    Abstract
    With the growth of hypertext and multimedia applications that support and encourage browsing it is time to take a penetrating look at browsing behaviour. Several dimensions of browsing are exemined, to find out: first, what is browsing and what cognitive processes are associated with it: second, is there a browsing strategy, and if so, are there any differences between how subject-area experts and novices browse; and finally, how can this knowledge be applied to improve the design of hypertext systems. Two groups of students, subject-area experts and novices, were studied while browsing a Macintosh HyperCard application on the subject The Vietnam War. A protocol analysis technique was used to gather and analyze data. Components of the GOMS model were used to describe the goals, operators, methods, and selection rules observed: Three browsing strategies were identified: (1) search-oriented browse, scanning and and reviewing information relevant to a fixed task; (2) review-browse, scanning and reviewing intersting information in the presence of transient browse goals that represent changing tasks, and (3) scan-browse, scanning for interesting information (without review). Most subjects primarily used review-browse interspersed with search-oriented browse. Within this strategy, comparisons between subject-area experts and novices revealed differences in tactics: experts browsed in more depth, seldom used referential links, selected different kinds of topics, and viewed information differently thatn did novices.     Abstract
    Considering the characteristics of hypertext systems and problems such as cognitive overload and the disorientation of users, this project studies subject hypertext documents that have undergone conceptual structuring using facets for content representation and improvement of information retrieval during navigation. The main objective was to assess the possibility of the application of topic map technology for automating the compatibilization process of these structures. For this purpose, two dissertations from the UFMG Information Science Post-Graduation Program were adopted as samples. Both dissertations had been duly analyzed and structured on the MHTX (Hypertextual Map) prototype database. The faceted structures of both dissertations, which had been represented in conceptual maps, were then converted into topic maps. It was then possible to use the merge property of the topic maps to promote the semantic interrelationship between the maps and, consequently, between the hypertextual information resources proper. The merge results were then analyzed in the light of theories dealing with the compatibilization of languages developed within the realm of information technology and librarianship from the 1960s on. The main goals accomplished were: (a) the detailed conceptualization of the merge process of the topic maps, considering the possible compatibilization levels and the applicability of this technology in the integration of faceted structures; and (b) the production of a detailed sequence of steps that may be used in the implementation of topic maps based on faceted structures.

    The subject of a recent MA thesis in library and information studies is the development of a prototype scholars workstation for presentation of materials, in a hypermedia format, from the Dickens House Museum Library, London. Type and number of materials is provided. Basic hypertext features and authoring attributes of the hypermedia software used, Guide 3.0 for Windows, are described and the time factors inherent in research, planning and development of such a project are emphasized.     Abstract
    Hypermedia systems are powerful tools for information storage and consultation. Little research effort has been directed towards making the presentation and navigation of hypermedia system more knowledge-based. This results in hypermedia systems which are difficult to use, since the gap which exists between the reader's mental model and the system's internal model of the subject information domain is to wode. Building such a knowledge-based or 3rd order hypermedia system requires the design of a conceptual architecture for hypermedia systems and the definition of an underlying data model which will allow for the explicit representation and manipulation of the semantics of the information. Formulates an approach towards such architecture, the Model - Map - View - Praxis architecture. This architecture introduces 2 concepts: nodes and links is represented and manipulated explicitly. Introduces a browsing mechanism, link navigation through message passing, which allows a hypermedia system to actively change the presentation look and traversal feel of its information contents

    Abstract
    A new computer-based writing environment is being developed which combines a hypertext 'ideas organizer' with a text editor. Compares 2 algortihms which could be used in such environments for turning networks of notes indicating ideas into linear draft documents. The algorithms are designed to produce a linear ordering of the notes which is acceptable to the writer as a first draft of the document. Reports on experiments to test their effectiveness. Subject were asked to create notes networks which were then linearized by the 2 algorithms. The resulting linearization created by hand, were assessed for textual organization. The experiments indicate that both algorithms produce linearizations which are acceptable as draft texts, that the best first algortihm is marginally superior to the hill climbing one, and that providing information to the algorithms about link types had little effect on their effectiveness. Concludes by describing an implementation of the best first algorithm as part of the Writer's Assistant writing environment

    Abstract
    An important stage in the process of retrieval of objects from a hypertext database is the creation of a set of internodal links that are intended to represent the relationships existing between objetcs; an operation that is usually undertaken manually such as the allocation of subject index terms to documents. Reports results of a study in which several different sets of hypertext links were inserted, each by a different person, between the paragraphs of each of a number of full text documents. The similarity between the members of each pair of link sets was then evaluated. Results indicated that little similarity existed among the link sets, a finding comparable with those of studies of inter indexer consistency, which suggests that there is generally only a low level of agreemenet between the sets of index terms assigned to a document by indexers.     Abstract
    This paper describes part of a university research project which aims to construct a design method involving interactive multimedia products for knowledge acquisition. The purpose of the method is to design truly interactive multimedia products (Vidalenc, 1997), and thus to introduce a new form of writing. This is built up by adopting a constructivist paradigm that is based upon a systemic view and upon a network approach such as proposed by the sociology of translation (Callon, 1986). All our reflections are indeed based on the differentiation between two levels of information: an internal level and a sensitive level (Bouzidi and Vidalenc, 1997). However we have chosen a common model, the object oriented model, which allows us to represent the elements belonging to each level. In order to prove the validity of this proceeding, a prototype is under preparation. It is founded on the transposition of a course, which deals with telecommunications and networks, into a multimedia teaching tool. To be able to build up the prototype, taking into account the usual steps (writing the requirement schedule, choosing the necessary technology, modeling, design, implementation and evaluation), and after that, to be able to measure the conception method, a stage of analysis and assessment of the present course is necessary. The analysis of the course must allow us to identify the conditions of the knowledge transfer and provide components for the requirement schedule of the hypermedia product.
