    Abstract
    The US Marine Corps has developed an information storage retrieval system, On-line Books that gives remote access to the complete text of the Marine Corps University war-fighting collection. Searching is through hypertext capabilities and document delivery via mailed printouts or electronic mail. Central to the system is the storage machine a main-frame attached, optical disc based network archive searver developed by File Tek Inc. Its main architectural components are: a channel network interface, a storage and transfer processor, a layered storage hierarchy composed of magnetic disc, multiple terabytes of optical discs mounted in a robotic library and shelf storage. Details the storage machine's architecture and describes other projects in the USA currently utilising multigigabyte storage technology

    Abstract
    The history of encyclopedias and wholly new forms of encyclopedias are briefly reviewed. The possibilities and problems that hypertext presents as a basis for new forms of encyclopedias are explored. The capabilities of current systems, both experimental and commercially available, are outlined, focusing on new possibilities for authoring and design and for reading the retrieval. Examples of applications already making use of hypertext are given.

    Abstract
    Introduces what automatic authoring of a hypertext for information retrieval means. The most difficult part of the automatic construction of a hypertext is the creation of links connecting documents or document fragments that are related. Becaus of this, to many researchers it seemed natural to use information retrieval techniques for this purpose, since information retrieval has always dealt with the construction of relationships between objects mutually relevant. Presents a survey of some of the attempts toward the automatic construction of hypertexts for information retrieval. Identifies and compares scope, advantages and limitations of different approaches. Points out the main and most successful current lines of research

    Abstract
    Introduces a generic approach to the development of hypermedia information systems. Emphasises the role of intrinsic inter-document relationships in structuring and visualising a large hypermedia information space. Illustrates the use of this approach based on 3 types of similarity measurements: hypertext linkage, content similarity and usage patterns. Salient patterns in these relationships are extracted and visualised in a simle and intuitive associated network. The spatial layout of a visualisation is optimised such that closely related documents are placed near to each other and only those intrinsic connections among them are shown to users as automatically generated virtual links. Supports self-organized information space transformation based on usage patterns and othe feedback such that the visual strucutre of the information space is incrementally tailored to users' search and browsing styles

    Abstract
    Hypertext for multi-media and full-text documents is rapidly developed on all fronts. For bibliographic information retrieval the applications are promising but pose several difficulties. Describes work conducted at the School of Library and Information Science at Univ. of Western Ontario the objective of which is to add the capability of a browsing search to an existing OPAC through the use of Windowed Hypertext Interface for Zippy Retrieval and Display (WHIZRD) software. Discusses the underlying retrieval capabilities of the system. Examines design problems and solutions and outlines future enhancements

    Hypertext is an alternative to traditional linear text and has been used successfully to create useful indexes on various types of computers. HyperRez, from MaxThink, is discussed in details, as is the creation of the major Internet index, HYTELNET.     Abstract
    Reports on research examining the relationship of searcher performance and perception of performance, particulary for hypertext-based onformation retrieval systems for bibliographic data. Employs a prototype hypertext bibliographic retrieval system called HyperLynx. Evaluates its use by 83 subjects at the School of Library and Information Science and the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA. Measures of system usgae indicate that there is no significant relationship between confidence and the number of record pages visited, although confident searchers searched for shorter time periods. The reality check measures shows that both novice and experienced searchers were over confident in their performance

    Abstract
    Considering the characteristics of hypertext systems and problems such as cognitive overload and the disorientation of users, this project studies subject hypertext documents that have undergone conceptual structuring using facets for content representation and improvement of information retrieval during navigation. The main objective was to assess the possibility of the application of topic map technology for automating the compatibilization process of these structures. For this purpose, two dissertations from the UFMG Information Science Post-Graduation Program were adopted as samples. Both dissertations had been duly analyzed and structured on the MHTX (Hypertextual Map) prototype database. The faceted structures of both dissertations, which had been represented in conceptual maps, were then converted into topic maps. It was then possible to use the merge property of the topic maps to promote the semantic interrelationship between the maps and, consequently, between the hypertextual information resources proper. The merge results were then analyzed in the light of theories dealing with the compatibilization of languages developed within the realm of information technology and librarianship from the 1960s on. The main goals accomplished were: (a) the detailed conceptualization of the merge process of the topic maps, considering the possible compatibilization levels and the applicability of this technology in the integration of faceted structures; and (b) the production of a detailed sequence of steps that may be used in the implementation of topic maps based on faceted structures.

