    Abstract
Despite the popularity of fiction in libraries, little has been done to analyse systematically the criteria that fiction readers use when selecting books. Describes and evaluates several fiction sclassification systems from the perspective of how well they answer likely reader queries regarding the subject of a novel. Examines the 2-faceted 'levels-of-access' concept that is the common point of reference in all comparisons. Discusses classification schemes in terms of theri utility for browsing, subject headings for card catalogues, and printed indexes. Also discusses the provision of multifaceted subject access through on-line fiction cataloguing. Suggests further investigation of levels of access

    Abstract
Issues concerning the formulation and application of a model of how humans value information are examined. Formulation of a value function is based on research from modelling, value assessment, human information seeking behavior, and human decision making. The proposed function is incorporated into a computer-based fiction retrieval system and evaluated using data from nine searches. Evaluation is based on the ability of an individual's value function to discriminate among novels selected, rejected, and not considered. The results are discussed in terms of both formulation and utilization of a value function as well as the implications for extending the proposed formulation to other information seeking environments

    Abstract
Because classification of fiction has posed a dilemma for librarians for many years, the author conducted a survey of the classification practices of larger llibrary systems in the United States. The majority of libraries physically separate adult fiction from adult nonfiction. A large percentage of libraries use genre categorization to arrange a part of their fiction collection. The author concludes: "We now know what we are doing, but are we sure of the whys?"

    Abstract
Attempts to see whether any research successfully supports principles of fiction classification that were laid out by early classification theorists. The research shows that there is some evidence to suggest that fiction classification makes it easier for users to find the type of novel desired. At its best, fiction classification should and can expose readers to lesser-known authors within a particular genre, therefore performing a valuable and cost-effective methods of readers' guidance. Finally, evidence suggests that there is still some confusion over which major practical method to use when classifying fiction: simply marking the spines of classified works (but leaving them interfiled with the regular collection) or physically separating classified fiction from the general fiction collection

    Abstract
Over many years there have been occasionally items in The Indexer on the question of whatever fiction needs to be indexed. An attempt is made here to bring together the views of authors, publishers, reviewers, readers, literary societies and indexers in order to see what the various groups of fiction users think of the matter

    Abstract
A literature survey regarding fiction classification in US public libraries indicated that classifying fiction helps users to find the type of book they want. Questions not yet answered by research, including the number of categories of genre subdivisions needed, are noted.

    Abstract
Ways of classifying adult fiction vary from library to library in the absence of a standard or universal system. Describes a questionnaire survey of 67 libraries which attempted to identify the various method used by libraries in classifying, arranging and displaying their adult fiction collections. Stresses the need for an evaluation of the methods used and to explore user needs, genre categories, and techniques used by bookstores
