- Abstract
- This research revisits the classic Turing test and compares recent large language models such as ChatGPT for their abilities to reproduce human-level comprehension and compelling text generation. Two task challenges- summary and question answering- prompt ChatGPT to produce original content (98-99%) from a single text entry and sequential questions initially posed by Turing in 1950. We score the original and generated content against the OpenAI GPT-2 Output Detector from 2019, and establish multiple cases where the generated content proves original and undetectable (98%). The question of a machine fooling a human judge recedes in this work relative to the question of "how would one prove it?" The original contribution of the work presents a metric and simple grammatical set for understanding the writing mechanics of chatbots in evaluating their readability and statistical clarity, engagement, delivery, overall quality, and plagiarism risks. While Turing's original prose scores at least 14% below the machine-generated output, whether an algorithm displays hints of Turing's true initial thoughts (the "Lovelace 2.0" test) remains unanswerable.

- Abstract
- Report of a survey 96 (out of 119) US and Canadian member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to determine their use of on-line and CD-ROM data bases, including OPACs. 4 catalogues were identified: on-line mediated searching (97%); CD-ROMs (96%); end-user on-line searching (45%); and locally mounted magnetic tapes (37,5%). The latter option is expected to be the most widely used option in the new future. Although CD-ROM caused some migration from on-line, most migration was from printed sources to CD-ROM. Tables show: on-line hosts most used for intermediary on-line searching; on-line data bases most after searched by intermediaries; end user on-line systems offered by most libraries; the 20 most popular CD-ROM data bases; and the 8 magnetic tape data bases accessible on OPACs

- Abstract
- This book's purpose is to teach people who will be searching or designing text retrieval systems how the systems work. For designers, it covers problems they will face and reviews currently available solutions to provide a basis for more advanced study. For the searcher its purpose is to describe why such systems work as they do. Text Information Retrieval Systems, Second Edition is primarily about computer-based retrieval systems, but the principles apply to non-mechanized ones as well. - Winner of the ASIS Best Information Science Book Award 2000!

- Abstract
- The US Marine Corps has developed an information storage retrieval system, On-line Books that gives remote access to the complete text of the Marine Corps University war-fighting collection. Searching is through hypertext capabilities and document delivery via mailed printouts or electronic mail. Central to the system is the storage machine a main-frame attached, optical disc based network archive searver developed by File Tek Inc. Its main architectural components are: a channel network interface, a storage and transfer processor, a layered storage hierarchy composed of magnetic disc, multiple terabytes of optical discs mounted in a robotic library and shelf storage. Details the storage machine's architecture and describes other projects in the USA currently utilising multigigabyte storage technology

- Abstract
- Subject retrieval by Library of Congress (LC) Classification numbers is examined from the perspective of 5 user groups of on-line catalogues. Although, at present, librarians are the user group most likely to benefit from the LC classification advances in the capabilities of on-line catalogues. Research on the use of the LC classification schedules as a component of subject retrieval should continue.

- Abstract
- Results of a survey of North Carolina Libraries revealed that of 91 respondents, 29 had on-line catalogues. Of the libraries with on-line catalogues, 11 used the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Survey findings indicate that the DDC has limited use in on-line searching today.

- Abstract
- Research leading to a detailed content analysis and profile of the Library of Congress Classification schedules. A description of the design, methodology, and preliminary findings of research in progress. Final results of the study are expected to aid the Library of Congress in the development of a MARC format for its classification schedules and in the conversion of the schedules into machine-readable form. LC's ultimate goal is the design of an integrated system which will permit on-line editing, maintenance, and control of the schedules, on-line classification and shelflisting procedures, the production of the schedules in two or more physical formats, and the use of LCC to enhance search capabilities in on-line catalogues.

- Abstract
- Reports the findings of an experiment designed to compare on-line data bases and equivalent printed versions in 1 area of reference services, the answering of ready reference questions. 68 reference librarians searched for answers to the same set of 12 questions using either print or on-line sources. Details of the questions are given. In the case of conceptual questions on-line proved faster than print, particularly for 2-concept questions, and the increased speed was not at the expense of accuracy. In the case of factual questions, print sources proved to be considerably faster than on-line. Suggests 2 guidelines: when bibliographic information is available in both print and on-line formats, on-line should be the tool of choice, particularly for multi-concept questions; simple factul questions can be answered more quickly using printed sources.

- Abstract
- In the last 20 years, 4 technologies have dramatically changed the way users gain access to bibliographic information: on-line searching of data bases stored on computers in distant places; OPACs; CD-ROMs; and locally mounted tapes. Reports the results of a survey of 800 academic libraries to establish if they all offer these services and how their availability varies by ype of academic institution. Results revealed that most libraries do not charge for the use of computerised catalogues and data bases and there are indications that more academic libraries will be offering these tapes in the future

- Abstract
- Librarians are often so eager to adopt new technologies and systems that they can lose sight of the realities that must be dealt with. Among factors that may delay use of Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) for on-line catalogues retrieval are: limited use of DDC in libraries with operational on-line catalogues; limitations to the MARC bibliographic formats: lack of an authority structure for classification number for items catalogued. Factors that may delay development of effective classification retrieval mechanisms include unclear terminology and unreasonably high (or low) expectations.

- Abstract
- Most commercial on-line information retrieval systems are not designed to service end users and, therefore, have often built front-ends to their systems specifically to serve the end user market. These front ends have not been well accepted, mostly because the underlying systems are still difficult for end users to use successfully in searching. New techniques, based on statistical methods, that allow natural language input and return lists of records in order of likely relevance, have long been available from research laboratories. Presents 4 prototype implementations of these statistical retrieval systems that demonstrate their potential as powerful and easily used retrieval systems able to service all users. The systems consist of: the PRISE system; the CITE system; the Muscat system; and the News Retrieval Tool
