    Abstract
Discusses the storage of images (Australian historical photographs) and associated descriptive text, and the simultaneous on-line retrieval of both the images and the text. Describes the process of image retrieval from videodisc linked to data bases focusing on the Bicentennial Archives Project at the New South Wales Government Printing Office. The following aspects are examined: history of the project; systems now operating; hardware; videodisc production; and data base creation and information retrieval. Discusses applications of this system in other Australian institutions and outlines some major advantages of videodisc-based image retrieval systems.

    Abstract
A study was done to test the effectiveness of retrieval using title word searching. It was based on actual search profiles used in the Mechanized Information Center at Ohio State University, in order ro replicate as closely as possible actual searching conditions. Fewer than 50% of the relevant titles were retrieved by keywords in titles. The low rate of retrieval can be attributes to three sources: titles themselves, user and information specialist ignorance of the subject vocabulary in use, and to general language problems. Across fields it was found that the social sciences had the best retrieval rate, with science having the next best, and arts and humanities the lowest. Ways to enhance and supplement keyword in title searching on the computer and in printed indexes are discussed.

    Abstract
Presents a detailed evaluation of the CD-ROM data base Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), published by Library Association Publishing Ltd in partnership with SilverPlatter Information Inc. Describes the SilcerPlatter search software and gives results of test searches carried out using the CD-ROM and DIALOG on-line versions of LISA. The annual cost of subscribing to LISA on CD-ROM is 995 US dollars or 750 dollars to subscribers of other SilverPlatter data bases. LISA on CD-ROM will be of most interest to institutions which make heavy use of the on-line version and are not discouraged by the low updating frequency.

    Abstract
Describes the background and context for the development of a trade related thesaurus in the Office States Trade Representative (USTR) and discusses thesaurus construction and the approach to thesaurus use in this government agency. During this process a strong end user orientation has been emphasised. The on-line USTR Trade Thesaurus has been integrated into several in-house data bases, including WordPerfect (WP), the USTR word processing system. A WordPerfect indexing card system permits users to assign up to 5 indexing terms from the Thesaurus during the normal WP exiting and saving procedure. Users may add proposed new terms directly into a system or suggest thesaurus modifications directly on-line by completing an 'add' or 'modify' screen.

    Abstract
An essential part of information retrieval knowledge is the knowledge of data base contents and structures. Currently, the variety of data bases is so wide that it is difficult to know the contents and structure of a particular data base and how they differ from those of other data bases. Because of the lack of commonly acknowledged guidelines for data base descriptions, each on-line service designs and produces printed manuals, on-line help texts and other user documentation in its own manner. For the presentation of exact information and knowledge on a data base, common, structured principles for data base descriptions are needed. Requirements and some solutions for such description principles are presented.

    Abstract
2nd of two articles based on the results of a survey of on-line public access catalogues (OPACs) in public libraries carried out by Manchester Library School. 20 UK libraries provided data for the survey. Discusses types of OPAC configurations in use, suppliers of systems, help facilities, display of data, and subject searching on OPACs. Concludes that, in general, OPACs make accessing a catalogue easy and that this encourages catalogue use, resulting in increased document demand levels and in more satisfied customers.

    Abstract
The history of encyclopedias and wholly new forms of encyclopedias are briefly reviewed. The possibilities and problems that hypertext presents as a basis for new forms of encyclopedias are explored. The capabilities of current systems, both experimental and commercially available, are outlined, focusing on new possibilities for authoring and design and for reading the retrieval. Examples of applications already making use of hypertext are given.

    Abstract
The information avalanche will continue, but the information problem can be overcome by well organised cooperation between large and small computers in information work. The use of dBase is feasible as a data bank system for small computers and is described, with examples, in control of the stock of information requirements and the literature retrieval system.

    Abstract
Contribution to a special section on library automation and software. Discusses trends in enquiries received at the Aslib Information Recources Centre since it was set up in Jan 86 and the underlying issues which have affected them, including: the move away from microcomputers to the IBM-PC and the present dominance of the MS-DOS operating system; a growing interest in larger, multi-user computers; and more interest in software for integrated library sytems which include on-line public access catalogues.

    Abstract

    Abstract
This paper examines how classification schemes provide subject access. Concept arrangement before computers is compared to its role after machine-based exact match techniques have evolved. The change in retrieval techniques corresponds to a change in philosophy of knowledge. Classification schemes, emerging from Aristotelian philosophy, provide conceptual frameworks for direct human interaction to foster reference and communication. Computer-based systems provide access with a different emphasis on conceptual arrangement. Employing a philosophy of knowledge as facets, computer programs use word-frequency analyses, uncontrolled vocabulary, and feedback procedures to define subject access. Classification for machine processing optimizes the power of these systems. Though the influence of Aristotelian philosophy declines, structures for concept communication continue to be instrumental in the efficient operation of computer-based systems. Ongoing classification work can help direct vague inquiries and reflect human and social relationships to knowledge

    Abstract
Planning the evaluation of an information retrieval system involves a determination of the performance descriptors and measures appropriate to the system objectives and a development of an evaluation design that ensures the effect of variation in components of interest will be isolated and assessed in an anbiased fashion. Presents an evaluation model that is appropriate to the assessment of the effect, from the perspective of the user, of variation in the interface to the system. The model is exemplified by an application to evaluation of an experimental on-line public access catalogue interface.

    Abstract
The paper will discuss the following points: What do we mean by a 'good' catalogue, which requirements to the database design must be satisfied for the system to act as a good catalogue, which types of database management system should we use, can a catalogue be distributed on several computers and how will this influenece the performance, availability, maintenance, etc., how does a 'union' catalogue consusting of several independant catalogues on different computers act as 'a' catalogue?