    Abstract
    Examines the effectiveness of a map and a textual contents list on the navigation performance of subjects with and without prior knowledge of the text topic in hypertext. Subjects used the document to answer 10 questions. the results showed that performance in the map condition was superior to that of the contents list condition, which in turn was superior to that of the hypertext only condition. Knowledgeable subjects performed better than non-knowledgeable subjects, except in the map condition where their performance was equivalent. the results show that non-knowledgeable users tend to rely more heavily on navigational aids than knowledgeable users, and that aids were used primarily during browsing and information retrieval in hypertext

    Describes the design and implementation of TACHIR, a tool for the automatic construction of hypertexts for information retrieval. Through the use of an authoring methodology employing a set of well known information retrieval techniques, TACHIR automatically builds up a hypertext from a document collection. The structure of the hypertext reflects a 3 level conceptual model which enables navigation among documents, index terms, and concepts using automatically determined links.     Abstract
    State of the art review of hypertext systems in use in UK libraries. Systems include public access point of information (POI) systems that provide guidance to users of local resources, and networked document retrieval systems, such as WWW, that enable users to access texts stored on machines linked by the Internet. Particular emphasis is placed on those systems that are produced inhouse by the libraries in which they are used. The review is based on a series of telephone or face to face interviews conducted with representatives of those organizations that a literature review and mailed questionnaire survey identified as current users of hypertext. Considers issues relating to system development and usability, and presents a set of appropriate guidelines for the designers of future systems. Concludes that: the principle application of hypertext systems in UK libraries is in the implementation of POI systems; that such development is most advanced in the academic sector; and that such development is set to increase in tandem with use of the WWW

    Abstract
    We present in this paper a navigation approach using a combination of functionalities encountered in classification processes, Hypertext Systems and Information Retrieval Systems. its originality lies in the cooperation of these mechanisms to restrict the consultation universe, to locate faster the searched information, and to tackle the problem of disorientation when consulting the restricted Hypergraph of retrieved information. A first version of the SYRIUS system has been developed integrating both Hypertext and Information Retrieval functionalities that we have called Hypertext Information Retrieval System (H.I.R.S.). This version has been extended using classification mechanisms. The graphic interface of this new system version is presented here. Querying the system is done through common visual representation of the database Hypergraph. The visualization of the Hypergraph can be parameterized focusing on several levels (classes, links,...)

    Abstract
    When searching information in a hypertext is limited to navigation, it is not an easy task, especially when the number of nodes and/or links becomes very large. A query based access mechanism must therefore be provided to complement the navigational tools inherent in hypertext systems. Most mechanisms currently proposed are based on conventional information retrieval models which consider documents as indepent entities, and ignore hypertext links. To promote the use of other information retrieval mechnaisms adapted to hypertext systems, responds to the following questions; how can we integrate information given by hypertext links into an information retrieval scheme; are these hypertext links (and link semantics) clues to the enhancement of retrieval effectiveness; if so, how can we use them. 2 solutions are: using a default weight function based on link tape or assigning the same strength to all link types; or using a specific weight for each particular link, i.e. the level of association or a similarity measure. Proposes an extended vector processing scheme which extracts additional information from hypertext links to enhance retrieval effectiveness. A hypertext based on 2 medium size collections, the CACM and the CISI collection has been built. The hypergraph is composed of explicit links (bibliographic references), computed links based on bibliographic information, or on hypertext links established according to document representatives (nearest neighbour)

    Abstract
    Large hypertext systems have been many benefits but can be difficult to build and use. To help overcome these obstacles, a method under development at Hewlett-Packard assists authors in creating usable hypertext. A Wizard of Oz experiment, to see what users liked and disliked, showed the need for a set of hypertext construction rules to ensure usability. Following these rules, and with computer assistance, authors are expected to do a tasks analysis of users' activities, to identify critical objects and create content nodes for them, to create links between nodes within clearly defined and cognitively justified limits, and to conduct usability tests on the resulting hypertext volume. The authoring system described has been developed for the HP help system, which has been adopted as the common help delivery system for developers of Common Open Systems Environment on Unix-like platforms
