    Abstract
The role of the library in distance ducation is evolving. Guided by accreditation standards, libraries seek to meet the needs of distant learners through a variety of services and products. While the Internet plays a significant role in the access and delivery of library services, new information technology is being developed to meet the growing needs and demands of distant learners

    Abstract
This book provides a comprehensive overview of e-learning (online learning) systems in the context of system delivery for Higher Education Information Services. The book considers practical issues in choosing a virtual learning environment and discusses a range of issues in implementing, managing and maintaining the service for users. In particular, the issue of accessibility and usability is discussed in the context of recent legislation.

    Abstract
Describes the design and development of a multimedia guide to learning services. Gives details of the package which encompasses library and computing facilities, subject resources, floorplans and site personnel. Discusses the problems associated with introducing large numbers of students to learning services and explores the advantages of the multimedia approach. Outlines the multipurpose nature of the package and describes plans for future evaluation and developments

    Abstract
Reports a study of undergraduate students' use of computer-based information retrieval services in relation to their cognitive and learning styles. Includes a survey of staff at Sheffield University, UK on their use of computer databases and the extend to which undergraduates are made aware of these services. Results show that undergraduate use is low and varies greatly between students of differnt faculties. Student searching behaviour was found to be basic and their performance inadequate. Significant correlation's between cognitive and learning styles and search behaviour were found. Computer-assisted learning (CAL) packages were developed and customised for 3 departments. Guidelines were drawn up based on the project's findings for introducing a computerised information sources programme into the undergraduate curriculum and preparing CAL teaching packages on information skills

    Abstract
Describes the development and evaluation, at Western Michigan University, of a multimedia self instructional tutorial designed to introduce library services and teach basic skills in a cost effective manner. Reports results of an evaluation comparing the tutorial with traditional workbook instruction. No significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups, indicating that the tutorial was as effective as the workbook. Includes implications for user education, along with advice for developers of similar projects

    Abstract
Describes the development of a Web Library Guide at Birmingham University, UK. Having developed a hypertext guide using Asymetrix Toolbook which gave guidance to users on the subjects and services available in the main library of the university, the information was repackaged for loading on to the WWW. Outlines the reasons for this move, explains the process of the transposition, and suggests future possibilities for the project

    Abstract
University education continues to be revolutionized by the use of Web-based teaching and learning systems. Following on from "The Digital University: Reinventing the Academy", this book provides a fully up-to-date and practical guide to using and implementing this important technology. Looking specifically at asynchronous collaboration, it covers:- policies- management of collaboration- distance learning- support for authoring- course design- educational metadata schemaand will be an essential buy for managers, lecturers, administrators, department heads and researchers. It includes a foreword by Ben Shneiderman, Director of the HCI Laboratory at the University of Maryland, USA.

    Abstract
The knowledge represented in learning materials for the sciences is typically organized around term-based or "weakly-structured" models of concepts and their interrelationships. We introduce a "strongly-structured" model of scientific concepts that provides the foundation for a knowledge base (KB) of concept representations. An extension of the Alexandria Digital Library employs such a KB, together with associated collection and services, to support undergraduate leaming.

    Abstract
This publication reflects the content and richness of the IFLA satellite meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2003. It was devoted to e-learning for the marketing and management of libraries and was organized by the IFLA Management & Marketing Section, with the help of the University of Geneva, the Ecole nationale supérieure des sciences de l'information des bibliotheques (ENSSIB, France) and the Agence Intergouvernementale de la FrancophonieI INTIF. Contributions from experts examine the fundamental e-learning issues raised in Africa, Europe, India and North America, as weIl as illustrating the power and diversity of this new teaching medium. In the final, informal discussions, chaired by Réjean Savard and Jean-Michel Salaün, we are given many tentative insights into what the future holds for both teachers and students alike.
