    Abstract
Considers the question of providing subject access to readers in Australia whose first language is not English. Describes 2 methods of subject searching: descriptive cataloguing; and controlled subject access. Sets out the reasons why presenting multilingual subject access to online catalogue users would be difficult and discusses the value of classification schemes in facilitating multilingual controlled subject access. Describes the State Library of New South Wales multicultural service

    Abstract
This paper suggests that the cataloging community may be setting its goals too low in its approach to online subject access. Truly effective subject retrieval for online catalog users will not be possible until the Library of Congress gives a higher priority to consistency in the assignment of subject headings. In recognition of the intellectual complexity of LCSH, the paper proposes the appointment of subject specialists to monitor the assignment of subject headings at the Library of Congress.

    Abstract
Description of the online catalogue (OLCA) development abd the subject access potency (Controlled and free term indexing, classified approach, subject indication costs, Boolean searching). The subject access research needs are outlined as well as the measures to be taken towards putting the Delft University of Technology Library catalogues online (AUBID-SSX project, subjects access point file, quantitative evaluation) The importance of the use of controlled vocabulary is stressed. The incorporations of a concordance between subject headingsa nd the local library classification is described

    Abstract
A survey of catalogue use in 1993 at Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed considerable dissatisfaction with the online catalogue's subject search facilities. Of those who used subject searching 64% preferred subject headings against only 2% who chose classification schedules. Library users make little use of the existing facilities for assistance and leaflets which are available in the library. It has, therefore, been decided to provide a programme of instruction in library use and to move towards a unified system of subject access to the library's catalogue

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue devoted to a subject control in on-line catalogues. Examines whether a subject cataloguing code is, at this point in time, necessary or economically feasible, as well as questioning who will develop such a code and if experiences with AACR2 should make librarians fearful or hopeful about similar work with subject headings.

    Abstract
The chapter deals with methods of subject cataloguing, subject analysis and representation of library materials and outlines the practice of subject searching in library catalogs after the introduction of online catalogs. The vocabulary control methods in the Library of Congress Classification and LCSH are described and strategies for the use of theses systems in online retrieval situations are outlined

    Abstract
Description of an attempt to improve OPAC subject access at Kobe University Library using Nippon Decimal Classification, 8th ed. (NDC8). Examines the theoretical aspects of using a classification for subject searching, then explains the Kobe system. Using the NDC8 machine-readable data file, a database was created for the OPAC, incorporating class numbers and subject headings. Difficulties arise from subdivisions and the structure of NDC8 itself, but it is an important area for development

    Abstract
Subject access to bibliographic data supported by knowledge organization systems, such as subject headings and classification, plays an important role in ensuring the quality of library catalogues. It is generally acknowledged that users have a strong affinity to subject browsing and searching and are inclined tofollow meaningful links between resources. Research studies, however, show that library OPACs are not designed to support or make good use of subject indexes and their underlying semantic structure. A project entitled OPAC semantici was initiated in 2003 by a number of Italian subject specialists and the Italian "Research Group on Subject Indexing" (GRIS) with a goal to analyse and evaluate subject access in Italian library catalogues through a survey of 150 OPACs. Applying the same methodology, a follow-up survey to assess whether any improvement had taken place was conducted five years later, in spring 2008. Analysis of these two surveys indicated that there was a slight improvement. The authors discuss the results of these two surveys, analyse the problems in subject searching in OPACs and explain the recommendations for subject searching enhancement put forward by GRIS. Using the example of Italian OPACs, the authors will attempt to outline some requirements for a subject searching interface and explain how this can be achieved through authority control.

    Abstract
Law libraries that introduce online catalogs to their publics often experience the same kinds of problems and benefits as other types of libraries. Nevertheless, certain issues for OPAC subject searching can be particularly challenging for law libraries. This paper addresses those issues, especially the impact on subject access of the design of shared OPACs and the special problems regarding subject searches on government agency names and titles of laws. Difficulties with law-related subject headings are also discussed. Finally, keyword and call number searching are examined from the law library perspective.

    Abstract
Finding books by subject in large libraries is a difficult task at the best of times. Since users seldom think of their topic in terms of library subject headings, they encounter problems in finding matches. Online catalogs have helped somewhat by allowing keyword searching and Boolean combinations. They have also perpetuated some problems (lack of authority control and of cross references) and created new ones, namely requiring users to acquire complex skills. Libraries need to look carefully at the MARC format and at enhanced and enriched subject approaches. Machine-generated links and leads can provide more paths and wider access to subject information.

    Abstract
This paper examines the need for increased subject catalog access to imaginative literature, focusing on the environment of the academic/research library. New trends in scholarship have created more need for such subject access. We can develop a basis for subject access to imaginative literature by examining the historical treatment of imaginative literature and by drawing upon the past and present work of librarians, other information professionals such as indexers, and literary scholars. While many information professionals have recognized a need for increased subject access to individual works of imagination, there has been no clear consensus on how to do this. This paper represents a step forward in that direction, showing how we might use LCSH to express the themes or topics of an imaginative work. It is important that such subject access be multi-dimensional, identifying both concrete and abstract levels of meaning. Using The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne as an example, it is demonstrated how LC-type subject headings using LC subject terms with genre/form subdivisions can be developed.
