    Abstract
Analyzes the communication norms of the major forms of computer-mediated communication. These forms include electronic mail, mailing lists, Usenet newsgroups, virtual environment, interactive massaging, and information services. Norms are the dominant standards for acceptable behaviour of a group of people. Each form of communication has a set of norms, which may be adjusted somewhat for a particular instance of communication for particular participants. new users of computer networks will find that the forms of the communication forums they may join are well established, but they will have the opportunity to create or participate in new forums where those norms may be somewhat different

    Abstract
The issue of how teens choose social networks and information communication technologies (ICT's) for personal communication is complex. This study focused on describing how U.S. teens from a highly technological suburban high school select ICT's for personal communication purposes. Two research questions guided the study: (a) What factors influence high school seniors' selection of online social networks and other ICT's for everyday communication? (b) How can social network theory (SNT) help to explain how teens select online social networks and other ICT's for everyday communication purposes? Using focus groups, a purposive sample of 45 teens were asked to discuss (a) their preferred methods for communicating with friends and family and why, (b) the reasons why they chose to engage (or not to engage) in online social networking, (c) how they selected ICT's for social networking and other communication purposes, and (d) how they decided whom to accept as online "friends." Findings indicated that many factors influenced participants' ICT selection practices including six major categories of selection factors: relationship factors, information/communication factors, social factors, systems factors, self-protection factors, and recipient factors. SNT was also helpful in explaining how "friendship" was a major determining factor in their communication media and platform choices.

    Abstract
Online collaborative projects have been utilized in a variety of ways over the past decade, such as bringing people together to build open source software or developing the world's largest free encyclopedia. Personal communication networks as a feature do not exist in all collaborative projects. It is currently unclear if a designer's decision to include a personal communication network in a collaborative project's structure affects outcome quality. In this study, I investigated Wikipedia's personal communication network and analyzed which Wikipedia editors are utilizing it and how they are connected to outcome quality. Evidence suggests that people who utilize these networks are more experienced in editing high quality articles and are more integrated in the community. Additionally, these individuals utilize the personal communication network for coordinating and perhaps mentoring editors who edit lower quality articles. The value of these networks is demonstrated by the characteristics of the users who use them. These findings indicate that designers of online collaborative projects can help improve the quality of outcomes in these projects by deciding to implement a personal communication network in their communities.

    Abstract
Online communication is an indispensable tool for communication and management. The network structure of communication is considered to affect team and individual performances, but it has not been not empirically tested. In this article, we collected a set of 1-month e-mail logs of a company and conducted an e-mail network analysis. We calculated the network centralities of 72 managerial candidates, and investigated the relationship between positions in the network and leadership performance with partial least squares structural equation modeling. Betweenness and in-degree network centralities of those middle managers are correlated with their leadership performance; on the other hand, for this management group, out-degree has no correlation, and PageRank is a negative indicator of leadership. Leaders with high performance are trusted in their communities as a hub of the information channel of the communication network.

    Abstract
In this article, we examine the conceptual models that help us understand the development and sustainability of scholarly and professional communication forums an the Internet, such as conferences, pre-print servers, field-wide data sets, and collaboratories. We first present and document the information processing model that is implicitly advanced in most discussions about scholarly communications-the "Standard Model." Then we present an alternative model, one that considers information technologies as Socio-Technical Interaction Networks (STINs). STIN models provide a richer understanding of human behavior with online scholarly communications forums. They also help to further a more complete understanding of the conditions and activities that support the sustainability of these forums within a field than does the Standard Model. We illustrate the significance of STIN models with examples of scholarly communication forums drawn from the fields of high-energy physics, molecular biology, and information systems. The article also includes a method for modeling electronic forums as STINs.

    Abstract
The use of codes and other methods of concealing the contents of messages is as old as recorded information. With the advent of computer communication, the need for a method of ensuring secure communication over insecure channels, such as the Internet, has seen an increased demand for good cryptography. However, the recent availability of public domain public key encryption software, such as Philip R. Zimmermann's Pretty Good privacy (PGP), has been seen by some as betraying the principles of security and has raised issues of national communication policy and personal privacy. In the USA, the government's Clipper encryption chip initiative sought to implement a key escrow system which would enable law enforcement agencies to wiretap all digital communication. Civil liberty opponents of key escrow systems argue that they will not affect criminals, and fear that they can only be made effective by banning the use of alternative encryption systems, such as PGP. Describes methods for obtaining and using PGP to encrypt and decrypt electronic mail messages

    Abstract
Studies the effects of e-journals on the scholarly communities they are serving. Considers to what extent scholars and researchers are aware of, influenced by, using, or building their own work on research published in e-journals. Draws a sample of scholarly, peer-reviewed e-journals and conducts several analyzes thorugh citation analysis. The data show that the impact of journals on scholarly communication has been minimal

    Abstract
An alternative publishing system for scholarly communication and information is emerging on international computer networks such as Internet and Bitnet. This is evident as a growing number of electronic periodicals (e-journals) provide scholarly articles, columns and reviews and have advantages over print publications, such as the speed of publication and dissemination. Electronic periodicals hold great promise, but technological problems and academic acceptance could limit their effectiveness. Some examples of electronic periodicals were investigated as well as the advantages and problems currently associated with this new source of information

    Abstract
Global computer networks have created a complex electronic communication system that has significantly changed how scholars informally exchange information and has started to change formal scholarly publication activities. Examines how scholarly electronic publishing could be conducted on the Internet, the NREN and the NII; and reviews existing proposals for change. Envisions network based electronic publishing as initially augmenting conventional publishing efforts and then gradually displacing them

    Abstract
Users need assistance in selecting tools to facilitate their use of the Internet. Outline existing catgerizations of these tools which have focused on the operation of the tools, the services they provide, or their underlying functions. Proposes an alternative user centered categorization along a number of different axes simultaneously and focusing on user requirements (communication, retrieval, browsing, searching), user skills (logging in, navigation, search expressions, categorizing information), and user interface (screen, GUI). 17 existing tools are discussed and classified using this approach. Indicates desirable future improvements in the areas of integration, richness of document types, and standards
