    Abstract
    Provides a framework for analysing the utility, usability and likeability of net and web services and illustrates its application to significant aspects of supporting scholarly communities. The utility of the net and web are measured in terms of the growth of usage and the different services involved are distinguished in terms of their specific utilities. A layered protocol model is used to model discourse through the net and is extended to encompass interaction in communities. An operational criterion for distinguishing different communities is defined in terms of the types of awareness that resource providers and user have of one another. Develops a temporal model of discourse that enables the spectrum of services ranging from real-time discourse to long-term publication to be analyzed in a unified framework. The dimensions of awareness and time are used to characterise and compare the full range of net services and model their unification through the next generation of web browsers

    Abstract
    Reviews the significant changes in information technology over the last 50 years and considers the many implications for information services. The Internet, global access to distributed information sources, and remote users all present challenges to would-be providers of information services. As resources proliferate, the information professional must develop new methods for locating and accessing them: reliance on publishers and reviews is no longer sufficient. Information service providers can now serve more diverse clienteles, but must be aware of the greater range of information needs and styles of information seeking.     Abstract
    This paper describes a study conducted to determine the paths digital reference services take through a general process model of asynchronous digital reference. A survey based on the general process model was conducted; each decision point in this model provided the basis for at least one question. Common, uncommon, and wished-for practices are identified, as well as correlations between characteristics of services and the practices employed by those services. Identification of such trends has implications for the development of software tools for digital reference. This study presents a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in digital reference as of late 2001- early 2002, and validates the general process model of asynchronous digital reference.

    A number of map libraries have come to view the WWW as a mechanism for enhancing existing services. Examines key management issues involved in delivering geographic information and services on the Web with reference to the Web-enhanced service provided by the University of Virginia Library's Geographic Information Center (GIC). The integration of GIC's Web delivery into daily geographic information service was guided by 4 factors: a defined clientele, articulated scope of services, direct emphasis of the site, and technical support.     Internet Newsgroup archives on services such as DejaNews offer important sources of information that may not be found elsewhere online. Describes the content of the DejaNews Database which goes back to 1995 and covers more than 14,000 newsgroups. There are 2 search options: quick search and power search. Most Web search engines offer links to DejaNews, but AltaVista offers a smaller alternative and supplement to DejaNews.
