    Abstract
Smart retrieval software can have more impact on response time than a faster CD-ROM drive. This can be shown easily now that more commerical databases are being released in several versions with practically identical content but different software. Illustrates this with 3 versions of the PAIS database, comparing the original OCSI, SPIRS software, and EBSCO software. Whereas the OCSI version took no more than a few seconds, the other 2 versions took around 10times longer, occasionally in the order of minutes. Considers how the construction of these products can account for such speed differences. However, search facilities and other features should be considered as well as speed. Offers advice for testing retrieval software

    Abstract
Discusses the merits of DVD-ROM as a medium for the storage of large quantities of text, numeric, and multimedia data. Focuses on the performance of DVD-ROM, including transfer rates, access time, and storage capacity. DVD-ROM provides a 4,7 GB storage capacity with transfer rates equivalent to a CD-ROM's 20x or 24x, or 3 MB/sec to 3,6 MB/sec, and access times of between 150 and 220 ms. DVD-ROM could become a viable alternative to CD-ROM if the MPEG-2 and Dolby AC3 decoder became options, significantly reducing the cost of the base drive for those whose information storage needs do not require them. Compares image quality, product, and price of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM. DVD-ROM would be a good solution for publishers of multi-volume CD-ROM titles

    Abstract
Reviews Encyclopedia Britannica Online ($80) from Britannica, and Encarta Concise Encyclopedia (free) from Microsoft. Britannica has more than 12.000 illustrations of high quality, excellent maps, and 60 multimedia elements including sound, video, and animation. It could be improved by enabling illustrations to be used as filtering criteria for searches, and the QuickTime multimedia format is too slow for the content. Encarta has 16.000 articles, 1.678 photographs, 408 dynamic maps, and a wealth of other features. There are no audio clips, collages, virtual tours, or panoramic views, and check boxes would be more convenient than radio buttons in the interface. Includes 2 screen displays

    Abstract
Overview of product development among Web search engines. They all went through a language acquisition phase in the past 2 years at an accelerated pace, with results that even the largest traditional services would envy. Spotlights some of the best features, including AltaVista's honouring of upper case and assumption of adjacency; InfoSeek's ability to place reviewed sites at the top of a results list, and its automatic pluralization and singularization; Northern Light's user controlled single and multiple character truncation; Excite's ability to group and ungroup results; HotBot's option to limit a search to specific major disciplines; and Lycos Pro's user controlled ranking of search results. Web searching has never been a more intuitive or user friendly process
