    A subcommittee of the Subject Analysis Committee of the Cataloging and Classification Section, Resources and Technical Services Division of the ALA produced recommendations published in 'Guidelines on subject access to individual works of fiction, drama etc.' in 1990. Outlines 4 areas of subject analysis to be applied to fiction: form/genre, character, setting, and topic. Describes the implementation of these guidelines in the US environment and suggests some improvements

    Abstract
    The nature of a library's collections determines what kind of subject access to provide to those collections. The collections of the Cleveland Public Library serve both the recreational and research needs of a large urban population. The Cleveland Public Library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings to describe its collections. A study of subject searches entered by library patrons over the course of one week reveals several patterns among the types of subject headings used most frequently, reflecting the characteristics of the population served.     Abstract
    This paper examines the need for increased subject catalog access to imaginative literature, focusing on the environment of the academic/research library. New trends in scholarship have created more need for such subject access. We can develop a basis for subject access to imaginative literature by examining the historical treatment of imaginative literature and by drawing upon the past and present work of librarians, other information professionals such as indexers, and literary scholars. While many information professionals have recognized a need for increased subject access to individual works of imagination, there has been no clear consensus on how to do this. This paper represents a step forward in that direction, showing how we might use LCSH to express the themes or topics of an imaginative work. It is important that such subject access be multi-dimensional, identifying both concrete and abstract levels of meaning. Using The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne as an example, it is demonstrated how LC-type subject headings using LC subject terms with genre/form subdivisions can be developed.

    Abstract
    This article describes multiple experiments in text mining at Northern Illinois University that were undertaken to improve the efficiency and accuracy of cataloging. It focuses narrowly on subject analysis of dime novels, a format of inexpensive fiction that was popular in the United States between 1860 and 1915. NIU holds more than 55,000 dime novels in its collections, which it is in the process of comprehensively digitizing. Classification, keyword extraction, named-entity recognition, clustering, and topic modeling are discussed as means of assigning subject headings to improve their discoverability by researchers and to increase the productivity of digitization workflows.

    Abstract
    This study examines the recent trend towards the provision of subject access to imaginative literature, particularly fiction. Results of the research include: 1)an enumeration of theoretical problems associated with the provision of multi-dimensional subject access to imaginative literature; 2) an investigation of literary criticism's relevance to the subject analysis of works of imaginative literature; 3)an analysis of the denotative and connotative topical elements constituting works of imaginative literature; and, 4) an evaluation of the non-standard practice of formulating access points from criticism.

    Despite the popularity of fiction in libraries, little has been done to analyse systematically the criteria that fiction readers use when selecting books. Describes and evaluates several fiction sclassification systems from the perspective of how well they answer likely reader queries regarding the subject of a novel.     Abstract
    The Swedish Library Association's Fiction Indexing Committee was founded in 2005. The subject headings consist of two separate lists, subject headings of fiction for children and subject headings of fiction for adults. The Committee consists of librarians working at different types of libraries and at BTJ, a bibliographic agency. This enables the development of a standard for indexing fiction that is useful to different libraries and institutions. Cooperation means that the lists will be deployed in a consistent way. The participation of a bibliographic agency ensures a wide implementation in the catalogs of public libraries and school libraries.

    Abstract
    Subject headings and genre terms are notoriously difficult to apply, yet are important for fiction. The current project functions as a proof of concept, using a text-mining methodology to identify affective information (emotion and tone) about fiction titles from professional book reviews as a potential first step in automating the subject analysis process. Findings are presented and discussed, comparing results to the range of aboutness and isness information in library cataloging records. The methodology is likewise presented, and how future work might expand on the current project to enhance catalog records through text-mining is explored.

    Abstract
    Describes the OCLC Fiction Project from the point of view of a cataloguer participating in it. The project, which has been in existence since 1991, involves adding subject headings to catalogue records on the OCLC union catalogue for individual works of fiction. Discusses the 4 types of access to individual works of fiction: from/genre, character(s), geographical setting and topical. Also considers a number of issues involving in applying these headings to works (such as genre definitions, the nature of fiction, intertextuality, and the cataloguer's subjectivity)

    Abstract
    Publishers present novels with summaries, librarians provide subject headings, classification numbers and annotations, literary theorists write reviews. Readers share opinions and tags in social networks. These groups share interest in the same novel and possibly in the same library catalogs. I analyze the descriptions of novels written by these four groups to propose the enhancement of library catalogs. Results show that the story, information about the author, genre, personal experience with reading the novel, and an evaluation (awards, personal evaluation) are consistently presented by all four groups and should become standard elements for the subject description of fiction.

    Abstract
    In the classification of fiction literature in public libraries its presentation on shelves and its depth analysis in card files or selective bibliographies should supplement each other. In the article some less known traditions in the English-language area of thematical classification schemes in Germany of the twenties and since World War II are investigated. Concludingly some principles in the form of theses are stated which should be observed in the subject analysis of fiction lietrature in order to be able to meet fully the multiplicity of readers' requests

    Considers the recent trend towards the promotion, by public libraries, of literary fiction with particular reference to a new fiction initiative by the British Library which seeks to redress the imbalance between the level of access provided for fiction and non fiction in library catalogues.     Abstract
    In traditional classification, fictional works are indexed only by their form, genre, and language, while their subject content is believed to be irrelevant. However, recent research suggests that this may not be the best approach. We tested indexing of a small sample of selected fictional works by Integrative Levels Classification (ILC2), a freely faceted system based on phenomena instead of disciplines and considered the structure of the resulting classmarks. Issues in the process of subject analysis, such as selection of relevant vs. non-relevant themes and citation order of relevant ones, are identified and discussed. Some phenomena that are covered in scholarly literature can also be identified as relevant themes in fictional literature and expressed in classmarks. This can allow for hybrid search and retrieval systems covering both fiction and nonfiction, which will result in better leveraging of the knowledge contained in fictional works.

    Abstract
    In 1990, the American Library Association published its Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama, Etc. Neither the 1990 Guidelines nor the work's subsequent 2000 edition is terribly concerned with explaining why increased subject access to works of imaginative literature has come to be needed now more than in the baker's century after Cutter first allowed for such access. Inherent to the 1990 Guidelines is the notion that works of imagination have a value such that they deserve to be accessed in more or less the same manner that nonfiction works are accessed, through aboutness as well as whatness. The paper purports that the origins of this change in cataloging policy are far from humble, that they can in fact be located in a broad swath of social historiography and literary criticism.
