    Abstract
Describes ELINOR (Electronic Library Information Online Retrieval), the electronic library project of De Montfort University, based at Milton Keynes, UK. The project uses document image processing to build a document database containing the full contents of undergradutae texts, including copyright material and University documents. Against the background of the strategic aims of the multi campus university, describes the hardware and software used, the inputting of documents, searching and browsing, the use of a WWW interface, major issues in dealing with publishers, and the pricing model used. Briefly notes the results of a study of user satisfaction, and how use of the system is monitored

    Abstract
Discusses the challenges to the role of map librarian posed by new digital map products. Considers factors impacting on the level and scope of user services in digital map libraries, including the physical forms in which digital spatial data are available, the comparative potential of paper maps and digital atlases; problems associated with the quality of resolution of digital map data on screen; the different levels of use of digital material; and requests for output and the copyright problem. 4 examples of digital databases and electronic atlases are described

    Abstract
Image content opens up exciting possibilities for stand-alone media, distributed networks, online networks, and on-site publishing from information systems for use by the general public, for research, collection management, education and distance learning. These developments coincide and overlap with widespread new questioning and thinking as to the role of museums in relation to their diverse publics and also may have many parallels in the library world. They raise difficult questions about intellectual propriety rights - copyright protection, fair renumeration and complex questions concerning moral rights. Clearly international cooperation, working partnerships and consortia are going to gain further importance and significance

Outlines the original mission to use new technology to provide copies of copyright articles more effiently, and to take net efficiency gain as a usage of copyright fee. Details the present ADONIS service - its mission is the same although the manner of achieving it has changed - providing a history of the last 10 years; lists recent developments, planned developments and highlights the main problems of ADONIS to be pricing

    Abstract
Downloading and information filtering are prerequisites for efficient use of electronic documents available in databases or on the Internet. Taking full advantage of electronic text collections requires a proper legal framework. Under present copyright law, electronic copying is subject to prior consent from the copyright owner, with due regard to fair use exceptions. This approach is followed by the European Union in its Database Protection Directive. The Directive leaves important questions concerning the fair use doctrine, compulsory licenses, and non copyright ('copyleft') to be resolved by national implementation as well as contractual arrangements between publishers and authors. The Directive's strong emphasis on direct revenues from users to copyright owners should be supplemented by compulsory licenses. Unrestricted access to information adds enormous value to database use and would result in more revenue for the authors and makers of databases. If the public's interest in access to information id deemed paramount to private copyright, government should intervene to secure sufficient revenues for the copyright owners

    Abstract
Describes the introduction of a current awareness service, based on the contents pages of periodicals received by Lund Univ. Library, Sweden, and discusses the use of scanners, electronic mail and facsimile transmission (FAX) techniques. The systen checks in the periodicals, scans the contents pages, stores the information on the system's file server, and sends the information to the users' electronic mail address or facsimile transmission address. Recognition of possible copyright problems led to an agreement with Elsevier Publ. Co. on the basis that the system was a pilot project

    Abstract
Traces the development of significant terms in UK and US copyright and places copyright protection in its historical context. Incorporating computer programs into copyright protection implies that writing constitutes a unifying principle for documents and computers and yields a description of the development of computers of greater explanatory power than the predominant analogies between the computer and the human mind

    Abstract
Presents a summary of a report published by the US Department of Commerce on the impact of the National Information Infrastructure (NII), the information superhgihway, on copyright laws in the USA. Explains the backgroud to the report, the aims of the NII, the role of the Information Infrastructure Task Force (IITF) set up by the Clinton administration, and the work of the Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights within the IITF. Presents the report's recommendations to the US Congress on changes to copyright laws, including clarification of the copyright owner's distribution right and amendment of library privileges to bring them into the digital age.

    Abstract
The concept of a digital library has been stimulated by recent advances in computing technology. These developments hold the promise of transforming libraries into interactive centres of learning and research by virtue of inexpensive digital storage, easy-to-use search engines, and powerful computing hardware. However, libraries are handicapped in their move to digital collections by enormous legal problems in securing rights to much of the current literature. Solutions to this dilemma are not on the immediate horizon, but eventually will include changes in the current copyright law and technological arrangements to protect the interests of the owners of intellectual property. Suggests that librarians might find a more valuable role not in getting information to an electronic state, but in being its organizers and facilitators

    Abstract
Explores the intellectual property issues that arise in connection with the production and distribution of multimedia products, focusing on recent efforts by a major US art museum to prepare a CD-ROM edition of its collection and catalogue. Issues discussed include: copyright interests and moral rights of artists and others whose works were to be included in the product; respective rights of the museum and the various expert contractors employed in the production process; and the ability of the museum to use copyright, patent and licensing law to protect the finished product against unauthorized exploitation. Concludes that the producer of a multimedia product faces significant legal uncertainty because of the law's limited experience in applying traditional intellectual property doctrines to this novel environment

    Abstract
The new technologies that are now in development will destroy copyright as it is currently known. Once it is simple to send articles in image form anywhere on the network to one or many colleagues, people will begin doing it. No amount of ligitation or intimidation will stop the practice, since it facilitates the use of information in a productive way. In addition, much that is now published by publishers will be published by the author on the various networks that will be available to him. Publishers must begin now to plan for a complete economic restructuring of the information economy
