    Abstract
    Traditional cataloging support services such as typing and filing are gradually being eliminated in favor of more sophisticated skills. Library staff members who are specialized in imminently obsolete skills must be re-educated to become productive participants in the "Golden Age" of technology. The Catalog Management section at the Iowa State University Library is attempting to make this process painless and exciting for all of its employees.

    In lengthy interviews geoscience information specialists from government, academic institutions, and the corporate world discussed their views of the ideal education for practitioners in their field. They shared opinions and experiences concerning subject specialization, specific competencies and services, users and their information needs, management and administrative skills, and preparation for teaching and research. Common themes were those of new technologies, changing paradigms for libraries and information services, funding priorities, increasing and often competing demands on the information specialist's time, and the necessity for marketing and value-added services

    Abstract
    The role of cataloging education within the library profession is a topic of considerable interest and debate. Fifty-five heads of reference and sixty-five heads of cataloging in Association of Research Librarians institutions responded to a survey based upon the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services Educational Policy Statement, Appendix: Knowledge and Skills, Intellectual Access and Information Organization, concerning the importance of cataloging competencies for all entry-level academic librarians. The survey found that practitioners agreed upon a definite set of core cataloging competencies that all entry-level academic librarians should possess. This finding holds larger implications for library education for academic librarians and for the profession as a whole.

    Abstract
    Cataloguing departments have faced enourmous transitions during the last 20 years due to technolgical advances, changing administrative goals, and shrinking budgets. The responsibilities of professional cataloguers have greatly expanded and now include management, budgeting, and planning. Research indicates that entry-level cataloguers feel unprepared for managerial responsibilities by their graduate education. Educators and practitioners should examine the need for potential cataloguing managers and consider changing library school curricula in an effective and realistic manner to support this trend

    Abstract
    Describes the development, funding and staffing of the Information Literacy Program (ILP) at the Mantor Library at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). The programme aims at helping both UMF students and community patrons to understand better how and where to look for information. Instruction takes place in an electronic classroom equipped with 21 computers running campus-standard Web-browsers and word processing; the instructor's station can control all of the computers in the classroom, or the instructor may pass or share control with students.     Cataloguing education has been the focus of definition and ebate for over a century. Moving beyond cataloguing theory and the creation of records, to the management and process of producing catalogues, increases the complexity of demands placed on professionals and educators. Graduates need to understand their catalogues and integrated systems holistically. This requires a knowledge of each element, of standards governing the creation and maintenance of records, and of the relationship between the record and the catalogue and/or its constituent network.     Abstract
    Explores the newly emerging information discipline of records management, focusing on its current status in the UK where it is represented by a range of sector specific and general organizations for information professionals. While records management involves some skills and knowledge which are different from those already mastered by library and information professionals, there are significant overlaps in terms of cataloguing, classification, indexing, identifying and meeting user needs and the challenge of dealing with information in electronic form.     Abstract
    Designing an interdisciplinary graduate program in knowledge management requires a good understanding of knowledge processes and the ability to differentiate between information management and knowledge management. Given the complexity of knowledge and the nature of its existence, there is a need for graduate programs to go beyond information management and include in the curriculum disciplines that deal with social, cultural, and economic issues such as communication, cognitive science, and business. An understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge management is necessary for a more balanced and practical approach to the development of a knowledge management curriculum. In this article, the design and development of an interdisciplinary graduate program in knowledge management at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is reported. The initiation of the program was influenced by the strong demand from the public sector in Singapore for knowledge management professionals. It was developed in close association with the information studies program at Nanyang Technological University. In the first year, the program attracted 230 applicants, of which 45 were selected-22 students came from the public sector and 23 students came from the private sector.

    Abstract
    This paper identifies six major challenges facing the information profession as the "information society" emerges: assisting users to deal with information overload; the high level of technical skills required to manage the new information and communication technologies; the competition with other professions for the management positions in converged library, information, and computing services; the need to incorporate a broader range of knowledge and skills, drawn from those traditionally seen as separate sectors of the information industry such as publishing; the need to develop a higher level of skills in teaching and facilitating the use of information; and the need for a greater ability to work with other people. It points to some solutions which have been adopted by schools of librarianship in the UK, many of them involving collaboration with other disciplines to produce the required depth of knowledge. It also calls for changes in the schools' approach to teaching, learning, and research, and in the practitioner community's support for education in general and continuing professional development in particular. Finally, it points to the dangers of inertia.
