of implementation derived from the experience of the Leicester University Metadata Project. The approach utilizes the incorporation of semantic metadata in addition to resource metadata, resulting in a generally more powerful system than existing global directory services. Feature of the class of design is flexibility or implementation, with the ability to provide a coherent metadata system functioning above heterogeneous autonomous distributed databases

    Abstract
Reports the involvement of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL), and its responsibility both to preserve and to provide access to books and information in an increasingly electronic world. Describes the 2 European Commission programmes, managed by a Forum of 8 national libraries, to serve these ends: CoBRA (Computer and Bibliographic Record Actions), which established 4 task groups to study: improved European bibliographic services; user needs for bibliographic products; networked record distribution and reuse; and promotion of data sharing; and a new programme called CoBRA PLus to continue the work of CoBRA and widen its focus to include collection based services, with emphasis on resource sharing, user needs and the use of communication networks. Notes the 2 main task groups, concerned with: metadata and bibliographic access, and electronic publications and digital resources, including legal deposit and storage. Notes briefly the 8 specific projects ranging from networking name authority files to the development of a new relationship between publishers and national bibliographic agencies for the control of electronic publications

    Abstract
The MetaScholar Initiative is a collaborative endeavor to explore the feasibility and utility of scholarly portal services developed in conjunction with Open Archives Initiative (OAI) metadata harvesting technologies. The MetaScholar Initiative comprises two projects, the MetaArchive and AmericanSouth projects, both funded by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation totaling $600,000. These two projects have created two metadata aggregation networks connecting some 24 libraries, archives, museums, and electronic text centers. Each network has an associated portal being created under the guidance of teams composed of scholars, librarians, archivists, and technologists. The MetaScholar Initiative is studying issues such as metadata normalization, alternative forms of scholarly communication through portals, and the process of facilitating smaller archival institutions in providing better access to their collections through the OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). The MetaScholar Initiative is based at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

    Abstract
The complexity of cataloging manuscripts, particularly medieval manuscripts, has meant that these materials have remained largely inaccessible to the public. The quantity and quality of the descriptive data, the time and money it takes to catalog manuscripts, and the fragility of the materials themselves explain the dearth of searchable data on these valuable resources. Even when manuscripts have been cataloged, they have often been physically available only to a few elite scholars who are able to gain access to them. Certain institutions have embarked on projects to reverse this situation. This paper deals with three of these projects: the British Library's Digital Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts (DigCIM), a European consortium's database entitled Manuscripts And Letters Via Integrated Networks in Europe (MALVINE), and Columbia University's Digital Scriptorium (DS). The author explores the history of each project, compares the metadata utilized by each one through the creation of a crosswalk, and analyzes the usefulness of these catalogs to the user.
