    Abstract
    Information retrieval systems such as library OPACs have been largely designed to give the impression of being single user systems, the existence and activity of other users being hidden from each other. However, informal observations indicate significant collaboration between users despite the fact that existing systems fail to support this. Describes the development of an interface, the Ariadne system, that supports collaboration through the storage and re-use of others' search processes promoting better visualization of the information data structures being browsed and more effective means of communicating the browsing process. Discusses issues relating to privacy and ownership resulting from the storage of users' searches. Argues that introducing support for collaboration into information retrieval systems would help users to learn and use the systems more effectively

    Abstract
    Information retrieval and exploration of work domains through databases and integrated information systems has become increasingly important in many modern work settings (as well as in libraries). The problem space of the users is defined on occasion by the dynamically changing requirements from their tasks and goals. it is argued that IR system design should be based on an analysis of the properties of the work domain, the task situation and the user characteristics. The paper describes a general framework for IR system design that has been used in the design of a library system. A special problem identified from use of the framework in domain analysis of fiction retrieval is treated in more detail: mapping the authors' domain structures to the domain structures expressed in users' needs in indexing and representation of fiction

    Abstract
    This paper outlines strategies and methods for tackling the enormous challenges presented by an emerging Information Society in which the resources of libraries and museums are gradually being made available on-line in electronic form. It begins from two fundamental premises: first, that the experience of libraries, museums, archives and similar institutions in organising, ordering, classing and accessing knowledge is an obvious point of departure for serious strategies of search and access. A second premise is that the methods used for presentation of knowledge in libraries offer valuable clues for a coherent access, interface and strategy, offering a key to a common look and feel for all our activities, be it creating, classing, publishing or accessing. Following from these premises is a new approach to the traditions of knowledge collection, organisation and retrieval. At one end of the spectrum there has been a dream that everything could be collected in one centralized institution. This inspired the Library of Alexandria, the British Museum and a host of other efforts. At the other end of the spectrum there has been an assumption that everything could be decentralised in a completely distributed system. Our claim is that neither of these extremes can work, which means that a new model is called for: a centralised repository of meta-data, a digital reference room which is effectively a cumulative collection of all existing reference sections in libraries and museums

    Abstract
    Develops a framework for assessing the appropriateness of alternative interfaces and user tasks for systems in which significance of computational delays cannot be ignored. The framework is motivated by the ability of users to attune to the duration and pace of events in their environment. The framework is applied to interactive information retrieval, assessing alternative design, and identifying how interface design details can enhance effective interactive information retrieval. Temporal interface requirements can have a significant influence upon overall system design and the view of task adopted by users

    Abstract
    Capability and capacity in handling the topology of a special subject information field has made infomapping techniques and systems instrumental in information searching, monitoring and navigation. Applying the technique to communication networks can reveal the intellectual relationships among junior and senior researchers in the field, and can also show the continuing popularity of a particular researcher's citation record over time. Reports the use of Java in making a cartoon series of chronological maps based on citation analysis on a special subject field (nutrition and dietetics). The map making methods, Java programming, and statistical analysis of the map data are presented, and the advantage and significance of constructing Java maps in enhancing information retrieval discussed. Further technical developments in applying VRML to link together a 3-D spatial indexing system and a 2-D HTML Web site are suggested

    Abstract
    Reports on work in progress to define an object oriented model of a probabilistic information retrieval system (OKAPI), the central component of which is the query itself. Considers how to represent queries both internally and at the user interface level, and their relationship with other components of the model. The model will form the basis of a configurable user interface, which allows controlled experiments to be undertaken, and could be adapted to the needs of different users accessing different databases. Implementation will involve the use of a high level interpreted scripting language for overall control, communicating with an internal model and an interface model, designed and developed using object oriented techniques

    Abstract
    Describes the development, by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Malaya University, of ONLIS (Online Library Information System), a customized user interface for coputerized MARC cataloguing and information retrieval, targeted for use in small libraries and information centres. Micro CDS/ISIS ver. 3.07 software package and its built in PAscal language were used for the design process and development. Design philosophy centres on the development of a very user friendly and simple interface, capable of mimicking the salient features of a contemporary commercial library package, yet easy to implement and maintain in a small library environment requiring little or no technical expertise. The system incorporates many new features and comprises 2 main components: data entry and file maintenace; and information retrieval. A security system is incorporated into the former environment to ensure data integrity and regulate important file maintenance tasks. While the system is ready for immediate implementation in libraries, modifications and enhancements are currently being undertaken to make it a truly reliable product. Concludes that some degree of user training in MARC and cataloguing using AACR2 is necessary to get the maximum benefits from the systems

