    Abstract
Discusses the characteristics and functions of the textual database management program DB/TextWorks 2.0 of Inmagic Inc. Operating on a PC microcomputer in a Windows environment (stand alone or network), it combines the advantages of full text retrieval systems and the flexibility of databases. Presents an evaluation of the program and examines its use in libraries with the DB/TextWorks Library guide kit which proposes database models conceived for various functions; acquisitions, cataloging, loans, OPAC, serials management, and interlibrary loan

    Abstract
A summary of a thesis based on the supposition that in an era of increasing leisure more time is to be available for cultural activities and that analysis can lead to a better grasp of the concept of cultural information. Discusses: the relationship of government, cultural networks and the cultural engineering sector to information; existing kinds of cultural information, their use and the impact on them of new technologies; and the characteristics and role of information professionals in this sector

    Abstract
Considers whether an information system can be designed that is capable of meeting the needs of researchers students' for training and those of the general public for information. Tests a system for specialists to determine whether non specialist could use it and whether other uses could be found for such databanks. This multimedia information system based on natural language text searching uses hypertext, associating texts, images, maps and plans of the Greek site of Delphi. Discusses natural language searching, the respective and complementary contributions of automatic and manual indexing, image and document retrieval from other databanks and the different modalities of interactive searching. Defines the features of this type of information system and assesses the limits and the potential of such a product

    Abstract
Until the 1980s, the handling of documentary information in business was usually split up among 4 unrelated independent departments: the library; archives; secretarial services; and reproduction/printing. The introduction of new technology allows the integration of these operations into a single system; comprising subsystems for: production of internal documents; acquisition and storage of external documents; information retrieval; archive creation and maintenance; and circulation of information between departments, based on local computer networks. In reality, not many businesses are making use of technology available to set up such integrated systems because of the lack of common standards for equipment and software, which makes internal and external communication unreliable. This problem may be resolved in the near future, as a result of discussions now in progress at international level.

    Abstract
Describes the backgroud to the construction of a thesaurus at Hydro-Quebec, Quebec, Canada. Several information units, linked to form a network, share the same bibliographic database. The need for coherence and efficiency was the principle motive for the construction of the multidisciplinary thesaurus. Describes the construction process, discusses the specifity of the tool, its circulation, and considers its use on a partnership basis with other information services

    Abstract
The social sciences documentation centre (CDSH) of the French National Research Centre initiated the publication in 1988 of a psychology periodicals catalogue, Catalogue thématiques des revues de psychologie. Discusses the problems involved in setting up such a catalogue, with specific reference to deciding how a printed source can best complement its parent on-line data base: in this case, CDSH's PSYSIS. The decision to produce the catalogue has been largely precipitated by low uptake of the data base. Considerable attention has been given to delimiting coverage (French and foreign specialist periodicals, multi-disciplinary periodicals); defining descriptors (involving decisions about who the periodical is aimed at); and what information to include under each entry. The main problems, still to be solved, concern lack of adequate software (only a relational data base would be fully satisfactory); and inadequate information about user requirements from hard copy material as opposed to on-line data bases. The results of this preliminary evaluation, albeit tentative, are of considerable relevance to the delopment of strategies for diffusing information on scientific periodicals in general.

    Abstract
Discusses the apparently unattainable goal of compatibility of information languages. While controlled languages can improve retrieval performance within a single system, they make cooperation across different systems more difficult. The Internet and downloading accentuate this adverse outcome and the acceleration of data exchange aggravates the problem of compatibility. Defines this familiar concept and demonstrates that coherence is just as necessary as it was for indexing languages, the proliferation of which has created confusion in grouped data banks. Describes 2 types of potential solutions, similar to those applied to automatic translation of natural languages: - harmonizing the information languages themselves, both difficult and expensive, or, the more flexible solution involving automatic harmonization of indexing formulae based on pre established concordance tables. However, structural incompatibilities between post coordinated languages and classifications may lead any harmonization tools up a blind alley, while the paths of a universal concordance model are rare and narrow

    Abstract
Describes the building of the Deutsche Bibliothek, inaugurated at Frankfurt on Main in May 1997. Its mission is to produce electronic documents from printed materials. It affers an online catalogue with a multimedia system and is accessible via the Internet. As a centre for national bibliography, it produces around 15 million records per year, both on and off-line. It comprises part of a network of European national libraries which aims to promote the creation of a European virtual library, the constitution of a depository library for digital documents and the definition of cataloguing standards for electronic documents. Access is compatible with systems used by other libraries and information centres. This programme permits the library to play an integrating role in ermany and to cooperate in international projects

    Abstract
To access a remote catalogue the searcher can use the Z39.50 standard as interface, which requires appropriate software; or for databases accessible on the WWW use a common gateway interface. The multibase access advantage of Z39.50 can also be obtained through a Web navigator by inserting a Web server/Z39.50 client software connector: this can be located either on the search site, in an intermediary position or on the database site, so determining the range of databases which can be searched. Z39.50 also offers interesting possibilities for joint and local cataloguing: multibase searching can equally be realised on intranets

    Abstract
TREC ia an annual conference held in the USA devoted to electronic systems for large full text information searching. The conference deals with evaluation and comparison techniques developed since 1992 by participants from the research and industrial fields. The work of the conference is destined for designers (rather than users) of systems which access full text information. Describes the context, objectives, organization, evaluation methods and limits of TREC

    Abstract
Evaluates an automatic indexing method based on syntactical text analysis combined with statistical analysis. Tests many combinations for the choice of term categories and weighting methods. The experiment, conducted on a software engineering corpus, shows systematic improvement in the use of syntactic term phrases compared to using only individual words as index terms

    Abstract
Classification should not be matter of imposing arbitrary structures, but a means of thinking about ways of organising collections to suit user needs. Discusses possible approaches for multimedia collections in public libraries, e.g. treating documents on all types of supports as a single entity or using centres of interest, devised to circumvent the limitations of the traditional use of decimal classification. The need to maintain awareness of local limitations is demonstrated from the example of a media centre which based collection organisation on the structure of interior space, extending over 4 levels - thus determining locations for formats such as books, records and videos. To counteract the wall effect of shelving, showcase lighting has been used but this is proving to generate excessive heat. All in all, whatever system is used, the basic necessity is to ensure that it does not create needless barriers for people wanting to use the collections
