- Abstract
- Presents a detailed evaluation of the CD-ROM data base Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), published by Library Association Publishing Ltd in partnership with SilverPlatter Information Inc. Describes the SilcerPlatter search software and gives results of test searches carried out using the CD-ROM and DIALOG on-line versions of LISA. The annual cost of subscribing to LISA on CD-ROM is 995 US dollars or 750 dollars to subscribers of other SilverPlatter data bases. LISA on CD-ROM will be of most interest to institutions which make heavy use of the on-line version and are not discouraged by the low updating frequency.

- Abstract
- Contribution to an issue devoted to serials and reference services. Aims to acquaint reference librarians with the information provided by the United States Newspaper Program and its state projects, and to describe the methods by which this information can be assessed. USNP participants are working toward the cataloguing and detailed location and holdings description of virtually every newspaper in the US. This information is resulting in the creation of a comprehensive newspaper reference tool. The USNP information is available on-line via bibliographic utilities; it is also available in an off-line product, the United States Newspaper Program National Union List. To use this information, librarians need to possess some knowledge of the scope and complexities of the bibliographic description and union listing of newspapers.

- Abstract
- In January 2010, the German National Library discontinued the print version of the national bibliography and replaced it with an online journal. This was the first step in a longer process of redefining the National Library's bibliographic services, leaving the field of traditional media - e. g. paper or CD-ROM databases - and focusing on publishing its data over the WWW. A new business model was set up - all web resources are now published in an extra bibliography series and the bibliographic data are freely available. Step by step the prices of the other bibliographic data will be also reduced. In the second stage of the project, the focus is on value-added services based on the National Library's catalogue. The main purpose is to introduce alerting services based on the user's search criteria offering different access methods such as RSS feeds, integration with e. g. Zotero, or export of the bibliographic data as a CSV or PDF file. Current standards of cataloguing remain a guide line to offer high-value end-user retrieval but they will be supplemented by automated indexing procedures to find & browse the growing number of documents. A transparent cataloguing policy and wellarranged selection menus are aimed.

- Abstract
- Index Medicus, the abstract periodical published by the National Library of Medicine, could until recently only be consulted either in its printed version or on-line (Medline). Several versions of Medline on CD-ROM are now available, and the Biomedical Working Group of VOGIN (the Dutch Association of Users of Online Information Systems) has prepared this detailed comparison. Although CD-ROM is becoming more popular, many people are still unfamiliar with the new medium, and a number of authors have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of CD-ROM when compared with its on-line and printed equivalents.

- Abstract
- Since its introduction as a library resource in 1984, the use of CD-ROM technology has proliferated among a multitude of vendors. In 1987, Ulrich's, a major supplier of serials information, jumped on the bandwagon when the entire data bases of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and Ulrich's Irregular Serials and Annuals become available on CD-ROM as Ulrich's Plus. The next year, Ebsco introduced The Serials Directory in CD-ROM version. Examines and compares these data base systems as reference tools.

- Abstract
- The Working group on Guidelines for (electronic) national bibliographies has started the work with an analysis of users and use of national bibliographies (NB). In addition to the well known importance of NB for libraries and librarians, other users and their requirements were identified. The results are presented and discussed; both existing and potential users and use were taken into account. The group will continue the work by specifying the functionality to support the various needs of different users.

- Abstract
- A controlled set of searches have been conducted by a group of searchers, at Manchester Polytechnic Library, on a trial subset of the British National Bibliography (BNB) data base on both CD-ROM and on-line. Various measures of search effectiveness and effiency were examined in relation to the effect of the differing user interface, including recall, precision, search time, user satisfaction and other more subjective factors. Discusses the potential for further research on the evaluation of CD-ROM.

- Abstract
- The article focuses on the EBSCO databases that provide services to libraries. The Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) include resources focusing on librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, and information science. LISTA has more than 21,000 articles from more than 600 periodicals and includes more than 5,000 conference papers and reports. In the database, there are also cited references and the number of times the source was used can also be found within the database. These are helpful tips in bibliography researching. The database has also several search options including "Basic Search," "Advanced Search," and Indexes." The EBSCOhost interface is simple to use and easy to grasp while LISTA is a free abstract database.

- Abstract
- Lecture given at the meeting of the committee on interloans and union catalogues at the 20th Austrian Librarian's Conference. The contents of the Österreichischen Zeitschriftendatenbank (ÖZDB) will be transferred into the data base of the Austrian Libraries' Cooperative, which uses the BIBOS system. Framework conditions of procedures have been established. The 3 data files of ÖZDB are linked logically and are redundance free; they contained over 660.000 entries in 1986. In 1988 there were 980 participants in the data base, mainly Austrian academic libraries. On-line services are included. Interim measures have been recommended for the transition period.

- Abstract
- To assist the IFLA Bibliography Section in gathering more comprehensive information on selection criteria used by national bibliographic agencies in preparing their countries' national bibliography, the Section crafted a survey that the Section chair and the Oslo Programme chair sent electronically and in print form. With the exponential availability of Web and other digital resources, the Section felt a critical need to address how national bibliographic agencies were incorporating these resources into the national bibliography. In preparation for the Section's Programme during the 71st IFLA World Library and Information Congress, the survey was sent to forty-four national libraries and bibliographic agencies in Europe. We restricted dissemination of the survey to European countries, in line with the Section's strategy to plan its programmes in ways that focused on what was happening in the area of the world where the IFLA Congress was being convened. This paper gives an analysis of the data submitted in the responses.
