    Abstract
A summary of brain theory is given so far as it is contained within the framework of Localization Theory. Difficulties of this "conventional theory" are traced back to a specific deficiency: there is no way to express relations between active cells (as for instance their representing parts of the same object). A new theory is proposed to cure this deficiency. It introduces a new kind of dynamical control, termed synaptic modulation, according to which synapses switch between a conducting and a non- conducting state. The dynamics of this variable is controlled on a fast time scale by correlations in the temporal fine structure of cellular signals. Furthermore, conventional synaptic plasticity is replaced by a refined version. Synaptic modulation and plasticity form the basis for short-term and long-term memory, respectively. Signal correlations, shaped by the variable network, express structure and relationships within objects. In particular, the figure-ground problem may be solved in this way. Synaptic modulation introduces exibility into cerebral networks which is necessary to solve the invariance problem. Since momentarily useless connections are deactivated, interference between di erent memory traces can be reduced, and memory capacity increased, in comparison with conventional associative memory

    Abstract
Research leading to a detailed content analysis and profile of the Library of Congress Classification schedules. A description of the design, methodology, and preliminary findings of research in progress. Final results of the study are expected to aid the Library of Congress in the development of a MARC format for its classification schedules and in the conversion of the schedules into machine-readable form. LC's ultimate goal is the design of an integrated system which will permit on-line editing, maintenance, and control of the schedules, on-line classification and shelflisting procedures, the production of the schedules in two or more physical formats, and the use of LCC to enhance search capabilities in on-line catalogues.

    Abstract
A retrieval experiment was conducted to compare on-line searching using terms opposed to citations. This is the first study in which a single data base was used to retrieve two equivalent sets for each query, one using terms found in the bibliographic record to achieve higher recall, and the other using documents. Reports on the use of a second citation searching strategy. Overall, by using both types of search keys, the total recall is increased.

    Abstract
Optimal retrieval in on-line searching can be achieved through combined use of both natural language and controlled vocabularies. However, there is a large variety of types of controlled vocabulary in data bases and often more than one in a single data base. Optimal use of these vocabularies requires understanding what types of languages are involved, and taking advantage of the particular mix of vocabularies in a given data base. Examples 4 major types of indexing and classification used in data bases and puts these 4 in the context of 3 other approaches to subject access. Discusses how to evaluate a new data base for various forms of subject access.

    Abstract
The PRO-CITE and BIBLIO-LINK software packages make the process of compiling bibliographies and internal data bases much easier than when all the steps in the process were manual (compiling, typing). The 2 programs work on records that have been downloaded from on-line data bases. BIBLIO-LINK analyses the downloaded records to determine document type and stores the data in the appropriate PRO-CITE workform, putting fields from the downloaded record into the correct PRO-CITE fields.

    Abstract
Paper presented at a symposium on 'Implementing the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT): Controlled Vocabulary in the Extended MARC format', held at the 1989 Annual Conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America. The only way to get bibliographic records on to campus on-line library catalogues, and slide records on the national bibliographic utilities, is through the use of MARC. Discusses the importance of having individual slide and photograph records on the national bibliographic utilities, and considers the obstacles which currently make this difficult. Discusses mapping to MARC from data base management systems.

    Abstract
Computer have been used in 2 areas of printed index production: to sort entries and fromat printed indexes, and to derive a series of index entries from a minimum intellectual input. Computer indexing enables more indexing terms to be used as well as weighted terms, links and roles. Interest in automatic indexing peaked in the mid-1960s and has since declined. Interest in machine-aided indexing concentrates on using the computer for on-line display or for indexing by extraction. Computers have also made possible the implementation of retrieval systems without indexing-free text systems. Considers future prospects and needs

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue devoted to subject control in on-line catalogues. Keyword searching with Boolean operators was impossible in the traditional on-line catalogue and its promised benefits in on-line systems are not yet clear. Reports on a survey undertaken at Brigham Young University library, Utah, which investigated this issue when the library was selected as a test site for keyword searching in the NOTIS on-line catalogue. Results of the survey were mixed. While keyword searching will require increased computer capacity for unstricted use, students, though content with the new tool, are not adept at using its sophisticated features and will require much more training than for the basic NOTIS on-line catalogue.

    Abstract
Free text searching with keywords in a complete data store is not necessarily the best automatic retrieval method. There must be a proper classification of documents and concepts and the use of a proper classification system avoids problems of terminological deficiency. The dialogue search form makes the on-line catalogue a new information medium. A bibliographic unit must be created with as many search access points as possible, using verbal and classificatory search elements. Verbal search categories must include free text elements for individual search access requirements and a controlled vocabulary with syntactic connections. Classified data should consist of a universal classification system with clear structural notation for access and surface searching, together with several specialist subject classifications for differentiated documentation and retrieval. The universal classification needs no detailed subdivision: it serves mainly as a guide and entry to the detailed sub-systems
