    1996 reichte der amerikanische Physiker Alan Sokal einen Aufsatz mit dem Titel Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity (deutsch: Die Grenzen überschreiten: Auf dem Weg zu einer transformativen Hermeneutik der Quantengravitation) bei der amerikanischen, für ihre postmoderne Ausrichtung bekannten Zeitschrift für Cultural studies Social Text zur Veröffentlichung ein. Diese druckte ihn unbeanstandet mit anderen in einer Sondernummer ab. Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung bekannte Sokal in einer anderen Zeitschrift, Lingua Franca, dass es sich bei dem Aufsatz um eine Parodie handle. Er habe die zusammengesuchten Zitate verschiedener postmoderner Denker mit dem typischen Jargon dieser Denkrichtung zu einem Text montiert, dessen unsinniger Inhalt bei Beachtung wissenschaftlicher Standards, so der Vorwurf an die Herausgeber von Social Text, als solcher hätte erkannt werden müssen. Dieser Vorfall löste im akademischen Milieu und der Presse (der Fall kam immerhin bis auf die Titelseite der New York Times) eine öffentliche Diskussion aus, wie dieser Vorfall im Besonderen und die Seriosität der postmodernen Philosophie im Allgemeinen zu bewerten sei. Sokal und Vertreter des kritisierten Personenkreises führten die Diskussion in weiteren Zeitschriftenartikeln fort und verteidigten ihre Standpunkte. 1997 veröffentlichte Sokal zusammen mit seinem belgischen Kollegen Jean Bricmont dazu ein Buch mit dem Titel Impostures Intellectuelles (übersetzt: Intellektuelle Hochstapeleien, deutscher Titel: Eleganter Unsinn), in dem er seine Thesen erklärt und an Beispielen von Texten bedeutender postmoderner französischer Philosophen erläutert (namentlich Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze/Félix Guattari, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, Jacques Lacan, Bruno Latour und Paul Virilio und - obwohl kein Postmoderner, als historisches Beispiel - Henri Bergson). In diesem Buch gaben Sokal/Bricmont - neben der Verteidigung gegen den vermuteten Missbrauch der Wissenschaft - auch ein politisches Motiv für ihren Vorstoß an.     Abstract
    Der Senat der DFG hat im Juli das Positionspapier »Die digitale Transformation weiter gestalten - Der Beitrag der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft zu einer innovativen Informationsinfrastruktur für die Forschung« verabschiedet. Das Positionspapier setzt sich mit den gegenwärtigen Herausforderungen wissenschaftlicher Informationsinfrastrukturen auseinander, greift neue Entwicklungen auf und benennt die Felder, die mit gezielten Förderinitiativen (weiter)entwickelt werden sollten. Es bildet für die kommenden Jahre die strategische und thematische Richtschnur, an der die Fördermaßnahmen der DFG ausgerichtet werden. Der Beitrag stellt das Positionspapier in seinen Grundzügen vor und skizziert die Überlegungen zur Umsetzung der geplanten Fördermaßnahmen in den kommenden Jahren.

    Die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Holztechnologie - ViFaHolz - wird innerhalb eines von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Projektes aufgebaut gemeinsam von dem Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden (ihd) und der Technischen Informationsbibliothek Hannover (TIB).     "Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) richtet ein zweites "Leistungszentrum für Forschungsinformation" in Oldenburg ein. Das Zentrum am Informatikinstitut OFFIS beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie elektronische Lernmaterialien, Musikdateien, Grafiken und andere nicht auf Text basierende elektronisch vorliegende Dokumente in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken angemessen verarbeitet werden können. Damit sie verfügbar bleiben und nicht "für alle Zeit" verloren gehen, erarbeitete das Oldenburger Informatikinstitut OFFIS zusammen mit den Universitäten Braunschweig und Bonn, der Technischen Informationsbibliothek Hannover und der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek ein Konzept zum Aufbau eines Leistungszentrums für Forschungsinformationen. Der Entwurf wurde im Jahr 2004 der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) vorgestellt. Das mit "Probado" betitelte Konzept überzeugte die DFG, sodass sie dem Konsortium unter der Federführung von OFFIS jetzt den Zuschlag erteilte. Im Leistungszentrum werden innerhalb der nächsten fünf Jahre Werkzeuge und Systeme sowie Verfahren und Abläufe entwickelt, die es wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken erlauben, mit nicht-textuellen Dokumenten genau so selbstverständlich umzugehen wie heute mit Büchern oder Zeitschriften. In der ersten Phase werden Musik, 3D-Computergrafiken und multimediale Lernmaterialien berücksichtigt. Später sollen weitere Dokumententypen hinzukommen, beispielsweise Bilder oder Filme."

    Abstract
    OSIRIS und ELIB sind von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) und dem Niedersächsischen Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur (MWK) geförderte Projekte an der Universität Osnabrück. Sie beschäftigen sich mit intuitiv-natürlichsprachlichen Retrievalsystemen und mit Fragen der Indexierung großer Volltexdatenbanken in dieser Technik. Die Entwicklungen haben dazu geführt, daß an sich aufwendige und komplexe Verfahren der syntaktisch-semantischen Analyse und Bewertung von textuellen Phrasen in relationale Datenbanken für Massendaten eingebettet werden konnten und nun im Produktionsbetrieb eingesetzt werden können