    Abstract
    This paper examines issues relating to the use of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) in a future development of view-based searching to Online Public Access Catalogues (OPAC). View-based searching systems, exercising the principles of fully faceted classification techniques for both bibliographic and corporate database retrieval applications, are now being applied to utilise Dewey concept hierarchies in a University OPAC. Issues of efficiency and effectiveness in the evolving organisation and classification of information within libraries are examined to explain why fully faceted classification schemes have yet to realise their full potential in libraries. The key to their application in OPACs lies in the use of faceted classification as pre-coordinated indexing and abandoning the single dimension relative ordering of books on shelves. The need to maintain a single relative physical position on a bookshelf is the major source of complexity in classification. Extensive latent benefits will be realised when systematic subject arrangements, providing alternative views onto OPACs, are coupled to view-based browser and search techniques. Time and effort will be saved, and effectiveness increased, as rapid access is provided to the most appropriate information to satisfy the needs of the user. A future for Dewey Classification divorced from its decimal notation is anticipated

    Abstract
    Fiction reading is often neglected by young people. One reason could be that traditional retrieval aids give little help in the retrieval of fiction. A graphic interface may solve this problem if it is designed according to specific criteria such as ease of use, use of icons, availability of a help function and provision of access points particularly suited to fiction. To formulate suitable criteria, the specific characteristics of young people, such as age, gender, computer literacy, reading ability, typing and spelling ability and vocabulary, will have to be considered

    Abstract
    The search tools familiar from the personal computer are propagating to mobile devices. Are users willing to type keywords with the limited keypad of an ordinary mobile phone? How does mobile search differ from stationary search? The author found that users are surprisingly willing to use search also with the traditional phone keypad, and foresees a search revolution as mobile devices enable location-based search.

    Abstract
    An approach to accessing databases, which makes extensive use of structured thesaurus views for presenting and searching a large bibliographic database through progressive refinement, is being investigated in a research project which is seeking to apply usability criteria as the determinant for interface design. It aims to investigate measurements of retrieval performance in an application of graphical user interface techniques using multi-windowed layered attribute value aggregation, including those provided by a structured thesaurus, to access bibliographic databases. This paper reports on the progress made in the first year of the project of the application of usability methodologies, the revision of a preliminray design and the resulting prototype development.     Abstract
    The growth of medical, academic resources on the World Wide Web has led to much greater incentives and opportunities for nursing and medical students, researchers and practitioners to access Web resources. However, usersindividual differences and the variety of information-retrieval mechanisms provided by medical web resources may combine to reduce the benefits of this information resource. In a study designed to qualitatively analyse the interaction of such individual- and system-differences, a reliable method of representing WWW navigational data was found to be important in assisting traditional methodologies of representation and analysis. The methodology of graphically representing such navigational data, and the support such a technique may offer the qualitative analysis of user-system interactions, is thus described in detail and with reference to one specific example drawn from the data collected. Further, some preliminary findings deriving from the use of graphical and more traditional methodologies in this study are also represented

Describes a system that embodies just 1 kind of explicit support; a graphical representation of the search process that can be manipulated and discussed by users.     Abstract
    Proposes a method of organizing documents based on the concepts of aggregation and hierarchies and a graphical user interface to provide a more intuitive form of Boolean query. The design is based on mapping the nodes of the aggregation hierarchy to Boolean intersection operations, mapping the nodes of the generalization hierarchy Boolean intersection operations (?), and providing a concrete, graphical, manipulable representation of both these node types. A working prototype interface was constructed and evaluated experimentally using 16 subjects against a classical command-line Boolean query interface. The graphical interface produced less than one-tenth of the errors of the textual interface, on average. Significant differences in time spent specifying queries were not found. Makes observations and comments to provide guidance for designers

    Abstract
    In this paper, we report on the second part of an empirical study designed to observe how users interact with World Wide Web resources. Applying a holistic approach, the researches examine users' cognitive, affective, and physical behaviors during user-Web interaction in order to understand better the nature of information retrieval on the Web, the needs of Web users, and the problem-solving strategies Web users employ. From analyses and the participant verbalizations collected during monitored searches, the researchers developed a taxonomy of problem solving strategies. The coding scheme was developed based on a content analysis of the integrated process data. Information from triangulation follow-up with participants via anonymously completed questionnaires, the taxonomy, and analyses of search transcripts were collected to determine 1) what problems users encountered during the interaction and how users solved these problems; and 2) which problem-solving strategies Web users considered and selected for finding factual information. The focus of the coding was on the participants' cognitive, affective, and physical behaviors in response to the components of the problems encountered, which included problems of the following types: Web interfaces, users' mental models, and the Web information sources. Searching behavior and problem-solving patterns are described and interpreted within the relevant situational context and the problems users encountered are identified and analyzed. Both the problems users faced and their problem-solving approaches endeavored evidence a strong reliance on mental models of the features available on sites, the location of those features, and other interface design concepts
