- Abstract
- Das Klassifizieren von Objekten (z. B. Fauna, Flora, Texte) ist ein Verfahren, das auf menschlicher Intelligenz basiert. In der Informatik - insbesondere im Gebiet der Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI) - wird u. a. untersucht, inweit Verfahren, die menschliche Intelligenz benötigen, automatisiert werden können. Hierbei hat sich herausgestellt, dass die Lösung von Alltagsproblemen eine größere Herausforderung darstellt, als die Lösung von Spezialproblemen, wie z. B. das Erstellen eines Schachcomputers. So ist "Rybka" der seit Juni 2007 amtierende Computerschach-Weltmeistern. Inwieweit Alltagsprobleme mit Methoden der Künstlichen Intelligenz gelöst werden können, ist eine - für den allgemeinen Fall - noch offene Frage. Beim Lösen von Alltagsproblemen spielt die Verarbeitung der natürlichen Sprache, wie z. B. das Verstehen, eine wesentliche Rolle. Den "gesunden Menschenverstand" als Maschine (in der Cyc-Wissensbasis in Form von Fakten und Regeln) zu realisieren, ist Lenat's Ziel seit 1984. Bezüglich des KI-Paradeprojektes "Cyc" gibt es CycOptimisten und Cyc-Pessimisten. Das Verstehen der natürlichen Sprache (z. B. Werktitel, Zusammenfassung, Vorwort, Inhalt) ist auch beim intellektuellen Klassifizieren von bibliografischen Titeldatensätzen oder Netzpublikationen notwendig, um diese Textobjekte korrekt klassifizieren zu können. Seit dem Jahr 2007 werden von der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek nahezu alle Veröffentlichungen mit der Dewey Dezimalklassifikation (DDC) intellektuell klassifiziert.
Die Menge der zu klassifizierenden Veröffentlichungen steigt spätestens seit der Existenz des World Wide Web schneller an, als sie intellektuell sachlich erschlossen werden kann. Daher werden Verfahren gesucht, um die Klassifizierung von Textobjekten zu automatisieren oder die intellektuelle Klassifizierung zumindest zu unterstützen. Seit 1968 gibt es Verfahren zur automatischen Dokumentenklassifizierung (Information Retrieval, kurz: IR) und seit 1992 zur automatischen Textklassifizierung (ATC: Automated Text Categorization). Seit immer mehr digitale Objekte im World Wide Web zur Verfügung stehen, haben Arbeiten zur automatischen Textklassifizierung seit ca. 1998 verstärkt zugenommen. Dazu gehören seit 1996 auch Arbeiten zur automatischen DDC-Klassifizierung bzw. RVK-Klassifizierung von bibliografischen Titeldatensätzen und Volltextdokumenten. Bei den Entwicklungen handelt es sich unseres Wissens bislang um experimentelle und keine im ständigen Betrieb befindlichen Systeme. Auch das VZG-Projekt Colibri/DDC ist seit 2006 u. a. mit der automatischen DDC-Klassifizierung befasst. Die diesbezüglichen Untersuchungen und Entwicklungen dienen zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage: "Ist es möglich, eine inhaltlich stimmige DDC-Titelklassifikation aller GVK-PLUS-Titeldatensätze automatisch zu erzielen?"

- Abstract
- Aufgrund der fortgesetzten Publikationsflut stellt sich immer dringender die Frage, wie die Schwellen für die Titel- und Normdatenpflege gesenkt werden können - sowohl für die intellektuelle als auch die automatisierte Sacherschließung. Zu einer Verbesserung der Daten- und Arbeitsqualität in der Sacherschließung kann beigetragen werden a) durch eine flexible Visualisierung der Gemeinsamen Normdatei (GND) und anderer Wissensorganisationssysteme, so dass deren Graphstruktur intuitiv erfassbar wird, und b) durch eine investigative Analyse ihrer aktuellen Struktur und die Entwicklung angepasster automatisierter Methoden zur Ermittlung und Korrektur fehlerhafter Muster. Die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB) prüft im Rahmen des GND-Entwicklungsprogramms 2017-2021, welche Bedingungen für eine fruchtbare community-getriebene Open-Source-Entwicklung entsprechender Werkzeuge gegeben sein müssen. Weiteres Potential steckt in einem langfristigen Übergang zu einer Darstellung von Titel- und Normdaten in Beschreibungssprachen im Sinne des Semantic Web (RDF; OWL, SKOS). So profitiert die GND von der Interoperabilität mit anderen kontrollierten Vokabularen und von einer erleichterten Interaktion mit anderen Fach-Communities und kann umgekehrt auch außerhalb des Bibliothekswesens zu einem noch attraktiveren Wissensorganisationssystem werden. Darüber hinaus bieten die Ansätze aus dem Semantic Web die Möglichkeit, stärker formalisierte, strukturierende Satellitenvokabulare rund um die GND zu entwickeln. Daraus ergeben sich nicht zuletzt auch neue Perspektiven für die automatisierte Sacherschließung. Es wäre lohnend, näher auszuloten, wie und inwieweit semantisch-logische Verfahren den bestehenden Methodenmix bereichern können.

- Abstract
- The University of Toronto Libraries is currently reviewing technology to support its Collections U of T service. Collections U of T provides search and browse access to 375 digital collections (and over 203,000 digital objects) at the University of Toronto Libraries. Digital objects typically include special collections material from the university as well as faculty digital collections, all with unique metadata requirements. The service is currently supported by IIIF-enabled Islandora, with one Fedora back end and multiple Drupal sites per parent collection (see attached image). Like many institutions making use of Islandora, UTL is now confronted with Drupal 7 end of life and has begun to investigate a migration path forward. This article will summarise the Collections U of T functional requirements and lessons learned from our current technology stack. It will go on to outline our research to date for alternate solutions. The article will review both emerging micro-service solutions, as well as out-of-the-box platforms, to provide an overview of the digital collection technology landscape in 2019. Note that our research is focused on reviewing technology solutions for providing access to digital collections, as preservation services are offered through other services at the University of Toronto Libraries.
