    Abstract
Traces the development of text searching and retrieval software designed to cope with the increasing demands made by the storage and handling of large amounts of data, recorded on high data storage media, from CD-ROM to multi gigabyte storage media and online information services, with particular reference to the need to cope with graphics as well as conventional ASCII text. Includes details of: Boolean searching, fuzzy searching and matching; relevance ranking; proximity searching and improved strategies for dealing with text searching in very large databases. Concludes that the best searching tools for CD-ROM publishers are those optimized for searching and retrieval on CD-ROM. CD-ROM drives have relatively lower random seek times than hard discs and so the software most appropriate to the medium is that which can effectively arrange the indexes and text on the CD-ROM to avoid continuous random access searching. Lists and reviews a selection of software packages designed to achieve the sort of results required for rapid CD-ROM searching

    Abstract

    Abstract
Researchers at the Florida University, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences have produced a series of full text CD-ROM databases, entitled FAIRS (Florida Agricultural Information Retrieval System), containing many of the state government publications used by agricultural extension agents whenassisting the public. FAIRS contain full text information, decision making aids, a database, colour graphics, and line drawings. Discs are issued sequentially with later discs superseding earlier ones. They were developed to resolve some of the difficulties of maintaining and controlling print publications faced by agricultural extension agents. Discusses the development of the FAIRS CD-ROM databases, cataloguing issues raised by this use of full text on a disc, and 2 proposed electronic solutions to the problem of cataloguing documents more easily on this CD-ROM product

    Abstract
This paper proposes a novel methodology to visualize a classification scheme. It is demonstrated with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computing Classification System (CCS). The collection derived from the ACM digital library, containing 37,543 documents classified by CCS. The assigned classes, subject descriptors, and keywords were processed in a dataset to produce a graphical representation of the documents. The general conception is based on the similarity of co-classes (themes) proportional to the number of common publications. The final number of all possible classes and subclasses in the collection was 353 and therefore the similarity matrix of co-classes had the same dimension. A spherical surface was chosen as the target information space. Classes and documents' node locations on the sphere were obtained by means of Multidimensional Scaling coordinates. By representing the surface on a plane like a map projection, it is possible to analyze the visualization layout. The graphical patterns were organized in some colour clusters. For evaluation of given visualization maps, graphics filtering was applied. This proposed method can be very useful in interdisciplinary research fields. It allows for a great amount of heterogeneous information to be conveyed in a compact display, including topics, relationships among topics, frequency of occurrence, importance and changes of these properties over time.

    Abstract
Provides an overview of the installation of electrically and mechanically assisted compact shelving and procedures for relocating over 2.000 linear feet of books, scores, recordings and manuscripts, prior to, during and after installation of such a system at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Ohio, USA. In the light of concern expressed by librarians that patrons would be dissatisfied with the accompanying restrictions such as reduced browsing capability, slow retrieval, and their need to obtain instruction in operating the shelving, a survey was conducted among graduate and undergraduate students to ascertain their views of electric compact shelving for books and scores in the Music Library of Sound Recordings Archives of BGSU Libraries. The survey identified: apprehension concerning the use of the installation; the adequacy of instructions for use; the level of inconvenience / delay in accessing material; overall satisfaction; and the positive and negative features of the installation

    Abstract
The popularity of CD-ROM products has caused librarians to become more active participants in the bibliographic instruction process. To meet the instructional needs of users, a variety of teaching methods has been explored at the Purdy/Kresge Library, Wayne Stare University, Detroit, Michigan, where 4 CD-Rom systems-ERIC, PsycLIT, Compact Disclosure, Social Science Index (SSI)-have also been purchased. The teaching methods include: developing instructional leaflets; offering individual instruction on demand or by appointment; scheduled group sessions; course integrated training sessions. Describes these activities and reports select results of a preliminary survey, undertaken in Spring 88, designed to evaluate user reaction to the library's CD-ROM products.
