    Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a common user interface to enable searching of all databases regardless of producer, supplier or location, such as local CD-ROM, or network. Explains client server architecture, the basic component of a common user interface and outlines current developments including the Z39.50 application layer protocol. A common user interface will result in greater synergy between information providers, technology providers, distributors and information professionals.
