    Abstract
    Große Unternehmen sind in Zeiten der Globalisierung immer stärker darauf angewiesen, ihre Forschung und Entwicklung den internationalen Anforderungen anzupassen und globale Standortvorteile zu nutzen. Diese Untersuchung analysiert am Beispiel des Standortes Deutschland, wie Multinationale Konzerne aus vier Industriesektoren (Chemie, E-Technik, Maschinenbau, Fahrzeugbau) ihre Forschung und Entwicklung international aufstellen. Untersucht werden 88 Unternehmen mit Hauptsitz in Deutschland und 47 ausländische Unternehmen mit Forschungsaktivitäten in Deutschland. Die Studie verbindet indikatorbasierte Analysen zur Darstellung von Patent- und Publikationsprofilen mit einer schriftlichen Befragung sowie Analysen von Geschäftsberichten. Mit diesem breiten methodischen Instrumentarium können das Ausmaß, die inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte, die Triebkräfte und das Management internationaler Forschungsaktivitäten abgebildet werden. Damit trägt die Untersuchung zu einem differenzierteren Verständnis der Forschungsaktivitäten Multinationaler Konzerne bei und leistet gleichzeitig einen Beitrag zur aktuellen Einordnung der Stärken und Schwächen des Forschungsstandortes Deutschlands.
